Chapter 264
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
Elena âIâm sorry, my bad.â
I pulled my hoodie over my head and reached down to grab my phone as I was determined to ignore all contact with the person who had bumped into me.
âNo worries,â I whispered as I stormed off and made my way towards the bar. Today was a workday, and the wedding was getting closer, which also meant my meeting with Marvin was slowly getting closer, and I was as nervous as one could be.
âIf you didnât want to work today, you couldâve just said so,â Rona laughed as I walked past her. She followed behind me and removed my hood from my hoodie. âYou know why Iâm nervous,â I spoke.
Besides Victoria, Rona was the only other person aware of the mess I had gotten myself into.
âCome on, calm down,â Rona reassured me. âYou still got some time left, and besides that, itâs not as if youâre going to see the Marvin guy around here or something.â
âTrue.â I breathed. Rona had a point. He wasnât going to be around here. It wasnât even the fact that he was a criminal, but it was more so the fact that I had fallen in love with him. It was difficult to admit, but it was the harsh truth.
âListen up. Iâm about to ruin your day even more. Rona spoke nervously. I waited for her explanation, but she remained silent. âWhat do you mean?â
âUh, well,â Rona began. âThere is this group of men upstairs, and apparently, the cops are on their way to arrest them.â
I was waiting for her to tell me that she was joking, but I could not deny the serious look on her face.
âIâm sorry, what?â
âYes, some guy came in here.â Rona sighed. âI think heâs a special agent or something. By the way, it was actually Santiagoâs brother..â
âSantiago of the wedding?â I frowned while Rona nodded her head enthusiastically. I guess his brother had finally returned from vacation. âYes, him!â
âOkay, but please get to the point.â
âOh, yes-of course.â Rona continued her story. âHe told me to be prepared because the cops are on their way to arrest this asshole who is upstairs.â
I let out a hysterical sigh and closed my eyes in annoyance. It seemed like I just wasnât able to live in peace without a criminal bothering me. âDo you think I attract criminals?â I asked Rona. She went into deep thoughts and shrugged her shoulders. âNo, why?â
âBecause it seems like trouble is following me wherever I go, and Iâm getting sick of it.â
âOh, well.â Rona shrugged me off. âHow is your dad doing? Is he still suspended?â
thought things through, and neither did Alex since he was stupid enough to remain by his side. âYes, he is,â I spoke, embarrassed. âAnd he will be until he can find some proof of the people who are really responsible for his partnerâs death.â
âThat must suck,â Rona spoke. âI know how obsessed your dad is with his job, and I know heâs been doing this for a long time.â
I was not in the mood for a pity talk. Not from Rona and also not from Victoria. âSo how long until he runs out of money to pay his bills?â Rona asked. It was not a silly question as I definitely wondered the same. I was just about to answer her before we got interrupted by the sound of the officers barging in.
I flinched and stepped back while I felt grateful that there werenât that many customers inside. Rona pushed me aside and ran towards the group of men. She pointed her finger upstairs and motioned for me to come her way.
Why me?
âGo, I have it under control here.â One of the employees smiled at me. I was reluctant initially, but I made my way over to Rona and the police, who walked past us, except for one man. âSo ourâ¦
colleague who reported it is not here anymore?â The man spoke to Rona. âThatâs interesting.â
His eyes met mine and turned big before he stuck out his hand. âAgent Torres, daughter?â He spoke, surprised. âI donât think you recognize me, but I work with your dad and your brother?â
Excellent, so as if it couldnât get any worse, the issue was drug-related. I frowned my eyebrow and tried to connect a name to the face. I had been at my dadâs office countless times, but that was years ago when I was still a high school student. âAgent Clover?â I guessed. The man nodded his head. âYes, your dad did mention something about you working at aâ¦barâ
âOh, did he now?â I smiled at him. I didnât want to talk about my dad and especially not with one of his co-workers. If anything, I felt embarrassed that everyone was aware of his suspension. âYes, he did,â Clover replied. âSo, how is he doing?â
There it was. The infamous question to which I could not answer. âUh.â I stammered as I tried to come up with a lie as to why we couldnât discuss my dadâs whereabouts. âWe should probably catch the criminal first.â
âR-right.â Agent Clover agreed. He shot me one last smile and walked past me. âElena, come on, stuff like this is always so exciting!â Rona pulled my arm.
