Kirk listened to Marietta babbling on as she eliminated the possible candidates, Marietta did this three times and finally arrived at the most unlikely answer. “I–Is it Carrie?”

“Yes,” Kirk answered calmly.

On the other end of the phone, Marietta’s eyes widened in surprise. “What? Carrie is your wife?”

Kirk waited for Marietta to calm down before speaking. “Yes, she is.”

“Hang on. What’s going on here?” Marietta was so curious that she wanted to head over there and ask for details.

Kirk sat down on the chair. “It’s a long story, so I’ll tell you when we have the time. I called you to ask you for a favor.”

“What is it?”

“Carrie doesn’t know my identity, so I hope you can help me keep my secret when you visit today.”

Marietta gently rested her head on the headboard. She said, “Matthew, you’re making this difficult for me. You know me–I’m an awful liar.”

Kirk grinned. “But you will. You should be able to do it for your daughter.”

Marietta was speechless. Kirk was indeed a businessman. He knew exactly what to say.

“All right, I’ll try,” Marietta joked. She didn’t really want to expose Kirk’s lie.

“Is it Marietta?” Kirk walked out of the room with messy hair.

“I don’t think so. It’s still early.” Caroline looked through the peephole, and she was proven wrong.

“It really is her. What is she doing here so early?” Caroline muttered.

She remembered telling Marietta that she didn’t need to come so soon. She opened the door and said, “Aunt Mary, you-”

Before she could finish her words, Marietta’s eyes landed on Kirk.

Caroline followed Marietta’s gaze and introduced him, “Aunt Mary, this is my husband, Kirk.”

“Kirk, huh…” Marietta almost laughed out loud.
