A Subtle Scheme

The night passed in a blur of exhaustion. After Lusav's departure, my thoughts were consumed by the events of the day. I fell asleep almost immediately, seeking solace in the comfort of my bed. The following morning, as sunlight filtered through my curtains, I awoke with a renewed sense of purpose. Today would be crucial for the subtle schemes I had in mind.

The manor was already bustling with activity. Servants hurried through the halls, each absorbed in their tasks. Among them, Lily was poised to begin her mission. I had instructed her to find ways to isolate Jannat, and I watched from a distance, noting her every move.

Lily's first move was deceptively simple but effective. During breakfast, as the staff gathered to serve the meal, Jannat, in her usual clumsy manner, accidentally broke a set of valuable plates. The loud crash of porcelain hitting the floor caught everyone's attention.

Lily wasted no time. As she swept up the shattered pieces, she made sure her voice carried. "It seems Jannat has a knack for breaking things," she said with a hint of scorn. "She's so fortunate to be Lady Helen's personal maid, yet she seems careless with her duties. One might think she's more skilled at making a mess than being a proper maid."

The other servants exchanged glances, their once-sympathetic expressions now tinged with disapproval. The seed of doubt had been planted, and Jannat's position began to waver.

Later in the day, Lily continued her strategy. In the servants' quarters, she gathered a few maids who were preparing the afternoon tea. The conversation took a deliberate turn. "Have you all noticed how Jannat is never satisfied with the food?" Lily remarked, her tone casual but pointed. "She's always demanding special dishes and complaining if they're not up to her taste. It's as though she forgets she's just a maid."

One of the older maids, Margery, sighed and shook her head. "I used to sympathize with her. She works hard, but lately, she's been making such a fuss. It's like she thinks she's entitled to special treatment."

Another maid, Clara, nodded in agreement. "I thought she deserved the position, but now I'm not so sure. She's become quite demanding and careless. It's no wonder Lady Helen looks exhausted. To think she was supposed to have a reliable maid."

Lily's words struck a chord. "Indeed," she said. "It's a shame how Jannat has turned out. Lady Helen deserves better. She's always been so kind and understanding, and this is how she's repaid. It's hard to believe she has to put up with such inefficiency."

The murmurs among the servants grew louder. The once-sympathetic view of Jannat was giving way to a more critical perspective. Lily's manipulation was carefully executed, and it was starting to take effect.

Meanwhile, Lily kept a keen eye on Jannat's activities. She noticed Jannat making her way to the tailor's quarters where a spy dresser had arrived. This dresser, tasked with preparing a dress for me, was noticeably nervous. She was aware that I knew of her true role as a spy, forgiven but still under scrutiny.

I had decided to test the dresser's loyalty further. As she presented herself for the fitting, she greeted me with a forced smile. "Lady Helen, you look absolutely radiant today," she said, though her voice trembled slightly. "For the prince's visit, I think a blue dress would be ideal. It symbolizes purity and innocence, which suits the occasion perfectly."

I met her gaze steadily. "Thank you for your suggestion," I replied, my tone firm. "However, I prefer a bold gold dress. I want to project power and confidence, not just innocence. The prince should see me as a strong and assertive figure."

The dresser's eyes widened slightly at my request, but she quickly composed herself. "Of course, Lady Helen. I will make the necessary adjustments."

As the fitting began, Duke Mackil entered the room with his usual warmth. His presence was always a comforting reminder of my family's unwavering support. He greeted me with a loving smile. "Ah, Helen, my dear," he said, his voice filled with genuine concern. "How are you this morning? I hope everything is going well."

I returned his smile. "I'm well, Father. Just preparing for the upcoming visit. How are you?"

Duke Mackil chuckled softly, his eyes twinkling with pride. "I'm always in good spirits when I see you. You look more radiant every day."

The dresser, clearly uncomfortable in the presence of Duke Mackil, shifted nervously. He acknowledged her with a polite nod. "And you must be the tailor. I trust you're preparing something splendid for my daughter?"

The dresser quickly nodded. "Yes, Your Grace. I'm honored to be working on a dress for Lady Helen. We've been discussing options to ensure it's perfect for the occasion."

Duke Mackil turned his attention back to me, his expression softening. "Helen, my dear, don't overwork yourself. It's important to enjoy the preparations too."

I nodded, appreciating his concern. "I'm managing everything well, Father. Your support means the world to me."

As Duke Mackil left, the fitting continued, and Lily stood beside me, her expression unreadable. After a moment, she leaned in and whispered, "My lady, Jannat has been trying to get in touch with the dresser. She's waiting outside right now."

I glanced discreetly toward the door and saw Jannat standing by, her posture tense as she peered inside. I turned back to the dresser, who looked apprehensive. "You dare not mention that you've been caught," I instructed firmly. "Play along and let me know what Jannat says when you come to deliver the dress in two days."

The dresser nodded, her eyes betraying a mix of fear and resolve. "Yes, Lady Helen. I will follow your instructions."

I allowed the dresser to take refreshments served by Jannat while all the maids, under Lily's watchful eye, escorted me to the dining room for my meal. The atmosphere was filled with hushed conversations and the clinking of silverware as the servants carried out their duties.

Two days passed in a flurry of activity. Each night, Lusav reported to me about the mall's affairs, ensuring that all was progressing according to plan. His updates were thorough, detailing every small shift and change. I listened carefully, weighing each piece of information with keen interest.

The manor's servants, meanwhile, were growing increasingly vocal about Jannat. As the days wore on, their dissatisfaction became evident. In the servants' quarters, the mood was tense.

"I used to think Jannat was just having a rough patch," Margery said one afternoon, her voice tinged with frustration. "But now, it's clear she's been a poor influence. The way she's handled her duties is just unacceptable."

Clara nodded vigorously. "I'm really regretting ever supporting her. We all got sent for extra work because of her inefficiency. It's not fair. Lady Helen deserves better."

Another maid, Sophie, chimed in, her tone sympathetic. "I feel so sorry for Lady Helen. She's been so gracious, and yet she's had to deal with such a careless maid. It's disgraceful."

The conversation was a reflection of the growing sentiment among the servants. They began to see Jannat in a new light, their previous sympathy for her quickly eroding.

As the day of the prince's visit approached, I wondered which of the two princes would arrive and how the interactions would unfold. More importantly, I awaited the dresser's report on Jannat's behavior and any insights she could provide.

Finally, the day came when the dresser returned with the dress. I met her in the fitting room, eager to hear what she had learned. The dress, a stunning shade of gold, was draped across a mannequin, its fabric shimmering in the light. It was the epitome of elegance and power just as I wanted it to be.

The dresser approached with a nervous smile. "Lady Helen, the dress is ready. I hope it meets your expectations."

As the manor buzzed with preparations for the prince's arrival, I anticipated the revelations and the critical moments that would shape the future. The intricate dance of deception and loyalty continued, and I was ready to navigate the complexities with both grace and determination.
