Chapter 16

“Noah and I have been getting… feelings. Weird things are happening. When we’re close. And not close,” I said it all with a few seconds of silence in between, like I couldn’t speak normally. Ugh, so stupid. Mason stared at both of us, his eyes going back and forth between us.

“Would you like to explain further?” he asked, eyebrows raised.

“Well,” Noah said, his voice steady and louder now. “We’ve kissed three times and there are thing, feelings, passing between us whenever we’re close.” He breathed out and added, “Or something.”

“Oh,” Mason said. His eyes widened. “Oh!”

“Yeah,” I agreed. “Oh.”

“You two? I would never guess…” he said, speaking more to himself. “This can explain the fact that you always wanted each others attention when little… that connection. But it turned to hate instead which now turns to love… Mhm… You came back and the connection came back… It makes sense.”

“Mason!” Noah said suddenly, making Mason and I jump. “We’re standing right here, you idiot.”

Mason stared at us, the excitement gone. “I…I think you’re mates.”

“Think?” Noah repeated, glaring. He was getting impatient and angry. I nudged him – once again trying to ignore the feeling – to calm him down.

“Well, no,” Mason said. “I’m sure. If what you guys are saying is true and strong, you’re mates. These feelings and sparks don’t just appear when you’re not mates, no feeling is that strong unless you are bound together.”

“Yes, right,” I said. “These… sparks. We get them everytime we… touch. They seem to get stronger every day, is that normal?”

“Normal?” Mason chuckled. “Sam, that’s the proof of your mating. I can’t believe you two have actually kissed. Three times, at that!”

“Okay, enough,” Noah said. “You can leave now.”

“Are you sure? Don’t do anything stupid. This mate thing is not to play with, got it?”

“Got it,” I answered for both of us because Noah was practically fuming for no reason.

“And Noah,” Mason said, suddenly looking dangerous as he took one step closer. “If you ever touch Sam in a bad way or break her heart, I’m going to break your bones, you hear me?” He grinned. “So no pressure.”

“And if you tell anyone about this,” Noah begun.

“We’ll kill you,” I finished seriously. “And thanks for this.” Mason just chuckled, promised he wouldn’t and left.

Noah and I watched him go all the way inside in silence and then turned to look at each other. We were mates. We were mates. Noah Black and I, Samantha Riley, childhood enemies, were mates. Unbelievable yet so amazing. I had finally found my mate. And it was a plus that my mate looked like he did. But now I started to wonder what Noah thought about all of this because no matter how confident and un-caring about other people’s opinions and thoughts of me, I was, Noah and I were together in this now and every thought of his counted as much as I mine did.

“What are you thinking about?” I asked, so quietly that I barely heard myself. Noah was looking aside, clearly stuck in thoughts. He slightly shook his head, shrugging.

“A lot of things,” he answered. He looked at me then and quickly added, “Not bad things.”

“Are you sure?” I asked. I had to get it out of my head and just ask him truthfully before moving on with this information we had just gotten. “Because I understand if you don’t want me to be your mate. We can’t change it but if you don’t want, you know, anything to do with me that way, I get it, really, I-“

“Sam,” Noah said, stopping me. Where on earth had I gone? I felt like a frightened little monkey here, which wasn’t the usual me. I was afraid of rejection, I knew that already, because my last boyfriend had cheated on me and back then, I was very self conscious and it hit me hard. Now I had grown to a confident young woman but I was still scared of getting rejected. I could hide my feelings well, but inside, I’d probably just slowly fade away, if he decided to leave me in this.

“Sam, “Noah repeated. “I don’t have a problem with you being my mate. Honestly. In fact, I’m glad you are because you’re… well, you’re Sam. All those years together, we know each other inside and out. We’re two opposites but still the same. Have you ever thought about that?”

“I have,” I admitted. We were so alike but at the same time not. We knew each other’s strengths and weaknesses and we knew how we worked. “And I’m also surprised to see this side of you,” I said, chuckling to lighten to mood a little. It was getting too serious for me. Remember when I said I couldn’t handle those serious, heart-talking moments? Yeah, well, here we are.

