Chapter 290
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
Marvin Elena: Good luck Marvin: For?
Elena: Youâre going home today!
Marvin: Already am.
Elena: Oh?
Elena: Why didnât you tell me!
I guess we were back at the emojis.
âWhoâs blowing up your phone like that? Is the job done?â
Victor forced his head over my shoulder, but before he could see anything, I locked my phone. âItâs nothing,â I spoke, annoyed. Any other day I wouldâve avoided him, but for now, I was still bound to a wheelchair.
It had been two weeks since Iâd seen Elena, and other than harassing me with thousandth text messages, she had often visited me at the hospital to take care of me. The two of us had become close friends, and I was certain that it was all it was going to be for now.
The tragedy at the wedding was still a sensitive topic, as well as prove that bringing innocent people into my life could be a risk, but I had made an exception for Elena. I would care for her from a distance.
With my discharge from the hospital, it meant that my plan was in action and that we would soon receive word from the prison. Stabbing Danny Hernandez would not be the first thing on my list, but my dad was right. We had to do everything we could not to make a mockery out our family. Hurting Danny Hernandez for what his family had done to Anya, wasnât nearly enough-but it was enough for now.
âI still think we shouldâve let Manny kill him. Just injuring him isnât cutting it for me. âVictor shared his unwanted opinion. My dad stood up from his office desk and poured himself a drink. âMarvin made a good suggestion, and I wonât let you question my decision. Youâre not the one in charge here.â He snarled. âI do not like your tone nowadays.â
âSorry, dad.â
I held back my laughter as my dad corrected Victor. Surprisingly enough, my dad and I had slowly restored our bond and were getting closer day by day, which meant Victor did not hold that much importance anymore. âMarvin, I heard youâre going back to your own home.â
âThatâs right.â I nodded. âPanther and mom are preparing my return this very moment.â
Although being with my family felt great, I needed my space, and I hadnât forgotten about Anyaâs key. If it was truly meant for Tiago, I had to know the context of it first. I didnât want him to push his feelings.
Unfortunately, Tiago was not in his right state of mind and had locked himself upstairs while my mom had been taking care of him. I hadnât seen him yet, and I knew I couldnât walk in with more bad news, so 1 had to give him something.I had to do something for Anya.
âDonât be ridiculous. Just stay here.â Mario suggested while Victor lowered his head in defeat. âYou canât take care of yourself, so Iâll hire a nurse and get you the best care so you can get back on your feet-â
âI have Panther. He can help me. Thank you.â
âExcuse me, dad-but I think Marvin might be right.â Victor butted in. âIf anything, I think we need to give Marvin his space.â
Mario went into deep thoughts while I shot Victor a suspicious look. Even though I agreed with his words, I knew this man only suggested this for his own benefit. He didnât want me here because he wouldnât be able to control this household.
My eyes moved to an important message on my phone Unknown: Your flowers have been delivered.
âItâs done.â I took a breath. My dad moved to the edge of his seat, and Victor stepped forward. âItâs doneâ¦. so now we can all move on and focus on the business, I spoke, embarrassed. I didnât want to do any of this because I knew the more I would get into it, the more I would actually enjoy it. All I wanted was to live in peace.
âSee, thatâs where youâre wrong.â My dad picked up his phone from his desk. âThis is not over.
Weâre only getting started.â He stated. âI will inform the others, and Victor-please make sure all the security is in place.â
âYes, dad.â
âAnd you.â My dad turned to me. âPlease inform your useless brother that he can stop crying now.
Itâs time to move on.â
Stop crying?
How could one stop crying after losing the one person he loved the most?
âYes, dad.â I sighed, rolling myself out of the office. There was one thing I would never agree with, and that was the way he treated Tiago. The one thing he needed right now was reassurance and love. I knew I wasnât in any state to give it to him, so I thought at least my dad or even Victor would.
I rolled myself to the elevator and made my way to the top floor. Over the past two weeks, I had often thought about this moment, but there was no word to describe how I felt. Other than embarrassment, I didnât feel anything.
âMarvin, youâre here!â One of the workers spoke. I smiled at the poor woman, thinking about how long she mustâve been guarding Tiagoâs door. âIâm so sorry, maâam.â I apologized.
The woman grabbed my hands and shook her head. âPlease donât, Tiago is family, and weâre all looking out for him.â
At least there was someone with a right mind.
My mom, who had also been involved in Tiagoâs recovery, couldnât be here today. She insisted on preparing my house for my return, and she was a stubborn woman who did things her way. To me, it only felt like another person who I had taken away from Tiago.
âCome on. Iâm sure your brother would like to see you.â The woman opened the door. I used all of my strength to raise myself out of the wheelchair and entered the room. Other than a bed and a desk, there was nothing.
It looked an awful lot like solitary and brought back some memories. I let the door close behind me and slowly turn to Tiago, who was in a fetal position on the bed, rocking himself back and forth.
His breathing was rapid, and his hair and his clothes were wet from sweat. I knew he wasnât doing fine, but no one told me it was to this extent.I was responsible for this. I did this.
âT-tiago?â
Tiago ignored the sound of my voice and looked straight ahead. His eyes were glued to the wall, and he did not have any intentions of communicating with the outside world.
With baby steps, I made my way closer and slowly placed my hand on his shoulder. He gasped and turned around to look at me while I almost gasped in return. His eyes were big, and his cheeks were full of dry tears. My sweet and energetic brother looked as if he didnât have any strength to move on.
âM-mom, where is mom?â Tiago whispered. Seeing him like this was enough for me to know that giving him the key would not help him in any way. He had lost it.
âMom will be back soon. Sheâs-â
âGet away from me!â
Tiago smacked away my hand, causing me to lose my balance, and crawled to the corner of the bed. âItâs you. Itâs you. Itâs you!â He repeated, biting his fingernails.
âTiago, calm down.â
âItâs you.â Tiago breathed. âAnya is dead because of you. This is all your fault.â
For a second, it felt as if my heart had stopped beating. I blamed myself as well, but hearing it from my brotherâs mouth left a different impact. It was my fault, and thatâs why I had no choice but to accept all of his words. I owed it to him.
âYou killed Anya. Youâre a killer.â
