Chapter Seven: Piggyback Rides

I walk back inside, smiling to myself. I walk into the kitchen, seeing my mom at the stove.

"Why are you always cooking?" I ask, hopping on the counter. "I mean, don't get me wrong. I love food."

"You never know. And my food is delicious." she laughs, but soon hisses, holding her stomach.

"What's wrong? Is the grape going to juice? Do I need to steal my own car and drive you to the hospital?!" I ask frantically, jumping down from the counter. She chuckles and places my hand on her stomach.

"Oh my- she's kicking?" I breath out in surprise. "That's so cool!" I move my hand so she feel herself.

"Aw.. she's just like you."

"There can only be one," I say, quoting Shawn from Psych. God I love that show.

"Well, now that can only be two." mom flicks my nose before turning back to the stove. I hear my phone ding from the living room, and I bolt out the kitchen.

I pick up my phone, gasping.

Oh my god! Beyoncè tweeted me!

Just kidding.

I'm not that famous.

Unknown: Go to your window.

7:59 p.m

Curiously, I walk upstairs. I step into my dark room, flick on the light and get into a fighting position. A booming laugh from outside startles me.

I look out my window and see Nova at his. I open mine, "Did you get the message too? Are you okay? Lets go kick some buttocks!"

He laughs even more, "Oh my god, Matthews. I sent you that message!" he wipes his eyes, his laughter slowing down.

"Wait.. if you did.. then how did you get my number? I didn't give it to you." I ask skeptically.

"I have my ways." he smirks, leaning on the seal.

"But why are you texting me?"

"Why does it matter? Shouldn't you be in bed? You go to sleep early, right."

"No... yes... maybe?" I furrow my brows, "Wait how do you know that?!"

"Good night,"

"Hey you have to answer my-"

"Good night Frost."

I eventually fell asleep last night.

I trudge downstairs, yawning. I stroll into the kitchen and find my mom once again, cooking.

"Morning honey."

"Morning ma," I greet, grabbing an apple. The door bell rings, and I go to answer it. Expecting it to be Nova, it is instead Kai.

"Oh, hey Chip!" I beam at him. He nervously smiles.

"Can you drive me to school? I-I missed the bus.."

"Duh." I go back inside, grab my bag, and head back outside. "Cole is probably gonna drive Manon, like always." We walk down and off my porch, heading for my car.

Suddenly, Kai gives me hug. "What's up?" I ask, patting his back.

"Nothing.. I'm just thankful for you being my friend.. I don't want you to leave.."

"Well I won't okay? I never leave my friends."

"Okay... but what about your other friend?"

"What other friend?"

"That one!" Kai suddenly moves behind me, hiding. I look around and see Nova stomping towards us.

"What are you two doing alone and hugging?" Nova demands and makes a move to grab Kai. I block his arm, frowning at him.

"Nova, don't you even touch Chip! He's too adorable to get hurt!" I wail, lightly kicking Nova's shin.

"You didn't answer my question. Why are you two hugging?"

"Me no speak-a english." I lie, shoving Kai in my car. I hop in myself, give Nova a smile, and drive away.

We drived to school, ready to begin our day.

"Do you want to come to the movies with me, Manon and Cole tonight? First we're going out to eat." I ask, holding Kai's arm so he doesn't get swallowed up in the sea of kids.

"Is Nova going?"

"If he wants to." I answer. We walk by Rose and she sticks her foot out. Being the idiot I am, I trip over it. Letting out a scream, I go flying into the ground. I close my eyes, ready to take impact.

Could.. could this be my ending? My time on Earth... is up. I will never see the face of my new baby sister again... or my mom. The woman who raised me by her lonesome. I always thought I would annoy the wrong person.. and get strangled, shot, ran over, choke on a popcorn or something. Not by a foot. My death certificate would probably look like this.

Name: Frost Matthews

Age: 17

Cause of death: being the most biggest idiot and tripping over a foot.

But, nothing comes. No cold tile, or my head busting open. I open my eyes, and failed to notice the arms wrapped around my waist, holding me not even an inch up from the ground. My nose scarcely brushes against the cold floor.

I almost died! I saw my life flash in front of me! Thank you God!

Too afraid to move, I'm pulled up and turned around. I see Nova's brown eyes digging into mine.

Of course.

"Are you okay?" he asks. I shake my head yes. I cognizance that everyone has stopped walking to stare at us. Kai glances at me, then Nova and then me again before disappearing.

Nooo, Chip don't leave me!

"Are you hurt?" his eyes begin checking my face for injuries, and Rose exclaims in frustration.

"Of course she's not hurt! I'm the hurt one here, she could've broke my foot!"

"Should've, could've, would've." I mumble and Nova's lips twitch.

"You bitch!"

Nova whips his head, "Don't start something you can't finish Rose," he growls. She scrunches up her nose before strutting away.

"Thank you." I free myself away, and just like that, everyone begins walking again. At this moment, my worst nightmare happens.

The final bell rang.

"Oh no.." I widen my eyes and begin taking off down the hallway. "You are on your own!" I yell to Nova.

I ran down the hallway, pushing past the other late students, most of them in the younger grades. I burst open the door, interrupting Mr. Earl. Everyone stares at me, including Manon. He gives me a disappointed look, I sheepishly smile at him and sit in the spot next to Manon.

Nova walks in, and gets the same look. "Care to explain why you two are late?"

"I was giving Matthews a ride and my car broke down." Nova lies, staring at me the whole time.

"Is that correct Frost?" Mr. Earl says.

I nod, "Totally."

Nova takes a seat, and Mr. Earl begins his lesson again.

"What took you so long?" Manon whispers to me.

"Girl let me tell you. I almost died."