“Well, I’m not always going to be an asshole. Besides,” he shrugged with a smile, “we’re mates now. No way am I treating you like shit.”

I laughed, shaking my head. “This is so weird.”

“This is fucking weirder than weird,” he breathed out, laughing. “Let’s just go home and take in all of this. We’ll talk about it more after we get a good night sleep.”

“Yeah, that’s a good idea.”

We walked side by side all the way back to our homes and when we were on the front yard, I stopped, smiling at him. He waited.

“Thanks,” I said. “For taking this so good… and calmly.”

He gave me only a smile and walked up to his porch. “Go inside so I know you’re in.”

I chuckled and nodded, hurrying up the porch steps and opened the front door. One last smile and I went inside. I hurried to my room, feeling heavy with all these thoughts and feelings and this new information that I had somehow known about at the same time as I hadn’t.

I changed into my pajamas quickly and went under the covers, in need of that good nights sleep. Tomorrow was a new day and we would both think better and more rational then.

Waking up with a start, I sighed when I realized it was just a bad dream. All I could remember was that it was dark, really dark, with fog around and only the moon shining. I was alone and there was a man with black clothes and a shadowed face so I couldn’t see. He held an axe and two white eyes were staring at me under his hat, all while I was running. He never disappeared or got further away, it freaked me out.

I got up and took a shower, standing there for at least twenty minutes. Last night had been much, alright. Noah and I knew and had kind of accepted the fact the fact that we were mates. Or did we? Mason had confirmed it and in a way, so had Arianna. Now they were the two people who knew and I didn’t plan on letting anyone else know for quite some time now. I hadn’t told Arianna about last nights meeting with Mason but I was going to tell her today.

I also couldn’t be thankful enough that Noah hadn’t thrown a fit or rejected me like trash. He’d actually smiled and said that he wasn’t going to treat me like shit because we were mates. That means he’s accepted it, right? He even said that he didn’t mind having me as his and truthfully, I didn’t either.

I just didn’t know what was going to happen now. I didn’t want the girl I was before to come out again; the shy, self conscious girl who was scared of taking risks. I liked risks, I liked trouble and action but I was kind and caring. I didn’t care what anyone thought about me unless that anyone was my family. Everyone knew I was like that now. As a tomboy, I had been that way, too. But in New York, the first two years had been hard. I was the lonely shy tomboy there until I made friends and who I learned everything from.

I got dressed in a pair of dark/gray-ish jean shorts and a simple plain shirt, but my hair up in one of my nice comfy buns and went downstairs. Everyone was in the kitchen, eating breakfast and I joined.

“Morning,” I said, trying to ignore and not to ignore Tyler’s eyes at the same time.

“Morning,” they replied, smiling.

“Any special plans today, Samantha?” Liz asked. I chewed on my sandwich, shaking my head.

“No, I don’t think so. Just hang out outside again, as usual.” I chuckled. “Not much to do here but I like it anyways.”

“I agree,” Liz nodded. “Very little to do here. But we’ll manage these three more days and then we’re going home.”

“Oh you’re leaving already?” I asked, trying not to look too pleased. I felt bad for wanting them, mostly Tyler, out but it was weird and he was giving me even more intense looks after that night on our date. I didn’t know what to do, what he wanted me to do, and so I just tried ignoring him.

“Thank you,” I said when I finished breakfast. I got up, put my plate and glass in the dishwasher and left. I went upstairs and brushed my  teeth again; I didn’t like leaving the house without brushing my teeth, I didn’t feel so fresh, but that was because I had to be very perfect about those things. Don’t know why, I just had been for a long time now.

I went down again, heading towards the front door when Tyler showed up in front of it, out of nowhere, blocking it. I stopped as my heart nearly jumped out of my chest of fright.

“Tyler!” I breathed. “You scared me!”

“Sorry,” he said, still staring at me with those intense eyes. What the hell was going on? He was starting to freak me out and annoy the heck out of me. “Where are you going?”

“To Arianna,” I said slowly, wondering what on earth he could be wanting right now. “Why don’t you hang out with Max a little? He’s nice, get to know him and you’ve already met him a few times. It’s a waste to sit home on a day like this.”

