Dorothy was on pins and needles, feeling every breath she took in the Lopez Corporation was laced
with danger.
âHeâs announced marriage, for crying out loud! How can Everett justify this to his wife?â
âWhy donât you take that up with Mr. Lopez yourself?â
What could Kevin possibly say? Mr. Lopez wasnât one to take kindly to loose talk
âForget it, I wonât press youâ Dorothyâs shoulders slumped in resignation. âThanks anyway, Kevin.â
âDonât mention it.â Kevin offered a reassuring smile before glancing at his watch. âMr. Lopez should be
out of his meeting in about an hour. Just wait for him in his designated parking spot.â
âJust text me the location, Iâll find my own way there!â The further she could stay from Everett, the
better.
âOh, come on, Ms. Sanchez, whatâs the point of all this squirming? Maybe Mr. Lopez just wants to
discuss work with you. By resisting, youâre just making it awkward for everyone. Unless⦠youâve got
other things on your mind.â
Dorothy didnât answer.
Kevin was almost out the door when he paused, as if struck by an afterthought. âActually, thereâs
something else I might say.â
âGo ahead, Kevin.â
âRemember what you told me back at the Bay Residence? Maybe you should try telling Mr. Lopez.
Who knows⦠maybe youâre the one heâs chosen.â
Dorothy was taken aback, her gaze falling silently to the floor.
Kevin sighed before finally leaving her office.
Once the door clicked shut, Dorothy whispered to the empty room, âAnd what if Iâm not the one he
chooses?â
She couldnât bet on Everett standing by her side against his own mother, especially not to the point of
sending his mom
to jail!
After all, if she had to choose between Everett and her mother Bella, she knew she wouldnât be able to
do it either.
An hour later, Dorothy found herself in the CEOâs private parking spot.
Maybe, just like Kevin said, she needed to be more open. Just consider Everett as a new boss and
nothing more.
And tonight, sheâd draft her resignation letter, hand it in tomorrow, and after a sixâmonth notice period,
she could leave the Lopez Corporation behind. She was no match for him; she had to play by the rules.
Lost in her thoughts, she suddenly heard footsteps behind her.
Her body stiffened involuntarily as if sheâd been plastered in place.
In sharp contrast to her tension, Everett maintained his impeccable CEO demeanor, approaching with
long, confident strides. âGet in the car,â he commanded.
âOkay,â she complied without argument.
The silence in the car was so profound that Dorothy found herself counting Everettâs breaths.
Then, abruptly, he broke the quiet.
âHave you reviewed the project materials?â
âYes, but I didnât have much time to go through them thoroughlyâ
âJust get the gist of it for now. Take them home tonight and look them over in detail.â
She nodded and looked out the window, only to realize they were on the road to Bay Residence.
15:21
âArenât we supposed to meet with the head of the partner company?â
Why were they heading to his house?
Everett caught her eye in the rear view mirror, his voice calm. âI need to stop by Bay Residence to sort
out my sonâs lunch, and then weâll head to the meeting.â
His son?
He must mean Langston!

Dorothyâs heart skipped a beat as she realized she was facing Everettâs first test.
