Chapter 705
Bogus Billionaire
Now, Gwen was shaking even more violently. She huddled in Seanâs embrace and said, âHow is this fair? How could Carol become embroiled in this when it was so difficult for her to escape the Morrison family?â
Sean patted Gwenâs back gently and sighed soundlessly.
The rest of the night passed in silence, and none of them slept. Sean and Gwen didnât leave, keeping vigil in Carolineâs apartment.
The next day, when Caroline woke up and found her place filled with people, she was taken aback with shock. âWhy are you guys here?â
Caroline didnât have an inkling of what had happened last night at all.
Seeing Caroline awake, Gwen lost it. Tears streamed from her eyes. âCarol, youâre awake. How do you feel now?â
Sitting upright in bed, Caroline shifted her suspicious gaze from Kirk to Gwen âWhat happened to me?â She thought that she must have sweated a lot, considering how sticky she felt all over.
Gwenâs eyes turned red again as she quickly turned to look at Sean.
Sean shot Caroline a smile. Then, he said to Kirk, âWeâre going outside. Weâll leave things here to you.â He dragged Gwen out of the room With that, only Caroline and Kirk were left in the bedroom.
Confused, Caroline looked at Kirk. She was wearing a faint smile as she asked, âWhatâs up with everyone, Kirk? Why do you all look so grim?â
Kirk sat by Carolineâs side. After a night with no sleep, there were bruises under his eyes. Seeing him like this, Caroline started getting worried.
âI found out what Mr. Morrison Senior said before he died.â
Carolineâs expression changed drastically.
âI also know why youâve been having nightmares lately.â
Caroline hurriedly said, âKirk, donât worry. I wonât leave you.
Kirk started to laugh lightly. Even so, his eyes were filled with pain. âDarling, listen to me.â
Caroline could only shut her mouth.
Iâve hired a psychiatrist to see you.â
Caroline sat quietly, looking at Kirk, waiting for him to finish speaking.
After a long silence, Caroline nearly began to wonder if there was anything more to it. Kirk spoke up again, âThe process will be very painful. If you canât take itâ¦â
Caroline clutched Kirkâs collar and interrupted him. âIf I go for treatment, does that mean I wonât be haunted by nightmares anymore? Does it mean I wonât be haunted by guilt anymore..
Carolineâs voice grew softer, but the strength with which she held Kirkâs collar became greater.
âItâs not that I donât want to do anything to make up for the fact that Grandpa died because of me. Itâs that ⦠I really donât want to leave you ⦠Kirk, am I very selfish?â
As Caroline spoke, she started to cry. All the pain and resentment she had pushed down started to overflow.
âIâve been having nightmares nearly every night. I dream of Grandpa saying that Iâm heartless. That, if you werenât here, I would have been with Eddy long ago. But I have you, and I donât want to leave you.â
Outside the door, Gwen felt her heart breaking as she heard Carolineâs heart wrenching sobs. She wanted to go inside, but Sean stopped her. She could do nothing but stay by the door, feeling her anxiety burning within her.
In the room, Kirk was holding Caroline by the waist, letting her cry to her heartâs content. Her tears soaked into his shirt.
Caroline was suffering so much pain, but she wasnât the only one. Right then, Kirk had to give Caroline the support she needed.
âHow can that be?â Kirk held Caroline and spoke like he was coaxing a child. âNo, youâre not selfish, Carrie. A selfish person would never call themselves selfish.â
