Laura took the check and put it in front of Agnes, “Agnes, don’t get mad. Beatrice is still young, not quite understanding certain things, but she means well. If this money is causing you trouble, then take it back. Our company may be in a tight spot, but we’re not desperate for half a million.”

Even though Laura spoke softly, her words were dripping with sarcasm.