Math went by quickly, and so did History and Science.

And now.. heh.. now, it's lunch time.

I spot Kai standing alone, and hand Manon my lunch tray. "Chip!" I throw my arms around Kai, "Wanna sit with me, Manon and the boys?"

"I don't think Nova likes me.." he whispers. I gasp, placing a hand over my heart.

"How can he not? You are, so, freaking adorable!" I once again squish his cheeks.

Manon chuckles behind me, "Yeah, come on. They won't bite."

"No thanks I-" I don't let him finish before I scoop him up, throwing him over my shoulder. He screams like a girl, and I walk over to the boys.

He's so light.

I set Kai down, "Hello boys!" I greet Nova and Cole, along with the other boys on the football team with Nova and Cole. They all mutter a hey, except for Nova. Instead, he stares Kai down.

"Everyone, this is Chip or Kai. I want you to treat him like he's a precious gem. 'Cause he is," I dangle my arm over Kai's shoulders, and pull him in. Nova's expression darkens.

"H-Hi," he stutters.

We take our seats, Manon next to Cole like always. I sit next to Kai, shielding him from Nova's glare.

"When is your guys next game?" I ask the boys.

"Next week," one of them answers, not even looking up from his phone.

"You smell like a baby prostitute."

"Oh.. my life.. I thought it was over this morning... but it's not."

"Frost are you okay?"

"Just go Chip! Manon, Cole, go without me! The light! The light is coming! I can see it! I... I want to go towards it!"

"I'm too young to die!"

"Matthews what the hell are you doing on my car!" Nova's voice interrupts my dramatic wailing.

I peek open an eye, "I'm dying."

"Why on my car?!" he screeches.

"P.e." Manon says and I gasp dramatically.

"The horror!"

He curses underneath his breath, stomping to me. "Oh my legs.." I groan. In p.e, we had to run a timed mile and my legs are killing me.

"Matthews get off my car so we can leave." he grumbles and yanks me off the car. I stumble, clutching onto him.

I look into his eyes, "Can I have a... piggyback ride? I love piggyback rides. My last death wish is to have a piggyback ride.."

"No," he pushes me off him. "Guys, get in." I fold my arms, climbing in after Kai and Manon. I sat between Kai and Manon, pouting.

Then we start driving. Nova kept glancing at me in the rear-view mirror, so I wrap my arms around Kai.

He glares at me and I smile.

Should've gave me a piggyback ride buttface.

"What movie are we watching?" Cole asks.

"The new Jumanji." I answer and Manon squeals.

"I've been wanting to see that!"

We pull into the parking lot of Al's Sushi, the place where we all decided to go.

Except for Nova of course.

We walk in and up to the sushi window. "Can we have ten California rolls, and ten Anago rolls please." I say to the man at the register.

Oo.. he's cute..

He smiles at me and Manon before going to the window. He gets our sushi, handing the bag to me. I dig out my wallet but Nova stops me, handing the guy the money.

"All my life I had to fight," I tell him, leading them to a booth.

I plunk down next to Nova, "Want some?" he scrunches his nose up. I shrug and hand out the sushi. "It's really good.."

"Yeah I love sushi! My mom doesn't make it too often though." Kai beams, but doesn't take any sushi.

"Take some then," Cole says, pushing the tray to him. Kai shakes his head, a light blush on his cheeks.

"Chip, it's fine. We don't mind." Manon says. He finally takes one, shoving the whole thing in his mouth.

A man after my own heart.

Conversations start while we eat.

"Come on Nova, try one." I hold one up to his mouth. He shakes his head, but his eyes stay on the sushi.

"I know you want to.." I push it against his lips.

"I don't like sushi," he whispers. I wiggle my brows and push out my lip. He finally opens his mouth and takes it.

He chews in annoyance, "You're annoying."

"I know!"

We finished eating, and started heading to the movie theater.

"Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful?"

"God shut up Matthews,"

"Never!"

"Will you still love me when I got nothing but my aching soul?" I sing but louder.

"For fuck sakes Matthews I will turn this car around!" Nova exclaims, glaring at me in the mirror. I stick my tongue out at him.

"I think you sound great.." Kai whispers to me. "He's just being grumpy."

"I know," I whisper back.

"Excuse me, but you're in my car. Whatever you say is to be said out loud." Nova snarls.

And I thought I was nosey.

"Look Nova. Don't ruin our plans because you're jealous of Kai. You wanted to come, now get off of him, stop being an asshole and bitching or so help me, I'll give you something to bitch about." Manon remarks, and Cole bursts out laughing.

Kai sinks in the seat, and I raise a brow at Nova. Nova clenches his jaw, breathing deeply.

"That's my girl," Cole says, making Manon blush.

Oh. We're on the 'my girl' stage, huh. First it's the staring, then the sitting together, then the arm thing and now, it's the 'my girl'. We're getting somewhere.

Me: hey mom. We're almost to the theater, I don't know when it ends but if it ends late, don't stay up.

4:50 p.m

Mom: Okay honey. Have fun!

4:50 p.m

Me: don't get down and pop your booty without me.

4:51 p.m

Mom:

4:52 p.m

I chuckle out loud at her message. I then imagine her doing that, before fully laughing. I tilt my head back, laughing extremely hard.

Everyone watches me. I begin laughing so hard to the point I start to gurgle. "Um.. what's wrong with her?" Kai asks.

I've been told that my laugh sounds like a hyena mixed with a witch.

"She probably just saw something funny.." Manon says before slowly laughing along. Tears begin to roll down my face.

"I don't know what's funnier," Cole snickers.

"Her face, or her laugh."

When I wear my heel boots, they give me like an inch of height.

I'm already tall enough.