“I don’t want to hang out with Max,” he mumbled. “Is everything alright between you and Noah? I’ve noticed that you don’t fight now.”

“No, we don’t. I talked to him and we fixed the problem. We’re not on great terms but we’re on our way,” I said, lying just a little. I didn’t want anyone to know anything about Noah and I, even that we weren’t fighting. Maybe that would be kind of hard to notice since we were always at each others throats but still.

“Okay,” Tyler said, nodding. “Have fun then.”

“Thanks. You too!” I said and hurried out of the house. Talk about awkward.

I walked over to Arianna’s house in seven steps and opened the door, rushing inside. Willa and Joseph didn’t seem to be home and neither did Aunt Bianca; it was all quiet. But I knew Arianna was home because she’d texted me and told me to come over this morning. I went upstairs and into her room, smiling as I found her on the floor with her earphones in and magazines splattered all around her. She saw me, grinned and pulled out the earphones.

“Hey!” she said, patting the floor. “Sit down and join me in my heaven.”

I laughed. “Heaven, huh? Well you might want to leave heaven because I have news.”

“You and Noah are mates,” she guessed immediately. I sighed; of course she’d know, she pretty much already did when we discussed this the first time. I nodded.

“Yep. We talked to Mason last night and told him about everything. He asked us a few questions and confirmed that we were mates.”

“How did Noah take it?” Arianna asked seriously. “Did he get mad?”

“Actually no.” I smiled a little. “He said he didn’t mind at all. It was nice actually, I’ve never seen that nice side of him. I thought he was incapable of treating any girl like a normal person but he can.”

“I’m glad because otherwise I’d kill him,” she said, gritting her teeth. “You’re not going to have a mate who’s an asshole and a douche bag like he is. Or used to be. Or whatever.”

I chuckled. “Well, let’s just keep it between us. You, Mason and Noah and I are the only ones to know this and no one else will find out, okay?”

“My lips are sealed!” She pretended to zip her lips with a smile. “So what else is up?”

“Right,” I said, remembering. “Tyler Warren has become one stare-y friend lately. He keeps giving me these weird looks and all. He came out of nowhere today, asking me about Noah and if we were alright and all that. Then he said “have fun” and let me go. He’s been acting weird ever since our date.”

“Maybe he’s just upset because you dissed him,” Arianna suggested.

“Ari! You know I always feel guilty about everything, you’re not helping.”

“Sorry,” she chuckled. “But you know it’s true. Maybe he’s upset or maybe he’s just weird.”

“Maybe both,” I muttered.

An hour later, when Arianna was done freshing up, we went outside to our usual places and sat down on the plastic chairs by the big plastic table in front of her house. All houses had a table with six chairs outside on the front and some had on the back of the house as well.

“I love when there is a light breeze,” Arianna said as she shut her eyes. “Perfect when it’s so hot.”

I agreed silently, shutting my eyes, too. The sun warmed my face while the breeze softly touched my bare skin. I thought about Jennifer. She hadn’t been much with us, whether we offered or not. She didn’t talk much either. She seemed to not let anyone in and wasn’t so open when we talked to her. I mean, she was really nice once you had a conversation with her and all but at the same time, she looked like she was holding back for some reason.

Secret Guy’s POV

Samantha Riley.

Such a beautiful young woman, perfect for me and my life. We were the perfect match, she just didn’t know it yet. But whether she knew or not, she was mine.

I was going to have her, no matter what anyone said or did. She’d get used to me after a while. I only try once and if it doesn’t work, I take what I want and do not try again. I don’t believe in second chances. The first time counts and if it doesn’t turn out good, I fix it anyways.

And I was having her, very soon. We’d become powerful together and everyone would respect us. So beautiful.

My door suddenly opened and I turned around from my window.

“Dear, why are you here all alone?” my mother asked. I turned back to the window.

“Because I want to,” I answered. I heard my mother sigh.

“Don’t worry. She will be ours.”

And with that, she left. I nodded.

She will be ours.
