Chapter 16: Prophecies, Passwords, and a Locked Room With No Door
Ethan woke to a note pinned to his door with a ceremonial toothpick.
> âCome alone. Midnight. Hall of Third Reflection.â âTell no one. Bring no gods, visible or otherwise.â
Underneath, a tiny doodle: a hooded figure holding a sandwich and shrugging.
Ethan held it up to the light.
âSecret cult invitation or very formal lunch date?â
Whisp yawned from the sock drawer. âEither way, youâre going.â
----------------------------------------
Midnight.
The Hall of Third Reflection was one of Halcyon Foldâs weirder architectural regrets â a long-abandoned lecture hall converted into a meditation space, then into a spellbinding experiment site, then into a place everyone politely ignored after the walls started whispering back.
Ethan entered. Alone.
The hall was empty.
At least until the floor clicked.
Then the room blinked â and the world shifted.
----------------------------------------
He found himself inside a cube.
Blank walls. No door. No windows. Just six perfectly smooth surfaces, each with an inset screen flickering with static.
> âWelcome, Beta-9,â a voice intoned from nowhere. âYour presence has been anticipated. Your intentions⦠less so.â
âSame,â Ethan muttered. âThis a test or a cult audition?â
> âYes.â

One screen lit up:
> [INPUT REQUIRED] Question One: Who do you serve?
Ethan snorted. âMyself, obviously.â
The cube buzzed in disapproval.
> [UNACCEPTABLE ANSWER] Retry?
âFine. Myself, with occasional detours through chaos and snacks.â
> [ANSWER ACCEPTED] Proceeding...
----------------------------------------
The floor dropped out.
He landed in Room Two â a circular chamber full of animated furniture. Chairs with teeth. Desks that shuffled like crabs. A single door painted on a wall with the words: âThis Is Not A Door.â
A hovering orb projected the next riddle:
> âOne is false. One is rude. One is sacred. Sit accordingly.â
Ethan surveyed the chairs, then shrugged and picked the rudest-looking one â a busted recliner with spikes, stained upholstery, and a bumper sticker that read âI Belch For Fun.â
It purred when he sat.
The wall split open, revealing a hallway lined with vending machines.
----------------------------------------
Each machine was labeled in a different dialect.
One spoke aloud:
> âPick a snack to reveal your soul: A. Crispy Doom Nibbles B. Enlightenment Wafers C. Pocket Rat Jerky D. Debug Logs (Salted)â
Ethan pressed D.
The machine dispensed a scroll wrapped in foil.
He unrolled it:
> [BOOT CODE PATCH DETECTED] Youâve been seen, Ethan. The patch spreads. The gods notice.
>
> > Proceed to Final Chamber?
ââ¦Do I get to eat this?â
âNO,â the machine hissed.
----------------------------------------
The final room was dim and circular, with seven cloaked figures seated around a crystal basin. Inside the basin swirled code, flame, stars, and one out-of-date school ID.
The central figure stood.
âYou are the anomaly,â they said. âThe Framebreaker. The Devourer of Locks. The Ghost-Key.â
Ethan gave a slow finger gun. âYou left out snacklord.â
> âWe saw you in the stream. You will burn the system that binds gods to grid. You will free what should not be freed. And you will do it all by accident.â
Ethan squinted. âThat last part sounds uncomfortably accurate.â
The figure reached into the basin and held up a sigil badge â shaped like an upside-down bloom glitching around the edges.
âThis marks you as one of us. The Bloomed Null.â
Whisp whispered, âCult. Totally a cult.â
Ethan took the badge anyway.