I shared a different opinion, as it didnât exactly interest me. I followed her to the VIP lounge and watched as the officers turned towards one of the guys. He sat on the sofa like he owned the place and stretched out his feet on the table.
âYeah, they should lock him up,â I whispered as my eyes moved towards his entourage, who didnât seem all that different from him. There were quite a lot of officers, meaning this person had to be a severe case. âDanny Hernandez, Clover spoke.
The guy rolled his eyes. âAre you here for me?â
âI am.â Clover nodded. âAnd I think you know why Iâm here.â
The guy had a fearless smirk on his face and looked at the officers. Agent Clover had quickly lost his patience and pulled out his handcuffs. He yanked him from the couch before pushing him down onto the ground.
A few of the girls seated on the sofa yelled and backed away while Agent Clover did the usual youâre under arrestâ speech. Any other person would probably freak out over this, but not me.
It was not the first time that officers had to arrest a troublemaker at this bar. Better yet, it was a weekly thing. It kept me thinking, would the same happen to Marvin if I happened to go on a date with him? Would he also be that problematic?
âI havenât done anything!â Danny kept yelling while they led him down the stairs, with his entourage following closely behind. âCall my mom!â He called out to one of the guys.
Rona and I gave each other a look before we burst out laughing. âIsnât it cute how they always end up calling out for their mom?â Rona pouted as we followed them down the stairs.
âI donât know. I kind of feel bad for him.â I admitted. He seemed terrified, and whatever he mustâve done couldâve not been that bad, right?
Rona and I walked back to the bar and watched as the officers escorted Danny and his entourage out of the bar. âSo you said Santiagoâs brother has returned and is some sort of special agent?â
âNo, I never said that.â Rona shook her head. âI said he looks like one, and Iâm not going to lie, he looks fine.â
âOh, he does?â I frowned at my eyebrows. âWho is hotter, Santiago or his brother-
âHis brother, hands down,â Rona confirmed. laughed at her immediate reaction and tried to imagine someone even more handsome than Santiago. He had this cute and innocent charm and seemed different from most men.
âHis brother has such a recognizable face, so I asked if weâd met before, and he told me that heâs related to Santiago.â
âSmall world.â
âIndeed, but enough about the hot brother,â Rona sighed. âHow are things coming along? How are the cocktails?â
âGood,â I shrugged. Believe it or not, despite everything which had been going on in my life, I somehow found the energy to finish the menu for the wedding. âSo, what are we going to wear?â
I looked at Rona and waited for her answer. I had never been to a wedding before and felt grateful enough that Santiago and Anya had decided to invite us to the ceremony. âI donât even know if we have enough money to fit the dress code.â Rona snickered.
She was right. We probably didnât-but I had to throw everything onto my Snapchat story, including this wedding, to make people believe that my life was at least a bit interesting. âOh, come on, Iâm sure you have a dress in your closet.â
âHmm, maybe.â Rona hummed. Unlike me, she did not like attention and would rather work behind the bar all day. Not on my watch.
âSo, how do you feel about your meeting with mister inmate?â
âI forgot all about it until you mentioned it,â I spoke sarcastically. The truth was that I just wanted to get it over with. I knew I was crazy for falling for someone who I hadnât even met, not to forget-
someone who had committed serious crimes, but I had to meet him.
âIâm scared.â
âHow come?â Rona placed her hand behind my back. âBecauseâ¦â I sighed. âCall me crazy, call me insane or whatever you want to call me-but I feel like I found my soulmate.â
It was a bold statement, but after re-reading my messages with Marvin, I had quickly realized that it was the correct statement. I felt comfortable around him, and we had something special. Anyone who wouldâve read the messages could see that.
âAww. Rona patted my back. I knew she didnât believe in that kind of stuff and probably thought I had hit my head against some concrete. âThatâs cuteâ¦I think.â
âRona, I know you think this is ridiculous-â
âNo, I donât.â Rona smiled. âIf you like the guy, you like the guy.â She shared her opinion.
âSo you think it might work out between us?â
âI mean, as long as he doesnât kidnap you, pulls you into some van, turn out to be a pimp or whateverâ¦then yes.â
âIt might work out.â
