Chapter Fifty Four
Sinful Attractions
Stephen
Trinity and I walked into the building to meet Lachie. As we moved towards him, I felt her hand tighten around mine.
âDonât worry, baby,â I reassured her. âWe can trust Lachie.â
âI know, Stephen,â she replied, her voice shaky. âIâm just... really scared.â
âI get it,â I said, giving her hand a comforting squeeze. âItâs hard to believe something you donât understand.â
âThank you for understanding,â she said, her voice soft.
âOf course, doll,â I replied, pulling her closer. âIâve got you. I always have.â
We reached Lachie, who was already moving towards us.
âStephen, good to see you again. And hi, Trinity,â he greeted us.
âHi, nice to meet you,â Trinity replied, her voice steadier now.
âIâm Lachie, the FBI agent assigned to your case,â he introduced himself.
âThank you for your help,â Trinity said, her voice sincere.
âMy pleasure,â Lachie replied. âI just wish we couldâve stopped this before it happened to you.â
I was impressed with how Lachie was handling the situation. He didnât once hint that he and Trinity had met before, letting her lead the conversation at her own pace. I appreciated his tact.
âWhy donât we sit in one of the offices?â Lachie suggested. âI can get you both some coffee and we can go over what you need to know. Maybe I can answer some of your questions, Trinity.â
âThat sounds good, thank you,â Trinity replied. âBut Iâd prefer tea.â
Lachie looked at me, surprised. He was used to our usual coffee orders.
âBlack tea with one sugar,â I clarified. âMy wife is pregnant.â
âOh, congratulations to you both,â Lachie said, his surprise replaced with a warm smile.
âThank you,â we both replied.
Lachie led us to one of the offices and opened the door for us. As he left to get our drinks, I turned to Trinity, my arm draped over the back of her chair.
âAre you okay?â I asked.
âYou were right about him,â she replied.
âHow so, darling?â
âHeâs very sincere. Easy to talk to.â
âHeâs one of the good guys, momma,â I assured her. âBenji and Lachie are close, and I trust Benji implicitly.â
Lachie returned shortly after, taking a seat across from us.
âTrinity, what weâre about to discuss might be a lot to take in,â he began. âI wonât bring up anything that might trigger bad memories for you. Is that okay?â
âYes, I guess,â Trinity replied. âBut wonât they do that anyway when I have to testify? Thatâs what Stephen explained to me.â
âThey will, Trinity,â Lachie confirmed. âBut you donât remember what happened, do you?â
âNo, I only know what Stephen has told me,â she admitted.
âSo, this is a good thing,â Lachie said.
Her eyes widened. âIt is?â
âYes, because when youâre asked about it, will you be able to answer?â
âWell, I donât know how I would answer,â she admitted.
âYou wouldnât be able to, would you? And thatâs an advantage for us,â Lachie explained.
âHow so?â Trinity asked, her brow furrowed in confusion.
âTrinity, my goal is to have these charges dropped at the Grand Jury so you donât have to face trial,â Lachie revealed.
âSeriously?â I asked, surprised.
âYes. I believe that given your amnesia, we have legal grounds to argue your competency to stand trial,â Lachie explained.
âHow so?â Trinity asked, her voice filled with curiosity.
âHow can you or a defense lawyer effectively argue your innocence on a crime you canât remember and defend yourself against?â Lachie asked.
I was stunned. I knew Lachie had a plan, but I never imagined he could get the charges dropped for Trinity.
âAs you know, given Benjiâs involvement in the cross trial of the CPD, he can no longer represent you due to a conflict of interest,â Lachie continued. âHowever, Benji and I have been in touch with another close friend of ours who we believe can represent you effectively. I hope youâll trust our decision to assign him as your legal counsel.â
âWe trust any recommendation you and Benji make, Lachie,â I assured him.
âThank you for your trust,â Lachie replied. âI assure you, weâre committed to ensuring you all walk away from this unscathed.â
âThank you, Lachie,â Trinity and I said in unison.
âRight, Iâll arrange for Arlo to meet with you both tomorrow,â Lachie said.
âOur home will be fine if heâs comfortable with that,â I offered.
âExcellent. In the meantime, Iâll assist him in obtaining a subpoena for your wifeâs medical records and her specialist to testify. I just need you both to sign here and consent for Arlo to obtain these,â Lachie said, handing us the paperwork.
We both quickly signed the documents.
âTrinity, do you have any questions for me?â Lachie asked.
âNone that I can think of right now, thank you,â Trinity replied. âBut Iâll write them down if I think of any and let you and Arlo know.â
âPlease do,â Lachie encouraged.
âBefore we go, may I use the bathroom?â Trinity asked.
âOf course, follow me,â Lachie said, leading Trinity to the bathroom.
Once they were gone, Lachie turned to me. âYou okay with all this?â
âYes, of course. Thank you, Lachie,â I replied. âThereâs one thing you should know, though.â
âWhatâs that, Stephen?â
âTrinity is slowly starting to get some of her memories back.â
âRight! Iâll expedite all of this as a priority,â Lachie said. âIâll talk to Arlo about pushing for an earlier hearing date. We can argue for this on medical grounds. Weâll figure it out.â
