Chapter 565
Bogus Billionaire
Caroline opened Google on her phone, and after entering Mariettaâs name, she clicked on the Wikipedia article about her.
According to the article, Marietta had had a happy family when she was young, but her life had changed after her daughter had been abducted.
That incident had also given her the incentive to start writing. She hoped to become famous so that her abducted daughter could find her and return to her.
Caroline fiddled with her clothes as she read the article, feeling sorry for Marietta.
She couldnât believe that this seemingly sharpâtongued woman had tragically experienced the loss of her child. On top of that, her husband had abandoned her for his lover in her early years.
But when she saw Marietta, she dared to guess that no one could tell she went through such an experience.
âIâm sorry.â
Caroline replied reluctantly, âI must have reminded you of some bad memories.â
Marietta replied very slowly, probably because she was processing her emotions. âItâs okay. In fact, I havenât brought this up for many years.â
Caroline apologized once more.
After a long while, Marietta replied, âI just checked the time. It should be around 3:00 am in Easton now. Why arenât you asleep? Did I wake you up?â
Caroline smiled when she saw such a cordial message from the woman notorious for her sharp wit.
In fact, Marietta wasnât as scary as rumors claimed her to be. At least she was kind and gentle to her.
Moreover, someone like her was actually considerate of the time difference. Honestly, it was rare for Caroline to see a big shot like her.
Caroline was nestled on the couch. After glancing at the sleeping Kirk, she sent a message to Marietta.
âNo, it has nothing to do with you. I just happened to have a nightmare.â
âA nightmare? What was it about?â
Caroline leisurely explained the nightmare she had to Marietta.
Marietta explained, âThereâs a saying in Easton: dreams at night reflect daytime thoughts. You must be having this nightmare because you were worried about something.â
Caroline didnât want to discuss the reasons for the nightmare, so she changed the subject. âYou seem to know Eastonian very well.â
Marietta texted, âMy parents are Eastonian, but I grew up in Yudonia and became a citizen there.
Thatâs why many people think Iâm from there.â
âI see. When I first met you, I was a little surprised to find out you were Eastonian.â
âActually, after I lost my daughter, I often had nightmares about her.â
Marietta brought up the nightmares again. She seemed to be too lonely, so she was eager to have someone to talk to.
She continued, âOnce, I dreamed of her holding a knife to my neck, asking me why I let her get abducted. So many years had passed, but I still had nightmares like this.
âBut ever since I talked to you, I havenât had a nightmare like this again. Itâs amazing.â
Caroline said, âThatâs great, Ms. Weiss. Iâm sure youâll find your daughter again one day.â
âI hope so.â
Marietta asked, âCaroline, can I call you Carrie?â
âOf course, it would be my pleasure.â
âThen, you shouldnât call me Ms. Weiss anymore. It sounds so formal. Just call me Aunt Mary. When I publish my new play, Iâll get you to write my foreword.â
Caroline was excited. âIt would be my honor.â
She would never have even imagined that she would have the chance to write Mariettaâs foreword.
This woman was too approachable.
âAll right. I wonât disturb you anymore. Good night,â Marietta texted.
Caroline replied, âGood night.â
After saying good night, Caroline couldnât resist hugging Kirk and kissing him furiously.
Kirk woke up and murmured sleepily, âAre you done reading?â
âYeah. Marietta even asked me to write the foreword for her play!â Caroline smiled brightly.
âI donât think sheâs as difficult as everyone says. On the contrary, I think sheâs a sweet person. If she hadnât lost her daughter, maybe she would beâhey! What are you doing?â
Caroline felt a chill and hurriedly reached out to stop Kirk.
