Chapter 337
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
Elena âIâm here to make it up to you.â He spoke. âIâm ready to listen to you, trust you-and Iâm ready to take you home.â
Not knowing what else to do, I took a step back and shook my head. âN-no.â I breathed, looking dad in his eyes. âIâm not going anywhere-Iâm not!â
âElena-
âIâm not.â
âJust hear us out, please.â Alex jumped in. He didnât raise his voice, he didnât look at me the wrong way. and it almost seemed as if he was afraid I could run out any second. âPlease.â He pleaded.
I folded my arms and looked at Lucas, who shrugged his shoulders.
How the hell did he get involved anyway?
Thatâs what I would like to know.
âYou know what, Iâll hear you guys out-but thatâs it. I spoke before hearing three relieved sighs.
As promised, I sat beside Lucas with dad and Alex on the opposite side. My previous thoughts, occupied with Marvinâs terrifying persona, had suddenly vanished.
What was up with these three, and why were they together?
Perhaps to take down Marvin?
Or maybe it was nothing other than a scheme to take me home?
Deep down, I knew I had to go back at one point. I knew that that was the sacrifice I had to make to keep Marvin safe-but now was not the time.
Lucas cleared his throat, carefully nudging my shoulder. âSo, do you want something to eat?â
âNo,â I answered dryly. âJust get it over with and start talking.â
Alex and Lucas shot each other a look before moving their gaze to dad. âSo I suppose Iâll do the talkingâ His lips curled as they always would whenever he used to speak rubbish.
He took a breath. âSo it all started when Lucas showed up at our doorsteps.â
Without missing a single detail, dad went through every little thing while Alex and Lucas filled in the missing pieces whenever necessary.
He spoke about Lucasâ mom, their deal to take down Mario in exchange for Marvin, and his ultimate planı to bring me back home.
The way those words left his mouth, as if he hadnât expected it to go any other way, scared me.
After all this time, he still hadnât learned anything and was out to control my life. The only difference? This time he was of value to me.
âDo you really think Iâm going to keep my mouth shut and let you throw Marvin back to prison?â I blinked, startled, but dad shook his head.
âNo.â He sulked. âBut after hearing Lucasâ theory, I believe Marvin had nothing to do with Stevie and was merely covering for someone,â Dad spoke. âJust give me that personâs name, come back home-and weâll leave everything behind us.â
The blank expression on my face did not mean a thing, as my thoughts were with Tiago. Hearing dad was not after Marvin anymore was supposed to make me feel happy, but knowing how much Tiago meant to his elder brother didnât change much.
Lucas, who sat beside me, shifted uncomfortably. He was not only a detective but also Tiagoâs brother. It wasnât difficult for him to complete the puzzle.
âI know he didnât do it because I told you all along-but Iâm afraid I canât help you-
âMarvin not doing any of these things doesnât make him a better person.â Dad spat. âHeâs still a monster, a killer-and Iâm allowing you to do this the easy way.â
Heâs still a monster, a killer.
I was well aware.
âCome on, Elena.â Dad changed his tone, begging me to give him an answer. âJust tell me, please. I know you want to.
I did want to.
I wanted all of this to be over.
âV-Victoria.â My mouth moved before I could even process what I was saying. âI gave her a USB which should take down the person responsible for this, so you donât need to get involved.â
âAnd whatâs on it?â Dad asked, completely unfazed about my investigation. Of course, he knew me well enough that I could not sit back and watch while he dragged Marvinâs name through the mud.
âWhoâs on it?â
Lucas, who had been awfully quiet, fastened his breaths and lowered his head. âItâs Tiago, isnât it?â
He spoke up. âYouâre trying to protect him, arenât you?â
I was left speechless as dad looked at me with big eyes, waiting for confirmation. I hadnât expected Lucas to rat out his brother.
âSomeone put him up to this, right?â Lucas asked. I ignored him and searched for dadâs eyes, ensuring he would feel my sincerity.
âDad, you canât hurt him. He was just a kid who didnât know any better and followed orders.â I stood up for Tiago. âWhatever youâre feeling now, you canât hurt him-please.â
Dad looked anywhere but my eyes and shrugged me off. âWho put him up to this?â He asked. âTell me.â
No.
âNo?â Dad widened his eyes while Alex tried calming him down. âWhat do you mean, no?â
âNo, as in no,â I repeated. âIâll give you the name and after all of this is over, Iâll come back home and cut off all contact with all Castillos, including Marvin,â I told him. âBut you need to promise me one thing.â
I closed my eyes, praying he would accept my request. âI need you to only go after the person responsible.
