Chapter 237
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
Luca cleared his throat, grabbing everyoneâs attention. âDad, I thought we said no guns.â He let out nervous laughter.
âFor them, not for me.â By the sound of Bertoâs voice, I could tell that this would probably not end well.
âChristian, youâre rightâthis place is usually heavily protected, but since dad wished to have aâ¦
peaceful dinnerâeveryone left,â Luca told him. âFor now.â
I tried reading the sketchy expression on his face. Christian, who had stopped asking questions, seemed relaxed after hearing Lucaâs words.
Instead of cracking my brains and coming up with reasons why Berto was stupid enough to get rid of all the guards and maids, I accepted that he was the only armed person in the room.
âChrissie, have you thought about my offer?â Berto turned his attention onto me. âI told him Iâd trade your life for his.â He spoke as if it was the most normal thing in the world.
I didnât know which part was scarier. Berto planning to get rid of me all along or Christianâs words.
âYou can keep her.â He said. âSheâs of no use to me. Keep her.â
I knew I had brought it upon myself, but come on? Giving me away, just like thatâwas unlike Christian.
He probably had some stupid plan to get me out of here. I mean, he had to.
âI donât believe you.â Berto wasnât fooled either, but Christian didnât back down. âWhere is all that talk about her being the love of your life?â
âI would rather let the love of my life die before handing you the business.â I could hear the insincere tone in his voice.
Berto brushed his hand against the gun on the table. âSee, I know thatâs not true.â He said. âI know youâll try to do something stupid, but you really shouldnât.â
He tapped the gun with his finger while Christian didnât utter a word.
âGod Luca, heâs worse than Johnny and that useless mom of yours,â Berto murmured, bad-
mouthing Johnny. It was the first time he had mentioned him, but the hatred on his face was almost terrifying.
After all, Johnny was the only one mature enough not to fall for his dadâs tricks. No, I hadnât forgotten about him trying to sacrifice my siblings, but he was a good person with a mind of his own.
âSo, what will happen to Serena?â Christian spoke just above a whisper. He played with his fork as he slowly raised his head.
That was a good question.
What would happen to me?
âThatâs none of your concerns anymore,â Berto answered. âShe will work for me.â
âWork how.â
âI donât know yet. Maybe after I get rid of that thing inside of herâIâll let her make use of that nice pole in the basement.â He grinned. âI heard sheâs quite a natural.â
My baby.
Threatened, I pushed back my chair and wrapped my arms around my stomach. He could kill me if thatâs what he wanted, but not my baby.
âWill you really leave us alone if I give you Serena?â A confused smile appeared on Christianâs lips.
âDo you really think you can do thatââ
âYes.â Berto frowned for a second. âIf your mental state is the thing that makes this family crumble, so be it.â
âSee, thatâs the thing.â Christian huffed. âYouâve already messed me up so bad that I might as well take my chances and deal with this situation while I still can.â
âAnd how are you going to do that.â Berto reached for his gun before pointing the weapon at Christian. I took a breath, praying Christian wouldnât do any stupid. Yes, I wanted to leaveâbut what would be the point if we both end up dying here?
âSo now that I gave you an answer concerning Serenaâs futureâI think itâs time for you to go.
Dinner is over.â
Christian raised himself from the chair with the fork still in his hand. âI think youâre right, uncle.â He spoke, looking at me for a second. âIt is time to leave, but you were right. Iâm not leaving without Serena.â
âOh, is that so?â Berto spoke mockingly as Christian fixed his clothes.
âYes, so we can do this the easy way or the hard way.â
âChrissie, there is no easy way.â
âThen weâll have to do it the hard way.â
Not having the time to get his words through my head, Christian lunged the for to Bertoâs left eye as a monstrous shriek left his uncleâs mouth.
Suddenly all lights went dark, and the room was filled with gunshots. The only thing I could see was Luca running away and Vince going after him before my brother pushed me onto the floor. He dragged me under the table and wrapped his hands around me while I closed my eyes and ears.
At that moment, I didnât care for anything else but Christian. All I could think about was him.
How could he possibly protect himself against this armed man?
The bullets kept flying through the room as I tried to release myself from Beauâs grip. âLet me go!â I repeated. I felt hopeless and wouldnât be able to help, but all I wanted was to be with Christian. It shouldnât end like this.
It just kept going and going until it had suddenly stopped. I crawled from under the table, trying to get awayâbut my brother stopped me by pulling my hand. âAre you okay? Are you hurt?â He shook my shoulders. âSerena, are you okayââ
âIâm fine, Iâm fine!â I shrugged him off, forcing myself from the floor. I felt an uncomfortable feeling in my chest as my eyes searched for Christian.
