Chapter 378
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
Aria âIâm the problem in this marriage?â His words made me chuckle. Last I remembered, he had not instructed me to stay put.
âWhere did you get these things?â I reached out to touch his shoulder, but Vince stepped back.
âWe have to go.â
âNo, wait!â I called out, making him stop in his steps. âD-do you know how much money we can make selling those?â
âAs well as put a target on our backs,â Vince said. âIt wouldnât be that much different from suicide.â
âOh, my god.â I squealed. âThis is like heaven!â
Vince wrapped his hand around my wrist. âAria, letâs go.â
âDoes your uncle know about this?â I placed my hands on top of his, my eyes begging him to give me an answer.
No.
âI figured. If he did, you wouldnât have to marry me.â I said my thoughts out loud. âIf itâs respect and power youâre after, hereâs your key.â My hands reached for one of the weapons.
âIâm not-
âBoom.â I winked, pointing it at him. âEnough to blow up a household.â
Bothered, Vince placed his hand on top of the trigger as he lowered my hand and took away the weapon. âThatâs why Iâm trying to keep them away from people like you.â
âPeople like me?â I pointed to myself. âRight, because the Garcias are model citizens.â He was one to talk.
Vince huffed, probably knowing there was nothing else for him to add.
âCome on. Weâre going.â He roughly grabbed my hand, only for me to free myself from his grip.
âWhy would you want to live in Christianâs shadow-when all of this is enough to surpass the Lambertis?â
âI donât want to surpass anyone,â Vince spoke humbly, shaking his head. âCertainly not, my friend.â
âI know he wouldâve.â
âAria_please.â
It was the truth. Christian Lamberti did not seem like the type to back down from doing anything to please his friend.
âArialâ Vince squeezed my hand, staring into my eyes. Not going to lie. He looked pretty hot-but I was convinced his head was empty.
Why would he not want to be on top?
âYou canât tell anyone about this-do you understand?â
I grinned at his seriousness. âYes, Vince, daddy.â
âStop.â Vince sighed, frustrated. âAria, Iâm not kidding. Iâm serious.â He spoke. âItâd be better to keep something like this to ourselves.â
âGood.â
âThese weapons are dangerous.â
âI know.â
âThey canât fall into the wrong hands âDonât worry.â I nodded my head. âYouâre my husband. I respect you-and I wonât tell a soul.â
+5 Bonus âAnd there were like endless containers!â I paced back and forth, telling Anthony about my findings.
It was late at night, and like always, he was in my room to discuss my day. He sat on the end of my bed, taking in every word.
âAll containers are full of those rare weapons?â He asked. âAre you sure?â
âYes!â
Vince told me not to tell anyone, but Angelo was a special case. I trusted him, and he was the one who had encouraged me to take a look at the basement in the first place.
âHe didnât say much about where he got it from, obviously is trying to keep me out of it-but those things can make us a fortune,â
âWhy do you think he doesnât want to do anything with it?â
âBecause of Christian.â There was no doubt about it.
âLamberti?â
âYes.â I nodded, thinking about their brotherhood. âThose two, together with Serenaâs brother, are like in a polyamorous relationship.â Had I not known otherwise, I wouldâve thought they were the ones married. âVince doesnât want to outdo that family.â
âBecause he doesnât have a reason to.â Angelo shrugged.
âSorry?â
âI know youâve just been here for a while-but if it werenât for Christian, Vince would probably not even be alive.â He shared a part of Vinceâs life he wouldnât talk about. âWhen everything went down, and all families turned their back on anyone having to do something with the Garcias-Christian remained by his side.â
âWas it really that bad?â I wondered as I tried to find every reason not to feel guilty about all of this.
He wouldnât have been alive? What the hell was that all about?
âA-are you talking about the coma?â I wondered. âWhen Fabio shot Vince?â
âI wish I was.â Angelo whispered. âLetâs just drop it. Thatâs not for me to tell.â
I felt an uncomfortable feeling down my stomach. The thought of Vince hurting and not being there to comfort him broke my heart.
I was not there, but Christian was âSo theyâre that close.â
âHe stayed with him while he was in a coma, took care of him, dropped everything to help him get healthy-so his loyalty is understandable.â
A deep sigh left my lips. âSo itâs a lost cause?â
âNo, not really.â Angelo shook his head. âYou just have to convince him enough to look past Christian and sell those weapons.
âHow?â It was easier said than done. âYou just told me Vince believes he owes him his life.â
âWell, easy. Make sure they donât get along.â
âKeep talking.â
âSteal something valuable, frame the Garcias-and see if Christian wonât do anything.â Angelo worked out his plan. âHe would have to because everyone depends on him. Same for Vince.â
âYouâve got it all figured out-donât you?â A delighted smile appeared.
Why couldnât I have thought about it myself?
The only way to stop their friendship would be to involve the business.
I grabbed two glasses and filled them with wine before handing one to Angelo.
âWhat would I do without you?â We clicked our glasses, but then it suddenly hit me. Why would someone like him, who should care for his own family-go that far to help mine?
âWhat is it?â Angelo asked, worried.
