Chapter 240
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
Christian âFather, motherâwhat a pleasant surprise!â Berto said as the two followed his eyes.
In the doorway stood the person he despised the most.
Franco Lamberti.
Just as Dario and Christian were about to step closer, Franco stuck out his hand, ordering them to stop.
A shocked Maria made her way to the front to take a better look at her son. âRobertoâ¦â She had difficulty speaking. âWhat happened to you?â
Christian did not know his grandma as an emotional woman, and as far as he knew, she had bottled up her feelings and had never expressed her loss.
Franco and Maria being on good terms after everything that happened proved for Christian that his grandpa had already confessed his sins to Maria. The two were probably in in together.
He left Berto behind, and Christian could understand why he did that. His uncle was insane.
His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a hard smack. Shocked, Christian ran over to his grandma, holding her cheek, and pulled her backward, realizing the situation.
Berto hit her.
Before anyone could properly process what had happened, Franco pulled off his rings and repeatedly connected his fist with Bertoâs jaw. âYou sick fuck. Iâll personally make sure youâll die today!â He growled, but his son was still unamused, carrying the same cocky smirk across his face.
âYou made me this sick. You did this to me!â He lost his temper. âI saved Lucio from that fire, but you left me to burn knowing I was alive!â
âAnd till this day, itâs one of the best decisions Iâve ever made in my life!â Franco yelled back.
âThat wife of yours was a nuisance. Look at what sheâs done to you!â
Worried about the amount of hatred his grandpa expressed towards Darioâs mom, Christian glanced at his cousin who was slowly twisting the ring around his finger. His motherâs ring.
Whatever resentment his grandpa might be feeling against Darioâs mom, Christian did not believe it was the right time or place to discuss it.
âI heard she passed away.â Franco raised his head, scoffing. âGood for her.â
âAre we done, grandpa?â Dario shifted awkwardly, quietly giving Franco a message he did not understand.
âNot quite.â A figure appeared from the dark as the room was filled with the sound of wheels. The mysterious figure rolled his wheelchair to expose himself.
âDad?â Christian recognized the man.
He clenched his jaw, thinking about how he was the only one surprised and sensed this mustâve been another one of Darioâs surprises.
Rather than angry, he felt betrayed and couldnât understand how they could even give this ill and weak man a harder time than he already had.
âB-brother.â Berto stuttered. With tight fists, he sat up straight and blinked his eyes. âIs that really you, Lucio?â
Lucio answered with a nod and moved his wheelchair to his brother while Christian stood on the stand-by to jump in whenever necessary. One punch to Lucioâs face would be enough reason for Christian to choke his uncle to death.
Surprisingly, Berto had not shown any sign of aggression and carefully reached for his brotherâs face, forgetting about the chains. âItâs really you.â His voice cracked. âIâm finally seeing you from up close after all these years.â
Lucio chuckled. âYouâve made quite the mess, didnât you?â
âIâm sorry,â Berto mumbled. âJust kill me, please.â A tear left his eye.
Dario balled his fist. âIs this a damn joke to him?â He spoke the words Christian had been thinking all along. âHeâs a grown man.â
âWhy did you hurt mother?â Lucio asked calmly, resting his hand on his brotherâs cheek.
âMother?â Berto widened his eyes. âI hurt mother? Iâm so sorry.â
Christian rolled his eyes, making sure not to buy his uncleâs sad act.
Maria gave it another go and knelt to see her son, her hand suddenly grasping his. âI know you are.â
She caressed his scared face. âI know youâre sorry.â
Just like Christian and Dario, Franco stayed behindânot wanting to take any part in this.
âIâm so sorry little brother,â Berto said. âPlease take me out of this misery so I canât hurt anyone else âplease.â
Dario snickered. âOh, donât you worry about that.â
âCome on, letâs give them a moment.â Franco prevented Dario from destroying his wifeâs happiness and pulled his two grandsons to the side. âYou should at least let them say goodbye.â
âYes, I know.â Dario snarled. âThatâs why Iâve informed and invited all aunts and uncles so that they can give that man a proper goodbyeââ
âYou what?â Christian asked, shaking his head afterward. He slowly realized there was more important stuff than wondering why Dario had run off and planned things on his own. These were the consequences of his nap.
âDo you think all of that is real?â Christian beckoned to Berto, wanting to know the question which really mattered.
âBerto is not well.â Franco breathed. âMentally unstableâso who knows?â
âDonât get me wrong, he should pay for what he did to my uncle, and Iâll make him pay.â Dario began. âBut would it really be alright to kill a mentally unstable man?â He wondered, making Christian laugh out loud.
