Chapter 232
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
Christian âHow could I have let this happen.â
Those were the only thoughts going through Christianâs mind. He held Siena in his arms and pushed her against him.
âIâll get her back, Sienaâ¦I promise.â
Nothing couldâve prepared him for his missing good morning kiss or the letter Serena left him behind. Christian couldnât help but blame himself for failing to detect Serenaâs odd behavior. Was that why she told me about the pregnancy?
An uneasy Siena who could feel the missing presence of her mommy released a few whines, threatening to spill tears. âI know. I feel the same.â Christian kissed her head.
He had promised himself to get her back today, no matter what. Canceling his original plan to attack his uncle and turning his back on the families was not what he wanted, but Serenaâs safety was a priority.
Other than the people who had the right to know, Christian hadnât shared the news of Serenaâs disappearance, and even Lucio was unaware. He didnât want any judgment or backlash for failing to protect her.
âThe Alfonzoâs will be here soon. Do you want me to take her?â Cesca entered the room. Christian turned his back.
âNo.â He snarled. âLet me hold my daughter.â
âChristianâ¦â
As much as Christian wanted to hate the guard and had even pushed a gun to his head, he couldnât do anything. Wrapping people around her finger was one of Serenaâs specialties, and anyone couldâve fallen for it.
âHow can she be this stupid?â Christian shook his head. At times he couldnât understand Serenaâs thoughts. âSheâs either smart or stupid. Thereâs no in-between.â
âI just donât understand why she would do something like this.â He spoke, remembering his uncle.
Christian was aware that his uncle was not in his right mind.
What if he would hurt her?
What if he would hurt the baby?
âI wonât force her to be me with me if she doesnât want to, but does she not care about Siena?â
Or the baby?
No matter what, Christian couldnât understand why Serena couldnât trust him enough. Only If she had told him his changed behavior wasnât enough, he wouldâve sunk to his knees to apologize.
âLook at you, having to deal with all of this while your dad is on the verge of dying.â Cesca folded her arms. âI hate to say I told you soâ¦but grandpa and I told you sheâs not good for youââ
âNot now, aunt Cesca.â Johnny made his presence known. He had been eavesdropping on the conversation for a while, but he couldnât take it any longer.
âIf youâre only here to tell him how the woman who makes your son happy isnât good enough, you can take your crap and leave.â He said. âHe doesnât need your negativity, not today.â
âYou rude littleâ¦â Cesca gasped, stomping out of the room.
âWhat aunt Cesca means to say is that Serena loves Siena, and she loves you. Thatâs why she felt like she had to do this.â
âIâve never asked her to do this!â
âWe knowâ¦â
While Dario, Marc, his brothers, and his grandpa took it upon themselves to confirm Bertoâs location, Johnny had remained at the mansion to show his support. Christian could see the guilt wash over him but knew not to blame his cousin. After all, he didnât choose his dad and his brother.
âThank you.â
Johnny nodded, placing his hand on Christianâs shoulder. âWeâll get her back todayââ
âYes.â Christian cut him off. âIâll get her back today, Iâm not worrying about that.â
A tense silence was interrupted by the Alfonzoâs, who barged through the door. It was Matteo Alfonzo, with his three sonsâMarcello, Emilio, and Beauâand they did not look happy.
Without a single thought, Christian handed over his daughter to Johnny to face his future father-in-
law and his furious sons. âYou!â Beau lunged at him before punching his jaw. âYou did this to my sister!â
Just as he was about to give him another punch, Christian held his arm to stop him.
On a regular day, Christian wouldâve not hesitated to beat his friend to the pulp, but he could not blame him for his reaction. Serena was his twin, and the two had a strong connection.
âYou can hate me all you want, but right now, I need you to keep it together.â Christian watched as Beauâs eyes softened. âIâll bring back your sisterâI promise.â
âHeâs right, Beau.â Matteo agreed, stepping forward. âSerena is Serena, your sister makes reckless decisions, and this could not have been prevented.â
âSo what?â Beau spoke, startled. âWeâre all just going to put the blame on her?â
âThatâs not what your dad is saying, butââ
âI donât care.â Marcello opened his mouth. Christian was shocked to hear Serenaâs older brother, who would usually keep himself in the background. âI donât care, I only know one thingâand thatâs that youâll bring me back my sister today, and after that, weâll take her back home where she belongs.
