Chapter 1729
Married by Mistake: Mr. Whitman’s Sinner Wife
Madelineâs calmness impressed Carter yet again.
Perhaps it was this calmness of her that had made him feel that she was special back then.
Carter placed the cup in his hands steadily. âI donât have anything to ask you.â
He checked the time on his watch. âYour husband should be here soon.â
Just as Carter had spoken, Madeline could hear the familiar car engine sound coming from the outside of the villa entrance.
That was Jeremyâs car.
Carter glimpsed at the French window through the corner of his eyes. âThat was certainly fast. Youâre someone he cares about indeed.â
âYouâre so good at cracking jokes, Mr. Gray. Iâm his wife, could he not care about me?â Madeline asked and chuckled lightly. âSome people are quite pitiful, however. They obviously care about someone, yet they donât know how to care for them. Donât you think so?â
ââ¦â
Carterâs smile froze.
He could tell what Madeline was sneering at him, he did not know what Madeline had meant exactly.
Thud thud thud thud.
The familiar sound of footsteps came closer, and Madeline immediately rose from the sofa.
âLinnie!â
âJeremy, Iâm here.â
Madeline looked toward the man who was walking over. The sight of Jeremyâs hurried and frantic look made her sincerely feel sorry for him.
If it were not for her wanting to be alone with Shirley and asking Jeremy to leave, this would not have happened.
At least now that they had reunited, Jeremy would protect her, even if Carter had shown up.
âMr. Whitman, youâve arrived very quickly.â Carter was the first to speak.
Jeremyâs cold gaze swept past Carterâs face, then walked straight to Madeline and grabbed her hand.
âLetâs go.â
âDonât you want to sit down for a chat, Mr. Whitman?â Carter asked as he took a new teacup and poured another cup of black tea.
âItâs snowing so heavily out there. Why donât you sit down, enjoy some tea and chat for a bit?
Jeremy looked at the leisure and carefree Carter, then lowered his eyes, meeting Madelineâs eyes, and sat on the sofa facing Carter while holding Madelineâs hands.
âYou want to chat, huh? Alright, Iâll chat with you. Whatâs the purpose of you doing all these? What on earth are you trying to do by asking Shirley to develop this kind of poison to manipulate others?â
Carter silently listened to Jeremyâs questions, then calmly said, âSpecifically, I intend to manipulate you, but you shouldâve already known that a long time ago.â
He briefly paused as he spoke, and the smile his gaze deepened as he peered into Jeremyâs sharp and charming eyes.
âFor you, Mr. Whitman, the physical pain and mental torture had been but a brief suffering, at most.
However, it wonât be the same for your wife. Sheâs your weak spot.â
Carter certainly saw through this.
However, the anger in Jeremyâs heart was surging.
He felt as though he and Madeline were just like experiment subjects for Carter to examine in detail.
Regardless of what Carter knew, he certainly could not know everything about them.
âCarter, youâve got one thing right. My wife is indeed my weak spot, but sheâs also my armor. Iâd advise you to stop provoking us. Otherwise, youâll find it far more difficult to achieve your goals, and Iâll do everything in my power to stop you.â
âHeh.â Carter chuckled softly. âMr. Whitman, I donât think you can threaten me anymore,â he said, standing up. âIf the poison remains in the body of the love of your life, you will always have to worry.
You might have also forgotten about one thing, so let me remind you.â
Carter deliberately paused as he spoke, the corner of his lips curled upward as he looked at Jeremyâs light flax-colored hair and amber eyes.