Serena had always called him out for not having the right to decide over othersâ lives, but that was something he had agreed to disagree with.
Keeping someone like Berto and Luca alive would only cause more harm to the family.
Franco cracked his knuckles, chuckling at his question. âDo what you must do, then ask God for forgiveness.â He said. âBut I do not want to see this beast alive.â
Act first, regret later.
That was the reason why the Lambertis were where they were at today.
âGood, so that means I donât have to feel bad when I blow him up the same way he blew up my uncle,â Dario murmured before walking off, leaving the two alone.
Being alone with Franco left an uncomfortable taste in Christianâs mouth. Business remained business, but he could not forget his words about Serena.
âWhat about Luca?â Christian asked, not meeting Francoâs eyes. âHeâs your grandson. Do you give me your permission to deal with him?â
âSure.â Franco nodded, pursing his lips. âHe has to face the consequences for his actions.â
âAnd Johnnyââ
âI spoke with his mother. She knows what needs to happen.â Franco shushed Christian. âIt hurts to think this way about my grandson, but I do not wish to create a mini Berto.â
âWill she be here too?â
âNo, of course not.â Franco frowned. âI highly doubt sheâll want to see her ex-husband and son in a cage.â
âOf course.â
The conversation was cut short by Christianâs aunts and uncles, who had all entered the room.
Christian, who had never been the biggest fan of family reunions, saw that as his cue to leave.
Before he could take a step, Franco held his wrist tightly. âChristian?â
âYes.â
âLetâs not be like this?â
âBe like what?â
Franco cleared his throat. âI was wrong, and I owe you an apology.â He said. âI was wrong about Serena, so please stay and protect your family.â
Christian was at a loss for words, already having decided to take his distance to focus on his family and leave the business to Dario.
âThere will never be someone who loves you more than she does, and there will never be anyone half as good at leading the family as you do.â
âTell that to Matteo Alfonzoâ went to Christianâs mind.
His dream was for Siena to do her best in school, study hard and take over the hotel he had built for her. He wanted his daughter and his unborn child to have a clean start without having to look over their shoulders every single day.
âHave you thought about what it is that I want?â He expressed his concerns. âHave any of you ever thought about my feelings?â
Franco gulped, knowing he had a point. âWhat do you want?â
âI want to take Serena, Sienaâand just go.â Christian sighed, confessing. âI just want to get away from here.â
The thought of losing Serena made his head spin, and he did not want to worry about that ever again. âHow many Fabios and Bertos do I have to experience until I really lose her one day?â
Christian demanded an answer. âCall Serena stupid all you want, but she walked away because she panickedâand thatâs on us.â
âI know, and I told you Iâm sorry.â Franco widened his eyes, not expecting him to make such a big deal.
Threatening the heir to remove them from their position had always been a thing, but he hadnât expected Christian to really go through with it.
âHave you discussed it with Dario? Your brothers?â He asked, baffled. âSerena?â
âOh, donât pretend like you care about her now.â Christian gave Franco a look, daring him to mention her again.
Franco swallowed his breath. âI know things are hard on you, and I know I shouldnât have told you to choose, but please donât bail on everyone.â He pushed his shoulder. âYouâre surely not thinking about letting your old grandpa get out of retirement, right?â
âBut you have Dario.â
âHeâs just been here for a few months.â
âFair point.â Christian shrugged. The two had grown close. He trusted him with his lifeâbut it was still too soon to decide whether he would be a good leader or not.
Franco rubbed the back of his neck. âI know you told me not to mention her, but have you considered Serenaâs feelings? Because this is not the Christian show.â He said. âJust saying.â
Christianâs thoughts went to the Alfonzoâs. Despite all the crap they had been through, Serena had finally found her real family, and he did not want to take that away from her.
Truthfully, he hadnât even thought about her opinion. He just wanted to keep his family safe.
âI canât promise anything about staying, but Iâll discuss it with her.â Christian exhaled, looking up. âI guess I should ask for her opinion.â
âGood.â
âAnd since all of you supposedly got everything under control.â Christian looked around the room.
âIâll head back home to be my with daughter.â
âGood.â
âAnd I need a ride.â Christian scratched his head. âBeau dropped me off like garbage and went off to do his own things.â
âOf course he did. Itâs an Alfonzo.â
âGrandpaââ
âSorry!â
~
Upon arriving home, Christian followed the sweet and loud sound of Serenaâs laughter and ended up in the cinema room.
