Chapter 1: Boot Sequence

Chapter 1: Boot Sequence

The boy on the slab had been dead for three hours.

Wrapped in silver-threaded prayer cloth, body marked with house sigils and death rites, he looked peaceful. If you ignored the bruises. The cracked ribs. The slightly swollen temple. Little details, swept under the rug like everything else House Thornecairn didn’t want to explain.

The incense burned low. The mortician priest was late. The servants had cleared out, whispering that the boy's soul never made it to the veil.

They were right.

Because now, the corpse coughed.

And sat up.

Ethan Rourke inhaled like someone had just turned on a machine he didn’t understand. He didn’t scream — just groaned like a man waking from a long, stupid nap. His eyes fluttered open, and the first thing he saw was a cracked stone ceiling and a single flickering spiritual lantern.

The second thing was the UI hovering over his vision, glitching like a half-installed patch.

"...Well, shit," Ethan croaked.

He was in a body that wasn’t his, with bones that ached like they’d been used for target practice, and a head full of memories that weren’t entirely his own — though the stuffy formal tone and desperate loneliness were unmistakable.

The kid had been bullied to death. By family.

And now he was here.

----------------------------------------

Ethan swung his legs off the slab and winced. He looked down at himself: smaller. Younger. Thirteen, maybe fourteen at best. Pale skin, faint bruise on his ribs, ceremonial robe hanging loosely on his thin shoulders.

And in his hood?

> “You’re alive. Disappointing.”

Ethan glanced sideways. A tiny white mouse with too-big ears was curled in the shadow of his collarbone, licking its paw with slow disdain.

"Whisp," Ethan said, grinning through cracked lips. "Good to see you too."

The mouse flicked its tail. "Your previous soulprint was easier to work with."

"Yeah, well, this version of me is a bit more fun."

----------------------------------------

The door creaked open.

Ethan flopped back onto the slab, arms neatly folded. A pair of servants entered, saw him, and immediately screamed.

----------------------------------------

FIFTEEN MINUTES LATER...

Ethan sat on a velvet bench in the receiving hall of House Thornecairn, sipping weak tea while wrapped in a blanket. He was freshly bathed, people felt sorry for him, and he was definitely being watched.

Across from him sat Lady Maedra Thornecairn, all frost and fine silk. Her smile was pure politics, but her eyes were knives.

"You remember who you are?" she asked.

Ethan nodded. "Mostly. Enough. I know I’m your late husband’s son. Adopted, technically. Not quite common, not quite noble. A classic social limbo. Very popular these days."

"You were sick. Delirious," she said. "You collapsed during training."

> [Debug Note: Cause of death: Blunt force trauma. Training spear. Intent flagged: Malicious.]

Ethan sipped his tea. "Mmm. That explains the dent in my soul."

Maedra’s smile cracked for half a second.

Behind her, Vorran and Seressa stood like matching carved statues. Seressa's eye twitched every time Ethan looked at her.

Especially when he smiled.

----------------------------------------

AN HOUR LATER...

He was alone in his late father’s study — a dusty room they’d never bothered to clean out. He opened drawers, shifted paintings, checked under the floorboards.

And there it was.

A hidden safe. Spiritual lock. Noble-encoded.

And a scroll inside.

> [Item Detected: Halcyon Fold Admission Contract]

> Applicant: Seressa Thornecairn

> Validity: 3 days

> Entry Tier: Noble Lineage - Flower Class

> Status: Unsealed

Ethan stared at it. Then grinned.

"Whisp," he whispered, holding up the scroll. "How fast can you patch this to say Ethan?"

The mouse looked up from a half-eaten spiritual talisman. "Fast enough. Do you want the house crest too?"

"Hell yes. Make me super illegal."

----------------------------------------

THAT NIGHT...

Ethan stood at the estate gate, wearing a traveler’s cloak two sizes too big and a satchel filled with stolen ration charms, one mystery talisman from his dead dad’s desk, and Seressa’s rewritten invitation.

He turned to look back at the estate one last time.

> "You sure you want to leave?" Whisp asked, poking his head from Ethan’s pocket.

"Yep. This place is awful. The people are mean. And it smells weird."

He walked out the gate whistling a cheerful tune.

> "Where are we going?"

> "School, apparently."

> "You stole your stepsister’s identity."

> "Nah. I upgraded it."

> "You’ll be hunted."

> "Again, Whisp."

Ethan smiled as the city faded behind him and the wilds opened before him.

Let the fun begin.
