But the voice on the other end wasnât Everettâs. It was his assistant returning the call.
Dorothy felt a tad bummed, but she still gave it a try. âIâm Dorothy Sanchez. A classmate of Mr. Lopez.
Could you please relay a message to him? Iâd like him to call me back.â
âAlright, Ms. Sanchez. Is there anything else?â
âNo, thank you.â
After hanging up, she suddenly felt a twinge of understanding towards her motherâs desperate leap
from the building.
When youâre backed into a comer by all sorts of unexpected events, you really just feel like throwing in
the towel.
The hospital was frigid.
By the wee hours, Dorothy jolted awake on the patientâs chair, realizing she had dozed off out of sheer
exhaustion.
She checked on her sleeping mother and tucked her in.
Her phone was flooded with messages from Karen.
âDorothy, donât worry: Iâve already called my parents. They agreed to lend you another 200k, so youâll
have 400k. Weâll piece it together bit by bit. 111 reach out to some other friends tomorrow; weâll
definitely reach our goal.â
âDonât scare me! Reply, Dorothy! Donât do anything stupidâ
âDorothy, where are you? Iâm in Eldorria City, and Iâm going to my parentsâ place to get the money.
Weâve raised 450k so far.â
Dorothy quickly left the ICU to call Karen back.
âYou were about to scare me to death, you know!â.
âIâm sorry⦠I was in the ICU, so my phone was on silent.â
âDonât despair. Who said thereâs no hope? Remember, if money can solve the problem, itâs not a
problem.â
Just as Dorothy was about to respond, out of the corner of her eye, she spotted a tall figure appearing
at the other end of the long hospital hallway.
It was like a deity had descended.
In her ear, Karen was calling out, âHello? Dorothy! Hello? Why canât I hear you?â
The man strode towards her, removing his coat and draping it around the frail Dorothy.
âItâs cold at night. Youâll catch a cold.â
His voice was as icy as ever, and his deep eyes were focused on her.
Dorothy momentarily thought she was hallucinating out of despair.
âWhoâs that? Hello, Dorothy!â Karen was still talking on the other end.
Dorothy quickly told Karen that she had something to deal with and hung up.
âYou⦠Why are you here?â
âDidnât you call for me?â
She quickly moistened her dry lips, instinctively smoothing her hair. âYes, I did⦠I needed to see youâ
But when it came to it, Dorothy realized she didnât know what to say.
Everett, on the other hand, only stayed silent for a few seconds before speaking, âHave you made up
your mind?â
Without hesitation, Dorothy nodded. âIâll marry you! No, no, I mean, Iâm willing to help you out. Can
you⦠help my mom?â
He had never seen Dorothy this flustered before. A smirk tugged at the corner of his lips, but then he
seemed to remember something.
âWhat about your boyfriend?â
Dorothy fell silent.
âI wonât be the third wheel. Youâd better break up with him first.â
Instinctively, Dorothy wanted to say she didnât have a boyfriend, but wouldnât that mean she purposely
rejected him earlier?
If she changed her mind now, wouldnât Everett think she was playing him?
So after a moment of hesitation, she just nodded. âIâll break up with him right now.â
âOk, itâs late. Weâll get our marriage license tomorrow morning.â