âWhy are you doing all of this for me?â I took a step back. Worst-case scenario, I had taken it too far by telling him, and he would raid the basement as we speak.
Angelo chuckled. âYouâre wondering because Iâm a Marino?â
I gave him a nod, awaiting his explanation.
âI care about you a lot, and I want the best for you.â He looked at me. âWeâve started rocky, but now I consider you my closest friend, and my loyalty lies with you-not my family.â
1â¦donât know what to say.â I didnât doubt his words even once as he made sure I could read his eyes.
âThatâs because you donât have to.â
The next day I wasted no time and was already headed to Vinceâs bedroom. âVincey!â I knocked on his door, granting him a new nickname. âVincey, Vince?â
No answer âVince-â
Finally, the door opened, and Vince blessed me with his presence, wearing nothing but a towel wrapped around his lower body.
Shamelessly, I checked him out.
âIt just amazes me how you keep on knocking until you get a response.â He spoke sarcastically, but I was already happy enough to see him crack jokes. That meant we had moved to the next level of our relationship.
âYou go and finish your shower.â I looked past him and focused on the sound of the running water.
âIâll just wait for you.â I pushed him aside and entered the room.
Vince forced a smile. âThatâs very nice of you, Aria. He waved me off, eager to get to the bathroom.
âYouâre a great wife!â
âT-thank you!â I yelled back, my volume at a ten. It was once again one of his sarcastic jokes, but I didnât care.
As he continued his shower, I patiently sat on his bed, waiting for his return. I didnât mind waiting, and back in the day, dad used to make me wait all the time.
Sometime later, Vince stepped out in his boxers. âStill here?â He glared, drying his drained hair with a towel.
âWow,â I said loudly, having the sudden urge to touch him. As expected, he looked as if he had just jumped out of a movie. Perfect.
âYes, Iâm still here.â I followed him to his closet.
âWhen do I get to see whatâs underneath that?â My eyes moved to his boxers.
Vince rolled his eyes. âWhen you finish high school.â
âIâm twenty-one?â
âBarely.â He shot me a strained smile.
Sighing, I leaned against the wall. Ever since that basement thing, it appeared as if he had become even colder. âIâm a woman, I have needs, and I know you donât give a shit about this marriage and take care of yours-so what should I do about mine?â
What was I doing? I donât know.
Where did the confidence come from? Who knew?
All I knew was that I had gotten a wake-up call when Vince finished dressing and stepped right in front of 1.
Nervously, I bit my lip as he lowered himself to meet my eyes.
âH-hey. I appreciate you still taking my advice.â I touched the fabric of his suit with a nervous giggle.
âOh wow, the material-â
âDo you know what you should do?â He grabbed my shoulders, and I could not move a muscle or say a word. âAsk Angelo to take care of it. Heâll do it gladly.â
Angelo? No, I couldnât accept that.
âI donât want him. I want my husband.â My eyes were sharp.
âYour husband doesnât want to.â
âI know.â I nodded. âIs it because youâre not attracted to me?â
Vince scoffed, releasing his grip on my shoulders. âWe went through this before. It has nothing to do with the way you look.â
âThen what is it?â
He frowned. âI refuse to let you win this game of yours. I wonât let you have your way.â
Game? I felt a sharp pain in my heart.
Did he really think my love for him was nothing more than a game?
âWhat are you doing here anyway, and what happened to you? Arenât you supposed to be dry and boring?â
The comment about me being dry and dull made me cackle. Despite the rumors, it wasnât as if he was the life of the party, at least not around me.
âOh, Vincey-
âDonât call me that.â He pointed out.
âVincenzo.â
âDonât call me by my full name either.â
âThen what am I supposed to call you?â The cold shoulder began driving me insane. âMwan?â
âMwan?â Vince tried reading my face in utter confusion.
âMan without a name?â
âLetâs not make jokes ever again.â He looked disgusted. âYouâre beginning to sound like Enzo Lamberti.â
âEnzo?â The comparison was definitely not a compliment. I had heard many things about him, but most werenât great.
âWhat is it really?â Vince took a breath. If he couldâve dragged me out of the room without any consequences, he most likely would have. Thatâs why I decided on a quick dishonest apology.
âI feel terrible about everything that has happened between us. I shouldâve never disrespected you and gone inside that basement, commanding things you do not want to do.â I said. âI will drop it, I will not ask you about it anymore-and I just want us to get along.
âYouâre apologizing?â He cleared his throat, eyeing me suspiciously. âThanks?â
âNo problem.â The high-pitched tone almost exposed my lies. âSo, what are your plans for today?â
+5 Bonus I wasnât an idiot, and I was only here for one purpose. Vince had a routine, and usually, on this day, he would run by the Lamberti warehouse for business with Christian.
That would be the right time to execute Angeloâs plan. Steal something valuable and slowly make the two so-called soulmates despise each other.
âI have to make some runs, handle some business-â
âCan I join you?â
âSure.â Vince awkwardly put his hands in his pockets as he nodded his head. He didnât want me around anymore, I knew that-but soon, that would change.
âReally?â
âI canât stop you,â Vince spoke. âWeâre leaving in an hour.â
