Aashrit was looking at his wife getting ready for college. After taking leave for so many days, she finally started college and there's a weird thing he noticed about her.
He thinned his brows seeing her tying her hair in a messy bun making him stoppl wearing his tie.
"Why do you go like this to college?" He said standing behind her and looking at her in the mirror.
She looked at him and their eyes locked in the mirror. She noticed the confused expression on his face "Huh??" She said not understanding him.
"Why don't you do makeup or wear the best clothes to your classes?" He said to her and noticed her expression going down.
Meera felt weird hearing him. She felt hideous. Her throat constricted and she suddenly didn't know what to say.
Aashrit looked at her face and understood that she must have taken his words wrong. He quickly held her hand and made her sit on the chair.
"No.......... Bachha you are taking me wrong." He said in a hurry to stop her from going into overthinking mode and continued "Look at me."
Meera took a deep breath and looked at him "No.. that's fine" she said suppressing her emotions.
"No......It's not. It's not fine. Don't say it's fine if you are not feeling fine OK?" He said but got no response except for a nod.
He took a breath and continued "What I meant to say is that you love to dress up. I mean I saw you getting ready so nicely when you are going out with me or your family. Even when you are at home, you always try to wear the best clothes. Everyone now knows your love for the beautiful clothes and always tidying up your looks ." He continued which made Meera's eyes go wide. She was shocked knowing that he was noticing such small things about her that she might not have noticed. But whatever he said was true.
Aashrit rubbed her hand with his thumb " I am asking you that why it's not the same when you go to your college."
And this sentence of his suddenly made Meera remember some memories she had hidden deep inside.
She remembered those counted moments when she dressed up and went out all alone only to get harassed by some strangers or catcalled or even worse made fun of by people because they didn't understand her fashion. She had no one to protect her and suddenly she made that in her mind that it's better to be hideous which means no one will give her attention, no attention means no catcalling, no harassing, and no touching without her permission.
She looked at Aashrit who was looking at her intently only to hear the reason. She bit her lower lip to control her tongue before it uttered some words that were supposed to stay hidden but his next words broke the wall.
"I am here for you and will always be. Try to trust me and I'll never break that." He said and the wall she built for years to protect herself broke.
She was ready once again to trust someone. The words she always wanted to hear have finally reached her ear. Someone had asked her to trust him after her grandfather and she felt to maybe maybe make a little window in her wall to give her some access, just a little bit.
"I am scared." She uttered out and saw him thinning his brows. "If I am hideous, people will not pay attention to me. If I don't get the attention, I won't be hurt. No one will catcall, No one will touch me without my permission, no one will look at me with dirty intentions, and No one will try to come close to me only to break me later on. " She said with some fear in her heart considering his reaction.
Aashrit was silently listening to her.
"When I am with someone who I know will protect me, I feel confident in myself and not scared." She said looking down.
Aashrit took a deep breath, his jaw clenching with anger but he controlled it. He put his hand on her cheek and made her look up at him.
"But in college, you have Shivansh and Adwait. Don't they protect you?" He said in a very calm, sweet voice. "Don't they protect you?" He said in such a comforting voice that anyone can open up.
"they do. But........." And she went silent looking unsure.
"But what bacha......"
"You promise me that you won't scold them or punish them."
He knew that saying anything against her words meant her closing her emotions again and he decided to go with the flow
"Ok, " he said.
"They fight. And I am scared. If someone says something, they fight them in front of everyone. I don't like fights. It scares me. I am scared that what if those people came again when no one is around me or worse what If those people hurt them." She said with her shivering hand.
Aashrit took a deep breath, his heart raging with the anger he was feeling but he was controlling it in front of her. He didn't want to scare her. But her next words warmed his heart.
"But it's not the same with you. I feel protected with you. People don't stare when I am with you let alone saying something. And you don't act on impulse. You don't go fighting people. You protect me instead of hurting others." She said looking at him.
"Only if she knew what I would do with someone who try to cross her boundaries." He thought.
Aashrit stood up without saying anything and gave her his hand. Meera looked up at him from his hand. He shook her and for her to take it.
She held his hand and he made her stand up. He walked towards the first floor with her while she followed without any words.
She stood between her lots of clothes confused. Aashrit left her hand and went through her wardrobe. Moving through the racks of her clothes, he saw lots of untouched, unseen clothes. Going through every type of clothes he decided to choose one which might she be comfortable in starting. He chose straight jeans and a decent T-shirt for her.
"Here," He said giving her the outfit for today while she looked at him confused and with stinky eyes.
She took it in her hands and looked at it with pursed lips. She looked up at him and gave him a small smile.
"Can we change the jeans?" She said.
He looked at her and shook his head in no.
She heaved a breath "It's tight on thighs. I mean I can wear something loose."
"Will you go and change or do you want me to do it myself." These words slipped his mouth and he pursed his lips thinking about the last words he said.
Meera ignored his words to avoid any awkward situation and went to the changing side.
While she was inside he shouted "Tuck in the T-shirt "
While Aashrit looked around to see any other outfit if in any case, it didn't look good which he highly doubted.
His attention broke when he heard his name. He turned around and saw his wife was already in the outfit he gave her.
He looked at her up and down and came near her. His hand held her tucked-in t-shirt and pulled it up a little bit giving it a loose yet funky look.
"That's better."He said and looked at her with a serious expression.
He again holds her hand and brings her in front of the mirror.
"Make a ponytail." He ordered standing beside her with his hand crossed in front of his chest.
She didn't argue and just did as he said.
He turned her chair in his direction and bent in front of her. "Look you are beautiful but I am just asking on seeing the people you live around and just so you don't feel left out."
Meera nodded
"Do you want to do makeup?" He said stroking her shoulder lightly
"Wouldn't it be too much?" She questioned.
"No, if my wife loves it then no it's not over. Anything you love can never be over. "
And Meera nodded at him "Just a lip tint and nothing else."
He moved back "Then go on. Do whatever you want, your husband is there to protect you." He said patting her back.
A smile threatened to spread on her lips making Aashrit proud of his ownself.
He moved near her and put his hands on her cheeks "You are beautiful bulbul and I want you to believe it." And kissed her forehead.
