Chapter l239
The Luna Choosing Game
Chapter 0239
The guard who had opened his mouth immediately did so again. âMany apologies, Your Royal Highness. We meant no offense. It was not meant to be a secret from you, thoughâ¦â His gaze shifted to me.
Beside me, Nicholas straightened, b*dy tense as a bow string. âSo you are following us?â
âFollowing Miss Piper, Sir.â The guard started to sweat. âThere have been reports of suspicious behavior.
For the safety of all, the captainâ thought we should keep an eye on her.â
I remembered Lilliana speaking with Joseph in the hallway, as they both glared at me. Shortly after,
Lilliana had made accusations at me that I hadnât understood at the time.
âAnd you suspect she will perform this suspicious behavior even when she is in my company?â Nicholasâs voice was going eerily emotionless. His anger must have been skyröcketingâ¦â¦
I touched his arm, hoping to soothe him. âThey only mean to protect you, Prince Nicholas.â I lowered my
voice. âPerhaps it is best if they continue to do so.â
He glanced at me sharply. âWhat?â
To the guards, I said, âI understand your precautions, gentlemen, and take no offense.â
The one who had spoken nodded at me, but then looked to Nicholas. The other had yet to lift his chin.
from his chest.
Nicholas searched my face. I didnât know what he saw there, but he eventually dismissed the guards.â
Carry on, then.â
He tugged me forward. When a buffer of space had opened between us and our tail, he said to me,
What are you thinking, Piper? They donât need to be following you around. Thatâs ridiculous.â
âWe both know I wouldnât do something,â I said. âBut isnât it safer if they keep a lookout for who they
think is me? They can follow her, too. This way, if she tries to hurt someone, they might be there. They can
step in and stop her.â
In my heart, I doubted Jane would be so careless as to let herself be trapped by the guard. If even I had
noticed them following us, Jane, with her years of onâtheârun experience, would never have been caught
unawares.
Still, even if the guardsâ presence only made her more cautious, that was time she spent hiding rather
than carrying out whatever plan she and Terry had up their sleeves. I only hoped it would give us enough
of a chance to catch up.
âIf Jane does do something, and the guards see, you will take the blame, Piper,â Nicholas said. âA guardâs word holds weight. You could even be tried.â
I understood the risk. âIâd never put the weight of my future over the potential life of anyone else.â
âWe donât know she would kill anyone,â Nicholas said.
I thought of Jane with her knife to my throat. âWe donât know she wouldnât either.â
He shook his head. âMaybe itâs time to simply reveal the secret of your sisterâs existence. Sheâs been in
the shadows too long. If we force her out into the light ââ
âNo,â I said, cutting him off. I understood his heart was in the right place, and was so grateful for it, but that was one secret that needed to stay buried as long as possible. âHow would I ever explain to Elva?â 1
âShe wouldnât make the connection.â
âNot right away, maybe. But sheâs bright, Nick. She sees everything. Eventually she will start asking questions. And I donât know that I have the answers to give her.â
âMaybe she should find out the truth,â Nicholas said. âWould that be so bad?â
âSheâs practically still a baby. I canât shatter her whole world like that.â
I tried to imagine a universe where Elva stopped calling me Mommy and it took everything in me not to
cry again.
âPlease, Nicholas. Keep this secret. For me.â (1
His jawline tensed. But, after a moment, he said, âFine.â A beat later, he added, âFor now.â
