"Melody!" Scott whisper yelled catching Mel's attention as she sat down in Mr.Harris's class dreading another day with the teacher who seemed to now hate her and since Isaac Lahey was now not a person of interest it looked like Melody would finally have an actual lab partner.
"Oh, hey Scott." Melody stopped turning around seeing Scott's panicked look.
"Derek is not gonna kill her without proof." Scott whispered back to a freaking out Stiles.
"Wait kill? What's wrong?" Mel frowned furrowing her brows at the pair.
"We think Derek thinks Lydia is the Kanima." Scott answered before looking to Stiles.
"All right, so he tests her like he did with Jackson, right? But when and where?" Stiles said trying to force down his panic.
"I think here and now." Scott gulped looking to the front of the class room where Issac Lahey and Erica Reyes sauntered in, faces both plastered with smirks as they took in the class. Melody couldn't help but grimace at the matching leather jackets they sported as she quickly glanced over before turning back to the boys.
"Melody, keep an eye on Lydia. She's not the kanima, they will kill her." Stiles whispered urgently before Harris started talking interrupting them.
Melody stopped short, Derek wouldn't actually kill the girl would he? The soft guy she talked to in the woods definitely didn't seem like the type but maybe the alpha male act wasn't just an act.
"Einstein once said, "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; And I'm not sure about the universe." I myself have encountered infinite stupidity. So to combat the plague of ignorance in my class, you're going to combine efforts through a round of group experiments." Mr.Harris explained starting the lesson as Issac sat down beside Melody and took her in not even bothering to listen to the cranky chemistry teacher.
"Let's see if two heads are indeed better than one. Or in Mr. Stilinski's case, less than one. Erica, you take the first station. You'll start with -" Mr. Harris froze with a scowl seeing all the boys hands shoot up at the chance to sit with the newly changed girl making Melody force down the urge to roll her eyes.
The girl was seriously flaunting her newfound confidence,Melody thought as she snuck a glance over. The girl had on a tight tank top that barely covered her bright red bra with even tighter skinny jeans that Melody couldn't imagine wearing. She hated skinny jeans, even if mom jeans weren't the style at least were comfortable.
"I didn't ask for volunteers. Put your hormonal little hands down. Start with Mr. McCall." Harris snapped making Scott change seats before looking to Melody and letting them stay together since they hadn't worked together before.
"All right, next two." He moved on sorting the class.
"So you're the mermaid?" Issac said to her after Harris finally stopped talking making her clench her jaw.
"And you're a wolf boy, now are you going to help me or just focus on staring at Lydia Martin." Melody sassed straightening her back before turning to him.
To her surprise she looked up and saw Issac staring at her instead.
Melody felt time slow as there eyes met, she wasn't sure exactly what caught her attention first but, wow, this boy wore the ocean in his eyes, a sparkling gray-blue, ever shifting, and she recognized it in him immediately, knew before he said another word that he was as dangerous as he was beautiful. A dangerous current Melody could see herself getting caught in.
"She's not the one I'd like to stare at." Issac flirted tilting his head down making a stray golden brown curl fall in his face.
"You realize how creepy that sounded right?" Melody snorted shyly looking away as a blush rose to her freckle covered cheeks.
"Come one Little Mermaid, you thought it was cute." Issac smirked at her rosy cheeks watching as the girl started the experiment.
"So you're adding mind reader to your list of new found abilities because flirting definitely isn't one of them." Mel smiled at her paper not looking up as she sassed him again, a little proud of herself at the quip.
"Your heart beat says other wise, Ariel." Issac whispered as he lowered down to her height.
"It's Melody." She snapped leaning away as she tried to focus on the assignment not liking his stupid fish themed nicknames.
"I was close then wasn't I?" Issac smiled making Melody's stomach fill with butterflies as she dared a glance up again.
"I'm Issac. Nice to finally meet you, Melody." Issac said lowering down to her height again making her force down the feeling of goosebumps.
Mel scoffed before picking up the next vile.
"Are you going to help then Issac or just stare?" She asked daring to look up into his eyes and her breath caught. Stupid blue eyes, she mentally cursed at herself.
