Chapter 498

Kirk must have purposely made Charles come and see her. After all, Kirk knew that she would never make things difficult for innocent people.

Besides, Caroline wouldn’t change her mind about the divorce, no matter who Kirk sent.

Reinforcing her determination on this decision, Caroline finally said, “Let him in.”

“Alright.”

After Cheryl walked out, Sonia spoke up. “Caroline, do you need me to leave?”

After some thought, Caroline nodded. “Wait for me in the waiting room next door. I still have some things to tell you. You’re not in a rush to leave, are you?”

“No, no. I’m free,” Sonia said with a smile.

“I’ve declined all gigs so that I can get this role.”

Caroline replied, “Helena must be lecturing you non–stop because of that.”

Sonia swallowed. She didn’t tell Caroline about just how angry Helena was about all this.

Helena was already incensed that she still wanted to compete for the lead role in “Daughter of the Sea“.

After finding out that she had rejected all other gigs, Helena had been so mad that she had scolded her for days on end.

Sonia knew that Helena only wanted what was best for her, though. She knew that Helena didn’t want her to waste so much effort on a role that she would never get. But she still wanted to give it a try.

Although she knew that the role would most likely be Daphne’s, this opportunity was hard to come by. She would regret it if she didn’t even try.

“It’s fine. I’m already used to Helena nagging at me.”

After saying that, Sonia opened the door. “I’ll be off now, then.”

Caroline nodded. Once Sonia left, she took a deep breath and suppressed the shiver that was beginning to spread through her body.

After a moment, there was a knock at the door. Caroline held her water glass harder as she said, ”

Come in.”

Cheryl pushed the door open. “Caroline, Mr. Lane is here.”

Caroline regarded Charles coldly. Then, she said to Cheryl, “You can go out.”

“Okay,” said Cheryl. She closed the door behind her when she left.

Standing before Caroline, Charles was full of smiles. “Madam …”

Caroline cut him off. “Mr. Lane–no, I should refer to you as the assistant to SY Group’s president.”

Charles swayed and nearly fell. “M–Madam, what are you saying? I don’t understand?”

“Mr. Lane, your ability to play dumb is just as practiced as your boss‘.”

Caroline’s grip tightened on her glass. “Tell me, how do you plan on lying to me during your visit today?”

“Madam, I think you must have misunderstood something.”

Without any proof, Charles could only keep denying Kirk’s identity. “How could I be the assistant to SY Group’s president? I’m only Mr. Morrison’s assistant …”

“Charles Lane!” Caroline let out a cold chuckle.

“Kirk’s wife abroad is Daphne Dawson, and Daphne is the wife of Eddy’s second uncle. Tell me, what’s the relationship between Kirk and Eddy’s second uncle?”

Charles’s face turned ashen in a second. His mind buzzed with the revelation.

Caroline’s gaze was fixed on him. She had hoped more than anything that this was all not true.

But now, she could no longer allow herself such illusions. The truth was the truth. Her hope wouldn’t change it.

“M–M–Madam …” Charles wanted to escape, but he had handled many situations before that required him to be adaptable.

He regained his composure and said, “T–this is simply too strange. There must be a misunderstanding here, Í–I will investigate it carefully.”

“A misunderstanding?” Caroline laughed.

“The biggest misunderstanding is me thinking Kirk isn’t part of the Morrison family. Go back and tell him to go to City Hall on Wednesday! That’s all.”

After saying this, Caroline called for Cheryl to send Charles off.
