Yep, that was Everettâs phone number!
No way in hell would Dorothy ever forget the number.
How did he get her number? And why was he calling her?
âDorothy, why arenât you picking up?â Karen, who was sitting in the passenger seat, turned around to
see her. Noticing something off, she asked, âYou look pale. Whoâs calling?â
âItâs Everettâ¦â
Kenneth, who was driving, slammed on the brakes.
âWhat?! Who?â
âEverett. As she spoke, the phone stopped ringing, the screen showing a missed call.
Kenneth glanced at Dorothy from the rearâview mirror, a tense atmosphere spreading in the car.
âDid he find out something?â
Karen reached out to take the phone. âGive it to me, Iâll answer it. Letâs see what he wants. I can
pretend I donât know who he is. After all, I donât know his number and your phone is registered under
my name. Itâs normal for me to take the call.â
But Dorothy just stared at the screen, not responding.
Until Abigail and Langston, realizing that something was wrong with their mom, started tugging at her
clothes.
âMommy, whatâs wrong?â Abigail blinked.
Langston was a bit more astute. After a momentâs thought, he pulled out his own phone. âMommy, is
that guy bullying you again? Iâll get back at him right now!â
âNo.â Dorothy finally spoke. âNo, let me calm down for a bit.â
She needed to know why Everett was calling her, at least get a sense of how far his suspicions or
investigations had gone.
*Kenneth, you take the kids and go ahead.â
âNo way! I canât leave you alone!â The thought of the people who had once harmed Dorothyâs mother
made Kenneth unwilling to leave Dorothy alone in Eldorria City.
If they could strike once, they could strike again!
âIâll be fine, and Iâll join you guys soon!â
After saying this, Dorothy patted her son and daughter on their shoulders, then got out of the car.
As Kenneth was about to follow her, Karen held him back.
âBro! Itâs perfectly normal for Everett to be suspicious when Langston suddenly appears in the public
eye. He might just be routinely checking to see which of the women heâs been with gave birth to his
son! If Dorothy refuses to take the call and hides, his suspicions will only grow,â
Kenneth furrowed his brow, his handsome face stern. âHe has the nerve to question Dorothy! If it
werenât for him, Dorothyâs mother wouldnât have
died!â
âWhatâs the use of saying these things now?â Karen moved to the back seat, hugging the two children.
âAll we need to do is protect these two cubs. Thatâs the best way we can help Dorothy. Let her handle
the rest. If she needs us, sheâll ask.â
âKaren, Iâ¦â
âI know what youâre thinking, but Dorothy made clear that she doesnât want your help. You need to
know your limits.â
Kenneth was silent for a long while before starting the car again.
âYeah, I should know my limits.â
Summer evenings were supposed to be cool and pleasant, but the wind was unusually strong tonight.
Dorothy pulled her coat tighter around her, found a bench under a bus stop and sat down.
Looking at the missed call on her phone screen, she took several deep breaths. Her fingertips were
slightly trembling as she dialed back.
