Chapter 243
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
âAll of that because I didnât have his back?â I whispered to myself. Johnny rushed to Lucaâs sideâ
while Enzo slammed his arm around my shoulder.
âDonât take it personally. Heâs always been like thatâwhining like a little child.â
âYes, I know.â I folded my arms. âBut leaving me behind?â
âWith me.â Enzo shrugged. âThat means he trusts meâdoesnât it?â
âHeâs not angry with you. Heâs upset because you looked at him with those puppy eyes.â Dario stepped forward, smirking.
âWhat puppy eyes?â I pouted. âAll I told him was not to murder his cousin, and now suddenly Iâm the bad guy?â
Dario tapped his finger against my nose. âThose puppy eyes.â He showed me his dimples, making me blush. âDonât worry about him too much, and just let him calm down.â
I didnât love Dario the way I loved Christian. I had already ruled that one out, but having someone to talk to who shared the same interests and knowing he was back to his old self melted my heart.
He deserved happiness.
âSo what will happen to uncle Berto?â Enzoâs look was full of curiosity. Both Johnny and Luca gave Dario their full attention.
âWhen all of you are out of hereâIâll burn him alive.â He spoke nonchalantly. âDonât worry, Iâll show Christian his headâso he knows Iâm not trying to screw him over.â
âSounds fair.â Enzo agreed. Hearing them talk that casually made me want to throw up, but I was trying to keep myself together. I wasnât cut out for this. Not at all.
âThen weâll get out of your hair after Luca apologizes to Serena.â Johnny slammed his fist against his brotherâs back. âCome on, go on!â
Luca, too afraid to meet my eyes, stepped closer and slowly raised his head. We made eye contact without either of us saying a word, and to be honestâI didnât need his apology.
All I needed was for him to get back to his healthy self. I wanted him to relax and take a break from this crazy family.
Johnny mightâve dodged the curse, but Luca was a perfect result of bad upbringing. If someone should take the blameâit would have to be the Alfonzos for neglecting him.
âI can make many excuses for my actions, but Iâm not going to do that,â Luca spoke just above a whisper. âI donât think youâre waiting for my apologyâ¦but Iâm sorry for everythingââ
âI know.â I interrupted him, not wanting to hear any more. âLetâs not make it any more difficult.â
âThank you.â Johnny almost held his brother in a chokehold as if he was afraid he could run out any second.
âJust take him to my place while I take care of Serena, and donât try anything funny,â Enzo ordered.
âIf he tries something, weâll all die.â
âDonât worry. He wonât get anywhere.â Johnny looked determined. âIâll make sure of that.â
âSo then weâre all set to go?â
âYes!â I opened my mouth, happy to get out of this place. âAnd good luck Dario. Youâll need it.â
Any person who could burn someone alive, even if that person was the absolute worstâneeded it.
âYes, you too.â Dario winked. âWith the baby, whoâll probably throw a tantrum back home.â
âSiena?â
âNo, Christian.â
â
It had been hours since I arrived home, and I had yet to face Christian.
I knew he was in his office because he had come down a few times to check up on Sienaâbut he was set on ignoring me.
I shouldâve never interfered in the first place, and I mightâve been wrong, but that did not remove the fact that I had saved a life today, and given a chance, I wouldâve done it again.
My only worries were Christian thinking I was taking advantage of his weakness, and that was not it.
Even if he had ended up killing Luca, I would respect his decision.
Unable to take it any longer, I made him something to drink and knocked on the office door.
I had done the exact thing in the beginning, right after the terrible dinner Cesca had organized, and it helped us back thenâso why not now?
âChristian?â I called out his name but got no answer in return.
It took me a moment to get it through my headâbut this was also my house which was why I opened the door as I was allowed to and stomped to his desk.
âIâd appreciate it if youâd answer me like a normal human being.â I put down the cup on the table with an attitude and sat down on his desk, closing his laptop. âI made you tea.â
âI was watching a movie.â
âAnd I said I made you tea.â
Christian rested his chin on his hand, eyeing me suspiciously. âIs it poisoned?â
Poisoned?