Christian chuckled. âSheâs not your property.â He spoke, confused. âYes, I let her out of my sight, and for that, Iâm sorryâbut if youâre willing to accept your parentsâ apology for abandoning your siblings, you should accept mine as well.â
âWhat did you say?â Matteo growled, but Christian did not care for his outburst.
âYou heard meââ
Matteo pushed his son to the side and held Christian by his collar, but Christian did not back down âlooking the man in his eyes. Meanwhile, Johnny, who saw this as his cue to leave, stepped out of the room with Siena in his arms.
âYou should keep this up and see whoâll remain at your side,â Matteo spoke. âYou screwed things up with the Fabio operation and made decisions on your own, and now we had to call off a bunch of people for the attack on your uncle and cancel all our plans because you canât take proper care of my daughter!â
âOh, pleaseâyou havenât taken care of her in years!â
âHey!â Emilio called out. âAll of you are fighting over someone who isnât even here at the moment.
Whatâs wrong with you?â He spoke some sense into them. âAll this time spent arguing couldâve been used to come up with a plan instead.â
Emilio glared at his dad. âDidnât we say we would get Serena back before mom finds out sheâs missing?â
Christian turned his head, thinking about Lucio. Also, he wanted to get her back before his dad could notice. If he would let his dad pass, he would do it in peace.
He stepped back but did not give Matteo an apology. Despite his grumpy personality, he always respected Matteo Alfonzo, mainly because he didnât carry a burden but things were different now.
He was the boss of the Lambertiâs and could not back down.
If Matteo didnât take him seriously, who would?
âHeâs right.â Someone sighed at the door. All heads turned to the familiar voice.
âVince?â Christian blinked a few times, confused about whether he was dreaming. âWhat are you doing here?â
It really was Vince, and most importantlyâhe was standing.
âWhat do you mean, what am I doing here?â Vince spoke, offended. âAfter Beau told me about Serena, I ripped all the tubes from my body to get here!â
Everyone looked at Beau, who shrugged his shoulders. âHe had the right to know.â He mumbled, but Christian was not impressed.
âVince, you need to get back to the hospitalâweâve got this handled.â
âI can tell.â Vince snorted sarcastically. âI think youâll all end up killing each other before you can even get to Serena.â He said. âBesides, I had a highly unstable father, even got shot by himâso perhaps I know how your uncleâs twisted brain works.â
Christian didnât want to admit it, but Vince was right. If anyone knew how to get her back without the possibility of her getting harmed, it would be him.
âCan you even walk?â Christian asked his friend. Vince shrugged. âIâm standing.â He spoke nonchalantly as he revealed an envelope in his hands.
He walked to Christian. âAnd I think this belongs to you.â He spoke. âSomeone left this at the front gates.â
Christian didnât waste any time and ripped over the envelope. He pulled out a letter and read it while everyone stared at him, full of anticipation.
âSo, what does it say?â Matteo asked, not able to wait any longer. âJust know that Iâm getting back my daughter today, with or without you.â
Christianâs hands trembled in anger. âIt says heâll give me back Sienaâs money and the warehouse in exchange for Serenaâsâ¦service.â He spoke. âWhatever the hell thatâs supposed to mean.â
Money? Christian never cared for that cash. It was never about the money or the warehouse. It was about him taking everything reserved for his one and only daughter.
âSerenaâs service?â Beau spoke, disgusted. âH-her what?â
Christian took a breath. With someone as crazy as his uncle, it was unclear what kind of service he was speaking of.
âVince, do you think thereâs a peaceful way to solve this?â
Vince huffed. âNo, I canât see that happening.â He told him the truth. âIn order for your uncle to let go of Serena, someone has to die first.â
Those were Christianâs exact thoughts. Even though he had promised Dario the honors of taking revenge on his dad by killing him, he wouldnât mind doing it himself.
âHe can put that money in his ass.â Christian crumpled the letter. He wouldâve walked through fire to protect Serena. âIâm getting back Serena and my baby today.â
Those already aware of the pregnancy did not have that much of a reaction, while the others slowly processed the news.
Matteo cleared his throat. âWait, babyâwhat baby?â
