Chapter 323
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
âSo then that woman asked me if I had a nice dinner.â I rolled my eyes. It was a good thing I decided to join them out back, considering Marvin hadnât even told me about this rumor. âI was a bit bloated from the food, so I rubbed my belly and told her that the babyâs doing well.â
Panther and Lucas listened attentively as I tried my hardest to explain the misunderstanding, which I hadnât even been aware of. Apparently, Marvin and I were the talk of the town after Mistyâs parents told everyone we were engaged and expecting a child.
Was that why Marvin kept his distance from me?
Was he embarrassed?
Panther burst out laughing. âSee, and thatâs why itâs better to keep your mouth shut.â He gave me his unwanted advice. âI had to learn it the hard way, but these rich people..they donât know how to communicate.â
âYes!â I agreed.
Panther, who was drunk, grabbed my hand. âTheyâre not like you and me.â He said. âBut thatâs why Nike you youâre like my little sister-
Due to his coughing fit, he was unable to finish his sentence. It didnât matter because I didnât even want him to finish it. Little sister? I was indeed a little sister, but only to Alex. The brother I had distanced myself from to be with Marvin.
âHey, are you okay?â Lucas, who was still sober, asked me. He carefully placed his hand on top of mine and looked into my eyes as if he was asking me for permission.
âIâm good, thank you.â I lowered my head, knowing Lucas wasnât buying it. âIs it your family?â He whispered.
My eyes turned big, and I raised my head to look at Panther-but all I could hear were his snores. He clearly couldnât take his liquor very well.
âDonât worry about him. Heâs done for the night.â Lucas chuckled. âWe should head back inside and talk.â He suggested. âI want to get to know you.â
Get to know me why?
âWe shouldnât leave Panther alone,â I told him, but Lucas didnât care.
âPedro is a grown man, and he can take care of himself.
Hearing him call Pedro by his birth name was proof enough that Lucas was a determined and opinionated person who had a mind of his own.
Quite the opposite of Marvin, who obeyed his dadâs every word until he couldnât take it anymore.
Almost forced to go along with Lucas, I got up from the couch and followed him back inside. He was the one who could expose my identity whenever he felt like it, so I had to keep him close. Who knew if he would be keeping his word?
âSo, can I offer you something else to drink?â
âNo, Iâm good.â Lucas shook his head. He sat down at the kitchen table while I joined him. âSo, where is Marvin?â He jumped right into the subject.
âW-why?â
âBecause he happens to be my brother.â Lucas raised his brow and smirked. âWe didnât start off on the right foot, and both of our encounters ended with him havingâ¦anger issues.â
Anger issues?
âHeâll be here soon.â I nodded. âAt leastâ¦I think he will âAre you guys fighting?â
âNo, heâs just busy!â I clarified.
âWith?â
âStuff.â
âWhat kind of stuff?â Lucas kept pushing for answers. I gave him a doubtful look and watched as uncomfortable laughter left his mouth. âIâm sorry, itâs just an instinct.â
I figured. By the looks of it, Lucas was a workaholic who could not draw a line between playing detective and having a normal conversation.
âSo your mom andâ¦Marvinâs dad?â I asked. If he was allowed to do it, I was allowed to do it as well.
Lucas nodded.
âMy mom passed away. She used to be a maid in this household.â
âI heard, and Iâm so sorry about that,â I spoke.
âThe maids around here seem pretty tight. I bet they knew her.â
I instantly regretted my words. Maybe I shouldnât have said that, especially since I didnât know his intentions. He said he wanted to know his family, but what if he didnât? What if there was more to it?â
âHmm, interesting.â Lucas went into deep thoughts.
âWhat?â
âNothing thank you.â He smiled, ending the conversation. Why would he thank me âSo why are you keeping your identity a secret?â Lucas didnât pass the opportunity to ask me a question.
âI think itâs best for everyone.â I simply answered. I wasnât even that open towards Rona, so why would I open up to him?
âSo do I. You made a good decision.â He spoke. âSo you chose love over your family.â
âW-well, it wasnât really like that.â I defended myself. At least, that was something I was trying to tell myself. âMy dad kicked me out-â
âBecause you chose love over family,â Lucas repeated. I looked around the room, ensuring there werenât any maids and took a slight breath. It would be for the best to drop it.
âSure, if thatâs what you want to call it.â
Lucas had a regretful expression on his face. âIâm sorry, I didnât want to make you feel uncomfortable.â
âThatâs okay-trust me,â I said, not making a big deal out of it. Lucas leaned his chin in his hand and squinted his eyes.
âWhy do you think itâs okay?â He wondered. âIs it because youâre used to the people in this household making you feel uncomfortable?â
âYouâre doing it again, detective.â
âIâm sorry.â He sighed. âI guess old habits never die.â Lucas was someone challenging to read, and I couldnât quite figure him out yet. He had so many questions, yet he chose to protect my identity.
âI guess they donât.â
âYou know, I love my dad and my brother-I really do.â I defended my actions. âJust putting it out there because I donât want you to get the wrong idea of me.
A warm smile appeared on Lucasâ lips. âSame here.â
I had the urge to tell him to smile more often, as it made him look more attractive-but I didnât want him to get the wrong idea.
âSo, how are you getting along with everyone?â I asked after an awkward moment of silence. Just like that. the smile on Lucasâ lips had vanished.