âC-Christian?â
âIâm okay.â
I turned as fast as possible and looked at Christianâs back as he pointed his uncleâs gun to a powerlessâ Bertoâs head. The sight of the fork in his eye was not that pretty.
His uncle, who always had a lot to say, was suddenly not that mouthy anymore. Disgusted at the sight of the fork in his eyeâI covered my mouth to stop myself from puking.
I felt my body go weak and lost balance, but before I could hit the floor, I held onto my brother.
âSerena, are you okay?â Christian asked. I nodded. âYes, continue what you were doing.â
âWhereâs Vince?â
âIâm here.â Vince entered the room, dragging Luca by his collar. âLook who tried to get away.â He chuckled, still sounding as bright as ever.
Luca shook his head. âC-C-Christian, y-you canât do this!â He stuttered. âI saved Serena. I saved all of you!â
Small chuckles escaped from Bertoâs lips. âThen youâre a bigger idiot than your brothers.â He sighed. âI shouldâve known.â
Christianâs eyes grew dark. âTake him away. Iâll deal with him later.â
âGot it.â
Vince carried a whining Luca out of the room, but even that didnât stop Bertoâs laughter. Not the fork in his eye, not his son being carried awayânothing.
âIf I die, you will all die.â He said. âDo you really think I donât have enough people to fight against you?â
âSo be it,â Dario spoke. âI donât care if I have to fight the entire universeâbut you will die.â He stated. âBut donât worry, I wonât kill you yet. I will eventually, but it will be a long and painful death.â
Dario turned to look at us, his eyes full of darkness. The kind and polite man I had once known was not the same person anymore, and after everything he had been throughâI couldnât blame him. âI think you should all leave now. Dad and I still have a lot of unfinished business.â
Christian, who did not seem to go against Darioâs words, stepped back, nodding.
âSo this is it, isnât it?â Berto groaned, still in pain, but Christian didnât give him any attendance.
âChrissieâdo you really think it will end here?â
Christian stopped in his steps as Dario let out a sigh of frustration. âShould I just kill you right now?â
He spoke so calmly, rolling his neck.
âThis thing with my sonsâ¦â Berto continued. âIt will never stopâjust like their dad. They will always be after power.â He spoke. âDo you know why? Because you donât belong there, and youâve taken something which isnât yours. It will never stop, I meanâlook!â He exclaimed. âDario has my motherâs genesâitâs in his DNA!â
âDonât listen to him. Heâs trying to get inside your headââ Dario spoke until he was stopped by Christianâs hand, ordering him to shut up.
âNo, I want to hear what he has to say.â
âDario, Luca, Johnnyâ¦if you want to kill me for taking back whatâs mine, you should kill all of them.â
Berto said. âWeâre not that different.â
âNot that different?â Christian chuckled. âIâm done listening, uncle.â He walked over to my side and grabbed my hand. His grip was so tight that I couldnât escape it, even if I wanted to. âCome on, letâs get you out of here.â
âChristian!â
Berto used every bit of strength to call out his name until we had finally left the uninviting and gloomy mansion.
Once outside, I couldnât control my feelings and slammed my arms over Christianâs neck as uncontrollable sobs left my body. âIâm so sorry!â I apologized.
âWhy are you being like this?â Christian pulled me back, resting his hands on my shoulder. âIâm fine.
Youâre fine, and so is Siena.â He smiled softly, moving his hand to my eyes to wipe away my tears.
âPlease donât cry?â
âD-donât cry?â I breathed through my sobs. âYou should want to kill me for what Iâve done to you.â
Not only to him but also to my daughter. What was I even thinking, leaving her alone without her mom? What was going through my head when I made a decision like that?
Christian pouted slightly and patted my head. âPlease stop crying.â He felt uncomfortable after hearing my words. Maybe he agreed, perhaps he didnâtâbut one thing was sure. He did not want to talk about it.
âHey, if thereâs one person I should kill, it should be your brother for saying I shouldnât be with you.
Isnât that right, Beau?â He had somehow managed to make me smile.
âBeau?â Christian looked back, waiting for my brotherâs response, but that response did not come as all my brother could point to was my head. âY-youâre bleedingâ¦Serena, are you sure youâre okay?â
âHmm?â I nodded, bringing my hand to the back of my head, but this time I could not think properly as a burning sensation entered my body.
I felt my head spin as my legs grew weaker, and reached for Christianâs waist for support. âI-Iâm f-
fine!â I managed to get out before falling to the cold ground.
Just like that, everything went black.