âAnd then he pulled me off, but donât worryâI got her good.â Serena cackled, throwing back her head as Vince laughed along. âItâs on camera, and I believe UFC should give me a contract.â
A flush appeared on Christianâs cheeks as he realized the topic of discussion. All in all, seeing the two interact was a delight to his eyes.
Serena, who was not that good with people, seemed at ease with his long-time friend, and that was all he could ask for.
Christian knocked before revealing himself as Serena turned her head with a squeal. âWhy canât you just walk in like a normal person!â She spoke over-dramatically, clutching her heart.
Vince beamed at her cute response and moved seats, allowing Christian to sit in the middle. The most typical thing would be to ask if she was okay, but he didnât. He could see she was doing perfectly fine and didnât feel the need to open any wounds.
âWhere is your brother?â
âYouâve just missed him.â Serena smiled, explaining. âSiena is asleep, and little Christian is making me nauseous.â She pointed to her stomach.
âLittle Christian?â Christian looked into her eyes, resting his hands on her belly.
âDonât you want a son?â Serena smiled teasingly, tilting her head. Christian found himself lost in her eyes, unable to do anything. Being away from her felt like torture, and all he wanted to do was kiss her, feel her, touch her.
The only thing holding him back was his friendâs presence.
âI donât have any preferences.â Christian shared, turning to Vince to include him. âI just want a healthy baby, and I wouldnât mind having more daughters.â
âHow about you, Vince?â Serena leaned forward, searching for his eyes. âDonât you want any children? It would be cool for our children to grow up together, just like you and Christian.â
âNot anytime soon,â Vince spoke, traumatized, shaking his head. âIâll just be Sienaâs uncle for now.â
He made the two laugh.
Christian slammed his arm around Serenaâs shoulder and moved his mouth to her ear. âKnowing Vince, he might already have a kid running around somewhere.â He whispered. âJust a few years from now, and boom! Baby at the doorstep. Mark my words.â
âSays the guy who got Serena pregnant after knowing her after how long?â Vince pulled Christianâs ear, calling him out.
Serena got up, removing herself from the situation. âIâll get us some more snacks!â She excused herself.
âNot homemade, I hope?â Christian sulked, earning a smack from Vince.
âCome on, donât be like that.â He spoke after Serena had left the room. âYouâre hurting her feelings.â
Christian smiled, thinking how nice it was to have someone look out for Serena. He could admit that his jokes werenât always the nicest, and he had a habit of unintentionally hurting her feelings.
âI donât want to stick my nose in your business,â Vince told him. âBut what happened today?â
âYou helped me safe, Serena, so itâs your right to ask.â Christian slapped Vinceâs back before giving him the story he had asked for, making sure not to leave out any details.
âSounds rough,â Vince responded. âBut at the same time, it feels good to know Iâm not the only one with family issues.â
âI guess so,â Christian responded. âAnd thatâs why I think you should join us tomorrow.â He made his uncleâs and cousinâs execution seem like a show.
âIâll think about it,â Vince said. âYou know, my uncle just came back to town. Heâs a real pain in the ass.â
âWorse than Berto?â Christian poked fun at him. âWorse than your dad?â
âNo, not that bad,â Vince said. âNow that Iâm awake, heâs âpromisedâ toâ¦safe the family and wants to bring back the Garcias.â
âThatâs a good thing, isnât it?â
âWhatâs a good thing?â Serena walked in with a platter full of drinks and snacks.
Initially, Christian believed Serenaâs curiosity was one of her bad traits, but nowadays, he could laugh about it. âItâs a good thing that weâre staying in town to raise our children and be with our families.â He grabbed her hand, leading her back to her chair.
He had yet to discuss his plans with her, so he might as well do it now.
âWere we planning on going somewhere?â Serena asked, her eyebrows furrowing as she tried to understand what was happening.
Christian squinted his eyes. âDonât you want to?â
âI really donât care. Iâll follow you anywhere.â
âWhat about your family?â Vince joined the conversation. âWhat about me?â He rubbed his eyes, yawning as if leaving wasnât even an option.
âOh, right.â Serena opened her mouth, surprised.
âWait, are we really leaving?â She nudged Christianâs elbow.
A sigh escaped his lips, accepting the answer he had been fishing for. Serena was willing to follow him anywhere, but she didnât want to leave. He could see it in her eyes.
After everything she had been through, she didnât want to leave. This was their home, where they shared both good and bad memories.
As to leaving the family business, his elders work so hard for? Not an option.
âNo.â Christian played it off. âThe thought of leaving hadnât even crossed my mind.â
