Ava's POV
I looked up at him, my pulse racing with a mix of defiance and dread as he towered over me, eyes blazing with a dangerous determination. For a fleeting second, I saw something raw and untamed in his gazeâa glimpse of the man he was before all this bitterness, before his fatherâs twisted will forced us back into each otherâs lives.
The room grew impossibly quiet, like the silence just before a storm breaks, amplifying every breath, every heartbeat. He pinned me with his stare, his expression twisted with fury and something else, something darker. A slow smirk crept onto my lips, a rebellion rising from somewhere deep within.
âWhatâs the matter, Orion?â I taunted, my voice a challenge wrapped in silk. âAfraid to fuck me?â
The reaction was instant. His face hardened, a flash of anger and wounded pride flickering behind those intense eyes. Before I could process it, he grabbed my wrists, pressing me down firmly, his grip both punishing and possessive.
âFuck you?â he spat, his tone laced with sarcasm. âDonât flatter yourself, Ava. The only thing tying me to you is this ridiculous will.â
He leaned down, his breath hot against my ear as he added, âAnd even that wonât be enough to keep me from walking out once I have what I want.â
âOh, is that what you tell yourself every night while you are running from me?â I breathed, a whisper of defiance slipping through my controlled facade. His grip tightened, and I knew Iâd struck a nerve.
âRunning?â He let out a low, humorless laugh, his mouth close enough that I could feel his lips graze my cheek. âIf anyone's running, itâs youâhiding behind your games, your words. But let's not pretend. You wanted this. Crave it even. I didn't.â
With a jolt of anger, I twisted beneath him, trying to free myself. âI didn't want any of this, Orion. Not the wealth, not the fame, and certainly not you.â
âOh, really?â His voice dropped to a dark whisper. âThen why do you keep pushing, Ava? Why keep tempting fate?â
He ran his hand down the curve of my jaw, lingering at my neck where my pulse beat erratically beneath his touch. I felt a pang of fear but also a thrill, a rush of adrenaline that I couldnât quite explain. His thumb brushed over my skin, both gentle and threatening, a reminder of just how easily he could break me.
âGo ahead,â I taunted, my voice low and fierce. âShow me how much control you have. Prove to me that I mean nothing to you.â
For a moment, something flickered in his eyes, an emotion he quickly masked. He released me, stepping back as if my words had burned him. His jaw clenched, and his hands fell to his sides, fists tight with barely controlled rage.
âCareful, Ava,â he warned, his voice rough. âYou have no idea who youâre dealing with.â
I sat up, meeting his stare with equal intensity, feeling my heart thunder in my chest. âNeither do you.â
There was a long, charged silence between us, and then he let out a harsh breath, running a hand through his hair in frustration. He looked as if he was caught between two worldsâthe life he wanted and the chains binding him to me. And I knew he hated it.
âLetâs get one thing straight,â he said coldly, his eyes narrowing. âWeâll do this, but on my terms. Iâm not some pawn in yours or my father's twisted game.â
âTwisted?â I laughed, my voice laced with bitterness. âYouâre the one who agreed to your fatherâs will, not me. If anything, youâre as much a part of this as I am.â
His face twisted with disgust, and he let out a low growl. âThis was never about choice, Ava. It is about preserving my father's legacy.â
âPreserving?â I echoed, my heart skipping a beat. âOrion, thatâs what you tell yourself, isnât it? But deep down, you wanted thisâthis empire, this control. After all, you are your father's son.â
âI am nothing like my father,â he growled.
âThen prove it.â I lifted my chin defiantly, daring him to challenge me. âAbandon the will and fortune. I promise not to ever cross your path."
His face hardened, and he took a step back, his gaze never leaving mine. âFine, Ava. Iâll prove it. All it should take is one month, and you'll be gone. Back to the slump where you belong.â
With that, he stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind him. I heard his footsteps fade down the hallway, and a sense of emptiness filled the space where heâd stood moments before. But as I sat there, catching my breath, a spark of satisfaction flickered within me. He was angry, yes, but I could see it in his eyesâhe was shaken.
Maybe this was my way of taking back control, of finally breaking free from the life my father had forced upon me. And as much as Orion despised me, he couldnât deny the pull between us, the tension that simmered beneath every word, every look.
Yet, just as I began to feel a glimmer of victory, the sound of footsteps echoed outside my room once more. The door creaked open, and I looked up, expecting to see Orion's angry face, but instead, it was Chloe.
Her eyes glinted with malicious satisfaction as she stepped inside, closing the door softly behind her. She tilted her head, smiling in a way that made my skin crawl.
âYou really thought you had the upper hand, didnât you?â she sneered, crossing her arms. âBut youâre forgetting one thing, Ava.â
I kept my face impassive, refusing to show any weakness. âAnd whatâs that?â
She leaned in close, her voice a whisper filled with malice. âYou may have the will, but I have Orion. And trust me when I say, heâd rather burn this empire to the ground than share it with you, not to mention sharing your bed.â
Her words cut deeper than I wanted to admit, but I forced myself to stay calm, my gaze steady as I looked into her eyes.
âYouâre right, Chloe,â I said softly, my voice steady. âBut tell me, does he know just how desperately you cling to his side?
Her face twisted with anger, and she took a threatening step closer. âYouâre nothing, Ava. And soon, youâll be exactly where you belongâout of our lives for good.â
With that, she spun around and left the room, her footsteps echoing down the hallway like a drumbeat of doom. As the door clicked shut, a cold realization settled over me. Chloe wasnât just a passing flingâshe was determined, ruthless, willing to do whatever it took to keep me from my place in this family.
But two could play that game. I wouldnât let her, or anyone, strip me of my legacy, of the control Iâd fought so hard to groom. I would fight back, and Iâd fight dirty if I had to.
Just as I began to formulate a plan, the door burst open again, and this time, it was Orion, his face a mask of anger and frustration. He looked at me, and I knewâwhatever had just transpired between him and Chloe had only fueled his hatred toward me.
âGet ready, Ava,â he said, his voice like ice. âBecause from this moment on, youâre going to regret every move you've made.â
A shiver ran down my spine, but I refused to break under his glare. I straightened, meeting his fury with my own resolve.
âBring it on,â I whispered, my voice fierce, every word a challenge.
Orionâs face twisted with a mixture of anger and something else, something I couldnât quite place. And then he was gone, leaving me alone in the room, my heart pounding with both fear and anticipation.
I was ready for the war. Right?
