âStop it! Itâs not her fault!â Jeffrey urged. âYouâve already caused the death of her mother How could you
have the heart to do that?â
He didnât approve of Everett and Dorothyâs relationship either. Because he thought Everett was being
irrational and his emotions were impeding his career. But he never thought of forcing Dorothy away
from him in such a devious, lethal way.
âWe didnât harm her mother. Her motherâs emotional instability led to her illness and death.â
âWe both know what really happened We have been friends for many years, and I havenât told Everett
about this. I kept this a secret for you, but thatâs all I can do for you. Donât expect to use me anymore.â
Then Jeffrey hung up.
Heather stared at the now dark screen with her eyebrows furrowed in deep thought.
Something was off.
Jeffreyâs reaction was clearly protective of Dorothy. They had met overseas before, but Jeffrey hadnât
shown any favoritism towards Dorothy at that time. Now, however, he was constantly warning Heather
to leave Dorothy alone.
This could only mean that Dorothy had reappeared.
Something must have happened between them again.
âDorothy. Why wonât you just disappear?!â
The next morning. Dorothy went straight from the hotel to the construction site.
She was surprised to see Lane talking to Austin from afar.
She thought she had made it clear to Lane that she wouldnât consider him, so he should have left the
country. Why was he still here?
Austin was the first to notice Dorothy. He waved cheerfuly at her then walked over with Lane
âIf youâre not feeling well, you donât have to come to the construction site. Itâs dusty here. Itâs not a
place for a lady.â Austinâs attitude towards Dorothy had become more and more respectful, all thanks to
whatever Lane had told him.
He was obsequious, flattering, and overly respectful
Not at all the way a supervisor should behave towards an employee.
âThere are many things here that need supervision and finalization. Iâm strict about the details, and I
worry that they might cut comers when Iâm
not around.â
âIâm here too, so you can just tell me.â Austin quickly added, âOh, I just remembered I have something
else to do. You two chat, Iâll leave first.â
He didnât was for Dorothy to respond and tunned to leave, as if someone were chasing him
Once Austin left, only Dorothy and Lane were left. An awkward atmosphere hung between them
âUm. I should go too.â
âYou donât really have a husband, do you?â Lane asked.
Dorothy was speechless
Dorothy didnât expect Lane to say that outright.
She was taken aback and just stood there staring at him.
âYou made up the husband because you didnât want to be pursued âLane continued.
âYouâre overthinking Not only do I have a husband, but I also have a daughter. Surely you donât think I
made that up too?â
Lane smiled as his thin lips curled up.
âYou do have a daughter, but sheâs not two years old, right?â
âWhat do you know?â
âJeffrey told me everything about you and Me Lopez Laneâs gaze met her frantic eyes. âIncluding your
manage historyâ
