Chapter 268
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
Elena âCome on, just work along for once!â Tori scolded me as she forced her nose underneath my armpits.
I could hardly believe that I was just an hour away from meeting the potential love of my life, Marvin.
It was already surprising that a goody-two-shoes like me was able to look past all the charges so that I could be with him.
What if he would bail on me?
What if this was just one of his stupid jokes?
âYou smell like roses. Letâs keep it that way.â Tori smiled as she placed her hands on my shoulder.
She had stopped by my house to do my makeup because apparently. I sucked at it. Usually, I would complain, but this time I didnât mind it at all.
I wanted to look good for Marvin, and I wanted to show him that I was the exact person from the pictures. âWill you be able to do this on your own tomorrow?â Victoria asked.
I gave her a confident nod. âFor the wedding? Yes, of course.â
The wedding was the least important thing on my mind as all I could think of was Marvin. It was a good thing that my dad and my brother werenât at home today because I was not in the mood for any questions.
What would I even tell them?
Oh, no big deal. Iâm just going out to meet my former criminal crush, but donât you guys worry-he said he was wrongfully convicted.
âCan I see one last picture of him?â Tori almost begged me. âI just want to see if this Marvin is worth the effort.â
I rolled my eyes with a slight smirk on my face and pulled out my phone. Marvin was a catch, and I had no problem showing him off. I showed Tori the picture and watched as she squinted her eyes.
âYes, heâs definitely worth the effort.â She chuckled.
âHe looks familiarâ¦itâs almost as if Iâve seen him before.â
âWell, unless youâve been to prison-I honestly donât think thatâs the case.â I laughed at her crazy comment. Besides that, there werenât any people like him. The only person who even came close was one of our clients, Santiago-and he was getting married.
âAnyway, I really have to go.â Victoria hugged me. âMy dad and I have to visit this guy we have to defend, and you have a date to get to.â
âItâs not a date.â I blushed. âAnd you should go because I have this really bad stress poop, and the house wonât be safe for a couple of hours.â
âGosh.â Victoria pulled a disgusted face. âPlease make sure not to mention any of this stuff to Marvin, and please try to behave moreâ¦human.â
âBut pooping is human!â
âYes, Iâm just going to leave,â Victoria spoke in a hurry. It wasnât long before she left the house while I went to take a dump. I was very serious about my visit to the toilet, and it was necessary. The worst thing I could do was a fart in Marvinâs presence.
After a short drive, I was at the bridge just as he requested. Okay, I wasnât exactly on the bridge, but I had my reasons for that. I wanted to see Marvin first and make sure he wasnât the one who had been cat- fishing me, so I knelt behind a nearby stone and waited for the time to pass.
I felt my heart rise at every person who walked the bridge and could almost jump out of joy after they continued walking. It was a good sign and proof of my hope that Marvin wasnât a catfish.
âCome on, where are you.â I let out a huff and closed my eyes, but everything had changed when I opened them. I noticed a man from a distance and knew immediately that it was the person I had been waiting for.
Marvinâ¦
âUn-fucking-believable!â I slammed my hands in front of my mouth and raised my head a little, so I could take another peek at him, Marvin.
My legs felt numb, and I could not find the power or the courage to walk up to him. He was literally there, and I couldnât do it.
I came here with a clear mind and was so confident to walk up to him, but seeing him in real life was different. He looked just like in the pictures, or no-who was I kidding? He seemed even more handsome than he did in the pictures.
My eyes couldnât look away from his curly dark hair and his sharp jawline. I could only see him from the side, but even then, I couldnât miss his plump lips. He wore a T-shirt, revealing his toned arms and his sleeve tattoo.
This was him, Marvin.
Prison? Forget about that damn prison. I felt terrible for thinking this way because this guy had a long list of serious crimes and was supposed to stay in prison for his entire life-but there was no way in hell I would let someone like this go. He said he was innocent, right?
Well, if that was the case, I was going to marry this man.
First, I had to see if he was willing to marry me, but I was definitely up for it. I laughed at my own enthusiasm and fixed the ruffles of my jumpsuit as I prepared myself to make my way over to him.
Should I just walk up to him?
Call out his name?
Give him a tap on his shoulder?
While I was thinking of different ways to greet him, a man walked up to the bridge and raised his hand at Marvin. I could only see this manâs back but could sense he was most likely his friend. The letter didnât mention anything about a double date?
The man gave Marvin a nudge against his shoulder. âHi, boss!â He greeted him. Was that his nickname, or was Marvin a CEO? Being a CEO despite being locked up in prison was very impressive.
âCome on.â I desperately whispered as I waited for his friend to turn around so I could see whatever he had to offer. I heard Marvin laugh at the man, and my heart nearly melted. I had yet to hear his voice, but I already knew it was going to sound just as I had imagined. Attractive and powerful.
âI thought I told you to keep your distance,â Marvin spoke for the first time. It turned out I was right.
His voice sounded like my monthly paycheck. It sounded like heaven. He had a deep voice, but he somehow. still managed to sound kind and warm.
âNah, I think Iâll pass.â The other man spoke. âI want to see this Lena of yours.â
Lena of yours? Did he claim me as his already?
I let out a cocky chuckle, which was definitely deserved. I was glad we were on the same page about our feelings. I was going to marry this man. My dad and Alex would probably cut me in half once Iâd introduce him to them, but they would have to live with it.
The other man stretched out his arm and was just about to turn around, but before he could, Marvin gave him a push against his back. âAlright, boss, Til leave you alone.â The mysterious man laughed.
He walked off with his back turned to me while I mentally slapped Marvin for denying me the opportunity to see his friend. Marvin took a deep breath and glanced at his watch while I pulled out my phone to look at the time.
It was already over time, but I didnât have it in me to approach him. Things wouldâve been so much better if I was the one to show up first. I mean-how did you even greet someone?
âYo, whatâs up? Iâm the Lena youâve been talking to.
âItâs so good to see you out of prison!â
âHello, so youâre not a catfish after all What should I do?
âJust go out there and greet the guy, Elena,â I spoke some sense into myself. All I had to do was go out there.
I took the perfect opportunity when Marvin turned his back towards me and walked as fast as possible while I tried my hardest not to make a single sound. It was kind of hard to do so with these ridiculously long heels, but I somehow managed to do it..
I made my way forward, and before I knew it, there were only as many as an inch of space between us. I felt like throwing up and still had no idea how to approach him. Should I tap him on his back?
Before I even realized what I was doing. I cleared my throat. For a second, it seemed like the time was standing still as Marvin had slowly turned around and stared right into my eyes with his nerve-
racking gaze.
He was perfect.