âWell, the madam of the house wants my head on a stick, and so do her sons.â He raised his brows.
I figured this had to do with these âencountersâ with Marvin, because as far as I was concerned-
Marvin didnât care that much.
âMarioâs been nice.
âAnd Karina?â
Lucas clicked his tongue. âHighly unstable, probably one line away from ODâing, but oh well, she has a good personality and has been texting me every single day.â
His honesty threw me off guard. If he planned on maintaining a healthy relationship with his family, that was definitely something he had to get rid of.
âHave you dated your pen pal before? Is that something you do often?â
I got chills throughout my body, suddenly remembering that I had already told this man my whole life story. If anything, him being here was dangerous-so why did I want to trust him!
âNoâ¦first time.â
Before the subject could get anywhere, Marvin entered the kitchen with a paled expression on his face. He looked from me to Lucas and walked closer.
âHere you are.â He pulled out a chair and wrapped his arm around my shoulder in a protective matter. â1 texted you.â He spoke, ignoring Lucas as he turned to meet my eyes. âMultiple times.â
âHey, if you get to leave me on read-that means I get to do it as well.â I playfully pushed away his arm. Marvinâs cheeks flushed red. âIâm sorry, I didnât know that was a crime.â He spoke. âI guess Iâm still not used to thisâ¦texting stuff.â
I covered my mouth with my hand, trying not to laugh. Anyone wouldâve thought Marvin had been in prison for centuries, but it had only been a few years.
âI see you were having fun without me.â He finally turned to Lucas. âWith myâ¦brother.â
Lucas chuckled. âI get the message, and you donât have to worry.â He said. âSheâs not my type.
Better yet- I wouldnât touch her with a 10-foot pole.â
Alright, I could perfectly understand what he was trying to do here, but was that necessary?
âWhat do you mean sheâs not your type?â Marvin spoke, offended. I knew that tone all too well because he used that whenever he felt like teasing someone.
âMarvin.â I giggled as he raised his hand to stop me from talking.
âThen do you think Elena is ugly?â
Lucas stuttered, trying to find the words to explain himself. âIâm sorry, I was just trying to get on your good side!â He spoke, flustered.
âBy offending my girl right in front of me?â
âI didnât mean to offend her-â
âSo you didnât call her an ugly pig just a second ago?â Marvin called him out. Lucas shook his head, confused. Surprisingly enough, this was a sign that Marvin felt comfortable enough to joke around with Lucas, meaning perhaps he did want to know him a bit better.
Marvin burst out in laughter while I joined him.
âHeâs just playing. This is how he jokes around.â I explained to Lucas, who sighed, relieved. âI know, itâs stupid.â
âBut I got him good-didnât I?â Marvin pointed out.
Lucas grew an embarrassed smile. âYeah, whatever.â He shrugged as if Marvinâs words hadnât affected him just seconds ago.
Marvin pulled me closer. âElena, whatâs our judgment on him?â He whispered loud enough for him to hear. The truth was that I had no answer to that question, but Marvin trusted my judgment.
âNosy, but we like him,â I spoke out loud, staring into Lucasâ eyes. Lucas shot me a grateful nod, not knowing this was all so he wouldnât expose my identity âDo we?â Marvin looked at Lucas. âSo, how did you end up here?â
âPanther invited me, but heâsâ¦â
âKnocked out?â
âYes, something like that,â Lucas confirmed. âSo youâre back from work?â
Marvin paused for a second. âYes, itâs been a long day.â His voice almost cracked, making me wonder what had happened.
âDoing?â Lucas went into detective mode, but unlike me-Marvin wasnât here for it.
âStuff that doesnât concern you.â He politely put him in his place, making Lucas hold up his hands in surrender. âGot it.â
Awkwardness filled the room, which was something I couldnât handle. âHey, why did I have to hear from Panther that Iâm not only pregnant but engaged as well?â I laughed at Marvin.
âHe told you?â Marvin frowned before moving his eyes to my empty finger. âWhereâs your ring?â
âYou embarrass me, so I took it off.â I grinned.
âNo, seriously-whereâs your ring?â
âI took it off for work.â I kissed his cheek to calm him down. Lucas looked back and forth between us and placed his hands on the table. âSo, I think thatâs my cue to go.â
âNo, not so soon.â Marvin stopped him. âWe were just getting to know each other.â
âWere we?â
âWere you?â I followed Lucasâ words. Marvin released me from his grip and walked towards the cabinet as Lucasâ eyes met mine.
âDo you drink?â
âI doâ¦.do you?â
âIâm a Castillo.â Marvin grabbed a bottle. âOh, I forgot, youâre one too.â
Marvin and Lucas were deeply immersed in conversation as I got interrupted by the sound of my phone, and received a text from the least expected person, Tiago.
Tiago:
I have something important to tell you.
Iâm in front of the mansion. Donât tell anyone Iâm here.
I locked my phone and stared straight ahead. Was this a trap, or was it valuable information about this person he was so afraid of? Whatever it was, it appeared to be pretty serious.
I know I promised to focus on Marvin, but what if this could be the information I needed? The information which could restore the bond with my family and the key to the person who killed Maddens.
The key to clearing Marvinâs name?
âGive me a minute. Iâll be right backâ
