All the way there, Jeffrey wouldnât stop yapping about their memories from childhood to adulthood, but
none of it reached Everettâs ears. Once they arrived at the company, he didnât even bother to say
goodbye to Jeffrey and just went straight up in the CEOâs private elevator. âMr. Lopez, about the
infringement lawsuit against N&P Enterprises, do you need to gather more lawyers?â The secretary
knocked on the door and just happened to come in with some documents. âI heard theyâve got some
big-shot lawyer on their side.â
Everett adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses. He was unfazed and signed his name at the bottom of the
document.
âDonât worry. Weâll let Ms. Heather handle all legal matters when she gets back.â
âMs. Heather is coming back to the head office?â Upon hearing this, the secretaryâs previous worry
disappeared like smoke in thin air. âThatâs great. Weâve got this lawsuit in the bag then!â
He wasnât exaggerating.
In the past few years, any major lawsuit that the Lopez Corporation faced was dealt with easily as long
as Heather was their defense lawyer.
Just as the secretary was about to leave, feeling relieved, Everett stopped him.
âGrab some fruits and supplements on your way out and send them to room V1 at the City Hospital.â
âSure thing, Mr. Lopezâ
After he left, Everett took out the marriage certificate he had just received from the pocket of his suit
jacket. Everettâs fingers lightly brushed over it. After a good while, he got up and neatly placed it in the
safe.
In the hospital, the smell of disinfectant was still everywhere.
Dorothy had been waiting in room V1 for almost two hours before Bella woke up from her deep coma.
Her condition was better this time. At least she had the energy to lift her hand.
âMom, you finally woke up! The doctor just came by, and Iâve signed all the surgery consent forms. You
can have the surgery in a few days.â
When signing the papers, she was so excited that she could barely hold the pen.
In contrast to Dorothyâs joy, Bella just frowned.
âDorothy, where did the money for the surgery come from?â
âI borrowed it.â
Dorothy obviously wouldnât tell her mother the truth.
But saying she borrowed it wasnât exactly a lie, since she was using Everettâs money for the surgery
now, but she would pay him back once she saved up enough.
âItâs one million, right? Who would lend you that?â Bella said as she tried to sit up, getting agitated. âTell
me the truth! Did you get this money through some shady means?â
âNoâ Dorothy, having no other choice, said, âIâm dating a guy. He lent it to me.â
Upon hearing this, Bella was even more upset.
âNo way. Iâm not doing the surgery. Give him back his money!â
Dorothy furrowed her brow, feeling helpless. âMom, not having the surgery could put your life at risk.â
âIâd rather die that let you spend a manâs money! Havenât I always told you that men are no good?
Especially the rich ones. Theyâre not reliable!â
Bella was tricked in the same way back in the day. Her husband was full of sweet promises before they
got married, but he cheated on her after only two years of marriage. He even fathered a child out of
wedlock.
âSo, what do you want me to do?â Dorothy was too exhausted, so she couldnât control herself. She
unwillingly raised her voice slightly. âMy dad might as well be dead, and if something happens to you,
Iâll be an orphan!â
She took a breath and gently rubbed her motherâs hand. âMom, I promise you. Iâll definitely pay him
back, okay?â
She wanted to strive to settle the debt with Everett by the time they divorced.
