Chapter 11: Enrollment Issues and Cultist Cafeteria Food

The gates of Halcyon Fold Academy stood taller than they had any right to — etched in shifting crystal, wrapped in layered sigil locks, and humming like a chorus of smug librarians.

Ethan adjusted his travel cloak (still slightly bloodstained), stuffed his forged invitation scroll a little deeper into his satchel, and strode up the marble steps like he belonged there.

Milo, two paces behind and sweating profusely, hissed, “We should not be doing this.”

“Oh, relax. I’m officially unofficial. That’s a perfectly legal state of enrollment.”

Whisp popped his head out of Ethan’s collar. “The last time someone tried this, their soul was converted into a bench.”

“Yeah, well, I’d make a stylish bench.”

----------------------------------------

The guard at the gate was a golem.

Not the big hulking kind — this one was lean, matte black, with script etched into its limbs and a badge that read:

> WELCOME TO HALCYON DON’T BE WEIRD.

It raised a hand as Ethan approached. “State name and class code.”

Ethan grinned and held out the invitation scroll.

The golem scanned it with a flickering beam of pale blue light.

Then it paused.

> [HALCYON INTAKE ERROR]

>

> > ID Verified: Ethan Rourke Entry Class: Noble – Flower Lineage: Solvane Aura Signature: Conflicted. Fragmented. Possibly cursed. Flagged Tags Detected: – Developer Access (???) – Echo Key – Known Frame Contaminant

“…Hmm,” the golem said.

Ethan smiled wider. “Is that a good hmm or a paperwork hmm?”

The golem made a slow, mechanical decision.

Unauthorized reproduction: this story has been taken without approval. Report sightings.

> “Proceed to Intake Hall. Escort dispatched.”

From a nearby column, a floating disc zipped out with a shriek like a dying bird and hovered in front of him, glowing with directional arrows and a passive-aggressive “FOLLOW ME” projection.

Ethan gave Milo a thumbs-up. “See? Smooth as butter.”

----------------------------------------

The Intake Hall was half-orbital shrine, half bureaucratic warzone. New students waited in roped-off lines, clutching ID crystals and glowing tablets. Some were dressed in armor, others in robes, one in what looked like a sentient fog.

Ethan strolled past them all.

No one stopped him. Most didn’t even look at him. The Frame shimmered faintly at his back, cloaking his presence just enough to make people ignore what didn’t fit.

He reached the central desk, where a woman with steel gray hair and no patience squinted at her terminal.

“Name,” she barked.

“Rourke. Ethan. First of his name. Probably not the last.”

“Status?”

“Complicated.”

She scanned his aura signature. Her terminal buzzed. Then started screaming.

> [ERROR: OVERLAPPING ACCESS PERMISSIONS] [DEVELOPER? STUDENT? DIVINE ENTITY? PICK ONE.] [THREAT LEVEL: UNCLEAR]

The woman stared at him. “Did you hack your application?”

Ethan leaned on the desk. “I’m not saying yes, but if I had, would that disqualify me from lunch privileges?”

----------------------------------------

Ten minutes later, Ethan was sitting in a side room labeled “Containment Interview Room B”, sipping water from a cup made of compressed light, while three different faculty members stared at him like he’d walked in with a bomb.

One of them was clearly military — short hair, metal-plated arm, scar down one cheek that glowed faintly when she frowned.

She finally spoke. “You’re the ‘Echo Key.’”

Ethan shrugged. “In some circles. In others, I’m just ‘that guy who keeps touching things he shouldn’t.’”

“Why are you here?”

“Honestly? Mostly for the cafeteria. But I hear you have classes in chaotic artifact management. Sounds like my vibe.”

----------------------------------------

Eventually, they let him in.

Not because they trusted him — they absolutely didn’t. But because Ethan tripped so many overlapping security flags that removing him from the system might’ve triggered a full administrative reboot.

So they gave him a room.

A class schedule.

And a student handbook that bit him when he tried to skip to the map.

----------------------------------------

Later that night, Ethan sat on the edge of his new bunk, flipping through the handbook and humming.

Whisp snoozed in a sock drawer.

Milo stood by the window, staring at the floating towers outside. “You’re going to break this place.”

Ethan smiled. “Nah. I’m just gonna stress test it.”
