Chapter 4

When he opened his eyes, he was no longer in his hotel room. He knew where he was; he’d been here many times, yet knew not what it was. Anya rarely dreamed a normal dream, but when he heard stories of flying or embarrassing scenarios, he could never relate. He always had the same dream, or some variation of it. He would awake lying on a broken marble floor, the air around him seeming as if it was buzzing. Nothing ever happened in the dream, but the buzzing was always there. When he was younger, he couldn’t even move in the dream, but now he could at least stand and look around. Large pillars of marble and long corridors stood all around him. Nothing ever changed, but he was always aware when he was there. It felt like home. A place he knew inside and out, yet never truly knew what it was. Yet today was different; the air was thick in the dream. The buzzing was more extreme than usual, nearly shaking his vision. He looked around, and nothing seemed different, but he knew something was. He had described this dream to many before. None could really make much sense of it. A large temple of marble, consistent in his dreams, but unlike anywhere he’d ever seen. Yet today it was uncharacteristically inconsistent; the air seemed as if it were burning. Unlike any time he had been there before. He struggled to stand, feeling as if the air were crushing him from all directions, and he was swallowed by black once again.