I need you to let go of your hatred towards The Castillos, and I need you to spare Tiagoâs life.â
âAnd if I do all of that, youâll really come back home?â
âYou have my word. All you have to do is promise me âI promise,â Dad spoke, reaching for my hand. I slowly opened my eyes as he stared right back at me. âWhatever it takes to get you back, I promise.â
Trusting his words mightâve been the biggest risk in this situation, but I just had to trust him. I didnât have much choice, and if anyone could do something about it, it was dad.
âIt was Panther,â I spoke. âOnly him.â
The table went silent. Dad, Lucas, and Alex all looked at each other, waiting for whoever spoke first.
âPedro Vidal?â Dad eventually opened his mouth, widening his eyes. He didnât seem shocked at all.
âYes,â I confirmed. âI havenât known for that long. It all started a few weeks ago.â
Like that, I told everyone my version of the story and gave a detailed explanation. I told them about Pantherâs weird behavior and Tiagoâs words, with the only thing left out is the events of today.
âHe has been threatening you?â Dad balled his fist. Even without telling him about what Panther had done today, he was furious-so I could only imagine.
âDonât worry, dad, Iâm fine-â
âIâll kill him!â He slammed his fist on the table, his eyes looking dark and dangerous. In this case, violence was the answer, and I wanted Panther to get what he deservedâbut that would take some time.
âSo, how long do we have to wait for that stick?â Alex interfered. âWe canât mess this up, dad.â
âWe donât have to wait long,â I told him. âIâm sure Victoria is on it.â I hoped.
âAre you sure?â
âYes, certain,â I said. âDad, you canât do anything crazy. Iâm fine, and I have..Lucas.â
Lucas, who had been quiet for a while, reached for dadâs hand and squeezed him. âI promise I wonât let anything happen to her.â I could sense guilt in his voice. âYou have my word.â
âWhy?â Dad sighed, dropping his head. He pulled back his hand from Lucas, âWhy, what?â
âWhy would you protect the person that pulled the trigger and murdered Stevic?â
Lucas shook his head, stuttering. He felt the same way about Tiago as I did. He didnât want to betray his brother, and I could understand him, âGeorge-
Tiago already paid for his mistakes.â I jumped in. Between Anyaâs death, his ongoing anxiety, and Marvinâs reaction when he would finally find out his younger brother betrayed him-there was no way Tiago would walk free.
âNow that weâre on the subject.â The thought suddenly occurred to me.â I really think we should investigate Anyaâs murder-because no matter how much I think about it, I just can not believe the Hernandez was responsible.â
âDanny was framed for Stevieâs murder, but thatâs not a reason to execute Anya.â Lucas agreed.
âBecause of Marvin, Danny got stabbed, but the Hernandez still didnât do a thing.â
Dad tapped his finger on the table. âDo you think Pedro was behind that too?â
âHe might.â Alex gave his opinion. âPanther is always with Marvin, and strangely enough, he wasnât there when it happened.â He said. âBut Elena-you were there.â
The flashbacks of that night still gave me nightmares, and it wasnât something I liked thinking about.
Holding Anya in my arms while she was choking on her own blood was terrifying.
Dad, Lucas, and Alex all stared at me, waiting for me to speak up. âIt didnât look like that guy was after Anya,â I spoke, recalling that night.
âBut right before sheâ¦â I stammered. âI actually think she recognized the man.â
âAre you sure?â Dad asked.
âIâm notâ¦â I said. âLetâs just wait for Victoria.â
âYes.â Lucas agreed. âItâs probably for the best.â
A sigh escaped from dadâs lips as he looked at Lucas in sympathy as if he felt sorry for him.âWhat?â
âNothing. You would have such a nice future ahead of you.â Dad breathed. âIf only you werenât a Castillo.â He shared his backhanded compliment.
âIf only.â Lucas chuckled. âCrazy, isnât it?â
After hearing Lucas got close to the Castillos on purpose to destroy his family, I believed for it to be true- but now I wasnât that sure anymore.
He was only after Panther and was put on protecting Tiago and Marvin.
Was he slowly getting used to having a family?
âIâll have to take her back now.â Lucas looked at his phone. âMarvin, send me a text.â
A wave of anxiety washed over me as I wondered why Marvin needed to communicate with his brother. I got into Lucasâ car without explaining, and he never asked anything.
One word about Marvinâs actions and dad wouldâve dragged me home.
âWhat did he say?â
âHe asked if we were together because someone saw you getting in my car.â Lucas chuckled, getting up from the chair.
âIs everything okay?â Dad stuck his nose in my business. Being raised by a DEA agent meant controlling my facial expression, especially since Alex and Dad always had the urge to see through my lies.
âY-yes, I just promised to get home early so we could spend some time.â I knew I messed up but hoped dad wouldnât give any mind to it.
âAfter all of this is over-youâll come back home, right?â He asked as if he was onto me, but he didnât drag on the subject.