âN-no!â I spoke, offended. How dared he?
âWhy would I poison you?â
âI donât know, Serena. Why would you?â Christian sighed, raising his eyebrows. I did the same and leaned in closer to stare directly at him.
He wouldnât back down, eventually I raised the cup and brought it to my lips to take a sip. âHappy?â
A small smile appeared on Christianâs lips, but it was didnât last long. He took the cup from my hands with a poker face and drank the tea, looking repulsed.
âIs it bad?â I stressed when he started coughing, but he shook his head and drank everything in one go.
âNo, noâitâs delicious, hmm!â He didnât want to hurt my feelings. âBest tea I ever had!â Christian spoke. âVery sweet andâ¦sugary.â
Great. So I could add that to the list of things I couldnât do.
âThanks for your sincerity,â I said sarcastically.
âNo thanks.â I got in return. âBut I thought I said I didnât want to see you today.â
So we were still going?
âDo you want me to take Siena and sleep at my parents?â I questioned his rudeness. âBecause I can do that.â
âNo!â He nearly shouted, sticking out his hand to grab my arm. âYouâre already here, so you might as well stay.â I could tell he enjoyed my presence which made teasing him that much more enjoyable.
Teasing him was fun, but that was not the reason why I had barged into his office.
âChristian, Iâm so so sorry.â I gave him the apology he deserved. âI felt bad for Luca, and instead of trying to convince you some other way, I called your brother, and all of us ganged up on you.â
Christian chortled, closing his eyes, and leaned back in his chair. âKeep talking.â
He was really enjoying thisâwasnât he?
âI told you I wouldnât interfere anymoreâbut I did, and I was wrong.â I continued. âI donât regret my decision, but the next time I disagree, Iâll talk to you about it.â I made a promise. âI donât want you to ignore meâ¦I love you.â
Christian opened his eyes with a deep breath and brushed my hand with his finger. âDid you eat anything?â
âSpareribs and pizzaââ
âNo, Angelica.â He tilted his head, mocking my birth name. âIâm talking about real food. A proper meal.â
âNo, I havenâtâthe babyâs been making me nauseous, and Iâm not that hungry.â
âBut itâs important for the baby,â Christian spoke worried, raising himself from the chair. He grabbed me by my waist and lifted me from the desk. âCome, Iâll make you something.â
I was forced to follow him as he held my hand and pulled me through the halls. Even though he treated me like a doll, I didnât mind and followed after him with a stupid smile on my lips. At least we werenât ignoring each other anymore.
âDo you know what happened to Berto?â I just had to ask him that question. Dario couldâve not been seriousâright?
âYesâDario, send me a picture. Do you want to see it?â Christian answered my question. âI do have to warn youâyou might not be able to sleep.â
Change of mind. It turns out he was serious after all.
âNo, noâew!â I cringed, making Christian fill the halls with his laughter. âIâll trust you on your word.â
âGood.â
âWait!â I squeezed his hand, stopping him. âDoes this mean youâre not angry anymore?â
âAngry?â Christian cornered me, a relaxed smile crossing his face. âI was not angry, just a bit disappointed.â
He trailed his finger across my cheek and leaned closer to press his lips on my forehead. âI canât stay mad at you. You know that.â
âBut you never said it back,â I spoke dramatically, squishing his face with my hands. âI donât believe you.â
âI love you too.â Christian rushed through his words, desperate to get out of my grip. I released him with a satisfied grin and wrapped my arms around his body, leaning my head against his chest.
âI love you more.â
âYouâre like a baby,â Christian let out a chuckle. âSpeaking of babiesâwhat about those fifteen you promised me?â
I did. I also said a bunch of lies about becoming a perfect housewife.
âNo,â I spoke, terrified with the idea of having to carry fifteen babies. âOver my dead body.â He possibly couldnât have thought I was being serious.
âBut never say never.â I didnât completely want to ruin his day. âWho knows what the future holds?â
