Chapter 304
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
Marvin âShe can absolutely not stay here. I donât know what the hell Panter is thinking-
I entered the library, searching for my mom. Elena, who was exhausted, had decided to take a nap, which gave me enough time to think about my decision.
âYes, I know Marvin.â My mom yawned, getting up from her chair. She threw her book onto the side table and walked closer. âSo, what are you going to do now?â
It wasnât my intention to let her stay here, but kicking her out was also not an option. I didnât want her near the Castilloâs, and especially not in the lionâs den-as if one dinner wasnât bad enough.
We were not an ordinary family, and anyone directly involved with us had to be prepared to their lives at stake. I took my distance to protect her, and this was not what I wanted.
put I had to get her out of here, and I had to do it quickly.
âAre you done with the preparations for the house?â I asked. âYes, you can move in next week.â My mom confirmed.
That was good news. That meant Elena could move in with me until we could come up with a perfect solution. âGood, Elenaâs moving in with me.â
âOh wow.â My mom frowned.
âOh wow, what?â
âNothing.â She smirked. âIâm sorry, but what is she exactly to you?â
âWhat?â
She let out a frustrated sigh. âWhy do you want to take care of her?â
Why did I want to take care of her? She was the only regular person I could talk to. She needed my help, and she was my friend-so it was only normal for me to take care of her. âJust because.â
âI think you feel guilty because you couldnât take care of Tiago-so you moved on to Elena instead.â
My mom concluded. âBecause you feel obligated to protect someone to make yourself believe that youâre a good personâ¦.thatâs in your nature, and thatâs who you are.
I didnât utter a word. My mom had a point, and I hated it whenever she was right. I couldnât take care of my brother when he needed my help, but I could take care of Elena. âSince when did you become a psychologist?â
âDid you see those bruises on her wrist?â I quickly changed the subject. The thought of someone hurting Elena made my blood boil. No man should hurt a woman, and especially not a father. We could say a lot about Mario Castillo, but even he would not lay his hand on Women.
My mom lowered her head. âI did-â
âI should just kill her dad and her brother for being useless-â
âMarvin! âMy momâs loud voice cut me off, waking me up from my darkest thoughts. âWe canât just eliminate people because you feel like it!â She hissed. âYouâre better than that.â
âI know, I know.â
âAnd lower your voice.â My mom whispered. âYou know the maids like to gossip about everything.â
She spoke as she made her way to the window. I followed my mom and watched as my dad and Victor stepped out of the car.
âYou know, this is how I stalk you and Panther.â My mom shared. âSince I got nothing else to do other than taking care of Tiago, I made it my personal job.â
Well, then she wasnât very good at it.If she were any good, she wouldâve noticed the unfortunate atmosphere after my last encounter with Panther. I was still confused about my best friend being my nephewâs dad and did not know what to do.
The safest thing for both of us was to ignore it, so I did. I hadnât told my dad, my mom-or even Karina that I was aware. It wouldnât do any good.
Maybe that was the reason why I wanted to take care of Elena. She deserved it because she was one of the few who would never lie to me.
âSatan and Lilith are home. I better go talk to them.â I sighed, preparing myself to leave. âWhat did they do to deserve those nicknames?â My mom chuckled. If anyone knew why they deserved those nicknames, it had to be her.
âWhat didnât they do?â
After leaving the library, I went straight to my dadâs office and knocked on the door. The door got opened by Victor, who was clearly not that pleased to see, and stepped aside so I could enter. Trust me. I wasnât that happy to see him either.
My dad looked up from his desk. âMarvin, nice timing.â He greeted me. âWe were just discussing what our next move should be.â
A mocking chuckle escaped from Victorâs lips. âThis is what happens when you donât do anything.â
I did everything in my power to ignore the sound of Victorâs voice and sat down.
âDonât you think the Hernandezâ are too quiet?â My dad mentioned. Unimpressed, I shrugged my shoulders. âI donât know. You told me Freddie has changed, so perhaps he had a wake-up call after we hurt his son and decided to let it rest?â
Also, I had expected Freddie to at least make a move, but it didnât look like it.
âLet it rest?â My dad furrowed his brow. âAfter weâve framed Danny?â
Victor chuckled. âI told you heâs lacking brain cells.â
âVictor thinks we should go big.â My dad spoke a bit too enthusiastically. âPull out every string weâve got, start a warââ
âNo.â I shook my head.
Was he crazy?
âNo?â
âNo,â I repeated. âWhy would you start something which isnât even there in the first place?â 1 pointed out. âStabbing Danny was already risky enough-and the authorities are just waiting for us to make our move.â
âVictor thinks-
âI donât care what Victor thinks.â I controlled my anger. The only thing I knew was that Victor felt way too comfortable with making these types of calls. The way he controlled my dad was slowly becoming embarrassing.
âI actually think itâs time for me to get back to work, donât you?â I turned to look at Victor. He glared at me with gritted teeth. âI think you need more rest.â
âI just told you, I donât care about what you think.â
The tension in the room was high, and Mario clapped his hands laughing. âYouâre right, and maybe I am overthinking this Freddie situation.â My dad agreed.I was glad I could talk some sense into him.
âIâm glad I could stop you from doing something stupid, but thatâs not what Iâm here for.â
âThen what are you here for?â I could see the worry in my dadâs eyes. âIs it about Tiago?â
Since when did he care for Tiago?
âNo, Tiago is fine,â I reassured him. We all knew Tiago wasnât doing okay, but he was as fine as he could get.
âDo you remember Elena?â I cut to the chase.
âYes, I remember.â My dad nodded. âI wanted to reward her for getting Tiago to dinner, even if it was just for one evening-â
âSheâll be staying here for a while.â
My dad tilted his head with a confused expression on his face while Victor laughed at my words.
âUnacceptable. She canât do that.â Victor stated.
Who was he to decide over the Castillo estate? He wasnât even a Castillo.
âSheâs what?â My dad spoke after a slight delay, still in the midst of processing the news. âI hope you donât mean here, as in this house.â
âI am-â
âNo, no, no-I donât want it.â He shook his head in disapproval. âItâs too risky. Iâm with Victor on this one.â
As always.
Victor cleared his throat. âI know you wereâ¦locked up for quite some time-but arenât you aware of the secrets we keep in our house?â
Our house?
âYes, I am Victor.â I expressed my annoyance. âThatâs why itâs only temporarily-before 1 take her back to my place.â
âYour place?â Victor had yet again stuck his nose into my business. âDoesnât your friend have a house or a family?â
âNo, her dad kicked her out.â
âRed flag.â Victor pointed out. He was one to talk. The only red flag in this place was him.
âI donât remember asking for your permission or your opinion.â I cut him off. âHey!â My dad shouted.
âCanât the two of you just get along for once!â
âYou know what, do whateverâs necessary, as long as you wonât keep her here for too long.â He ended our discussion.
âThatâs what I said. I wonât.â
âAnd donât let her distract you from her work.â My dad added.
âDonât worry, when have I ever let anyone distract me?â I said as I looked straight into Victorâs eyes.
The biggest difference between us was that he felt intimidated by me, while I did not see him as my competition.
âIâm here, and Iâm focused.â
âWe can tell. Your presence is not something to miss.â Victor folded his arms.
âThatâs a good thing because it wonât be long before I am ready to take over the family business.â
And when that happened, he was the first person I was going to get rid of.
