Despite his resources and capabilities, he could have easily manipulated Dorothy into staying by his
side. But he didnât. He couldnât bear the thought of Dorothy getting hurt. He wanted Dorothy to be
happy. If her happiness couldnât include him, heâd rather disappear.
âBut sheâs already hurt you so much! I canât stand to see it anymore, Everett! Just give me the word,
and Iâll find out who her husband is and let him know who heâs messed with! If that doesnât work. Il
confront her! make Dorothy come back to you, even if it means dragging her back!â
âNo.âEverettâs voice finally broke, barely able to conceal his desolation Treally love her, but itâs time for
me to let go.â
Instead of returning to the construction site, Dorothy went back to her hotel.
She lay down on the bed without even taking off her coat or setting down her purse.
Everettâs voice kept replaying in her head.
Truth be told, she missed Everett. She wanted to record his voice and listen to it when she felt like she
was losing control, so she could find some sort of peace.
Like a junkle finding relief in their addiction,
But reality wouldnât allow it.
There were too many complications. She had to remind herself to stay away from Everett
Her phone rang abruptly from inside her purse, making Dorothy sit up. Tears fell from her eyes down to
her coat, and only then did she realize that she was crying
After taking a few deep breaths. Dorothy reached for her phone and answered the call.
âHello. Lane.â
âWhy havenât you come back? Did Jeffrey do something? Tell me! I may be friends with him, but justice
is on my side.â Lane sounded anxious. He assumed Jeffrey must have caused some trouble.
Corporation, remember? There was a minor misunderstanding
Lane seemed skeptical âitâs just a minor misunderstanding, then letâs clear it up faceâtoâface
âNo, we just talked about the past. We used to work together at the Lopez Corpora
âNo need I wonât cross paths with him anymore, so thereâs no need to clear anything up. Lane, after
this project, Iâm leaving the country, I donât want my past to haunt me anymore.â Dorothy paused. âIâm
sorry I couldnât make it for dinner. I promise I treat you next time. Iâm not feeling well today.â
There wasnât much Lane could say to that
âEven though I donât know the details between you and Jeffrey, I know youâre a good person. If thereâs
a conflict, itâs definitely Jeffreyâs fault. Donât worry, at least in my presence, you wonât get hurt.â
âLane, thatâs a strong statement. My husband wouldnât like thatâ Dorothy said while laughing lightly. She
didnât want to embarass Lane, but she also didnât want him to harbor any illusions.
fit
She didnât have the energy to entertain anyoneâs pursuit, even if it was her caring boss.
Because no one could ever be as good to her as Everett had been.
Absolutely no one
