About to meet Everett, huh?
Dorothy couldnât quite put into words how she was feeling at that time. It was like hanging in mid air, not
knowing whether to go up or down.
Part of her war led to find an excuse to bail, but then again, why run?
After all, she and Everett had to sort things out sooner or later, be it breaking up or whatever. They
were bound to cross paths eventually. Kevin had given his instructions and left, which left Dorothy
unable to focus on work the rest of the afternoon, Her mind was preoccupied with the upcoming
evening meeting.
After work, she stepped out of the office and saw Kennethâs car parked in the distance, with Karen
waiting by the side. Dorothy quickly headed over âWhat brings you guys here?â
1 figured the head office is far from my place, and Kenneth here was free, so I asked him to give âNo
need. I can just take the subway.â
e us a ride.â
Karen looped her arm through Dorothyâs affectionately, giggling, âI just wanted to spend more time with
you! When we were at the Prosperity Consortium, we could see each other every day. Now that youâre
here, I got no one to chat with!â
Dorothy was left speechless by Karenâs anties, and she simply shrugged and replied. âThen you better
buckle down and work hard. Mr. Percy has been too busy to bother you lately, but some yearâend, heâll
be all over your performance.â
âScared of him?â Karen milled her eyes dramatically. And if he does, Iâll just qui!! Iâve had enough of his
way of doing things. Heâs always trying to grab the glory but blaming others when things go wrongâ
Karen wasnât under pressure to earn money. Her family didnât depend on it
But things were different for Dorothy.
Kenneth, who had been silent all that while, chimed in. âThatâs just how it is in the workplace these
days. Not just in your company, even among teaching staff and principalsâ
âDo you get bullied by your principal too?â
âNo way. He wouldnât dare,â
Kennethâs reputation and status at school meant the principal wouldnât dare to act recklessly towards
him.
Karen smirked, âEnough chitâchat Letâs go and grab some grub. Iâm starving
With that, she tried to pull Dorothy along.
âI have a meeting at eight, and I need to prepare some documents now, so I cant join youâ
She did have work to do, but also, she didnât want to spend too much time with Kenneth outside of
work. She knew he was a good guy and could guess what he was trying to imply, but at least for the
time being, Dorothy cdnât have the energy or the heart to deal with romantic issues.
Especially considering her current situation with Everett, which was still up in the air. She couldnât
afford any further complications.
âHuh? Youâre still working after hours? Karenâs face fell.
She had been hoping to help her best friend and Kenneth get closer
âYeah, I have a lot on my plate. Itâs a good thing, in any case. I want to eam more money so that my
mom can have a stable place to live after she gets discharged from the hospital.â
She could handle renting a place on her own, but her mom was a different story. If she encountered a
difficult landlord, she might not have been able to cope.
Karen was about to argue some more when Kenneth beat her to it.
âLet me take you home, then, After that, I take Karen out for dinner.â
âNo, really. 111 just take the subway
âStop turning us down! Youâre making Kenneth feel awkward.â Karenâs words made it clear that if
Dorothy refused again, theâd be making things unconfortable for everyone.
night then. Thanks for the ride, Mr. Nelson.â