"Like what you see?" Issac boasted fixing his leather jacket slightly making her roll her eyes.
"I don't like cocky guys." Melody muttered forcing herself to look back to her work.
"Your heart beat says otherwise Princess." Issac smirked at her again.
"Just because I like your eyes doesn't mean I like your attitude or you. Like I said, I don't like guys who are full of themselves and act like a tough guy ." Melody sassed raising her brows at the boy who leaned against the table with a grin.
"How would you know if it's an act." Issac questioned with a daring grin.
"I'm pretty good at reading people, that and the fact that jacket looks like you borrowed it from your big brother." Melody sassed back gently plopping the blueish liquid into another beaker as she spoke.
"Is that a mermaid power?" Issac asked referring to her earlier comment making her let out a breathless laugh.
"Nope, I'm just good at reading people, Issac." Melody replied softly as a goodbye watching Issac's face fall from its cocky cover as Mr.Harris yelled out to switch releasing her from the verbal war with the wolf and his stupidly gorgeous eyes.
Harris yelled out again as Allison and Lydia hadn't moved yet. "Let's go, girls. Next station!" Melody turned around eying the pair with a frown as she focused her hearing over there.
"Trust me, all right?" Allison pleaded as a very confused Lydia got up.
Erica pulled back the chair beside Melody with a loud scraping noise that made her finch since she wasn't paying attention.
"Hello Mermaid" Erica boasted sitting down with a grin making her groan and throw her head back slightly.
"Not you too, can't we just be friends. I won't call you a dog, you don't have to call me a fish or whatever other nicknames your little group has thought up since yesterday." Melody sighed rolling her eyes at her next partner.
"I can do that, only because you were actually nice to me before." Erica smiled with a shrug making her relax.
"Oh thank god, i seriously don't think i could handle another sassing war." Melody replied relieved looking to the girl with a smile.
"You're not going to tell me to leave Lydia alone?" Erica frowned as she put in the next chemical.
"I would but I have a feeling you wouldn't listen to me since really it's Derek who is ordering you too, plus I was being serious, I want to try to stay out of this all." She shrugged at the girl as she read the next steps in the lab since it seemed Erica wouldn't be helping.
"Isn't she your friend?" Erica raised her brows nodding to the red head.
"Yes, but like I said, I'm trying to stay out of club wolf and it's drama. Plus I'm sure Scott and friends can keep her safe." She sighed being honest about her feelings.
Erica didn't get a chance to reply before Harris was yelling to switch again.
"If you're trying to test my patience, Mr. Stilinski, I guarantee it'll be a failing grade." Harris shouted again as Melody moved over to where a short slightly creepy brown haired boy sat with a too wide smile at her appearance. He seemed slightly familiar but for the life of her she winced as she couldn't remember him.
"Hi, I'm Matt, we have English together." He said taking in her confused face at who he was.
"Oh sorry, I still can't remember everyone." She offered in a small apology as they began to work.
"It's all good, how do you like Beacon Hills?" Matt pushed mostly ignoring the project and smiling at Melody.
Does anyone here actually care about school? Mel groaned mentally as she tried to get the lab finished.
"It's okay." Mel offered with a lazy shrug not really wanting to discuss moving cities at the moment.
"Yeah it sucks but sometimes it's good." Matt replied stirring the chemicals in and actually helping as Mel softly nodded back.
"Time. If you've catalyzed the reaction correctly, you should now be looking at a crystal. Now for the part of that last experiment I'm sure you'll all enjoy - You can eat it." Harris yelled out alerting the class and Melody frowned not really wanting to eat the crystal so she looked to Matt.
"You can go for it, I'm not hungry." She offered when suddenly Scott yelled from across the room.
"Lydia!"
"What?" Lydia stopped her movements as she held the crystal up to her lips not even noticing the slimy substance atop it as she looked at Scott full of confusion.
Scott winced now seeing the whole class staring muttered a quick "Nothing." getting the attention of him as Lydia ate the crystal and.. nothing happened. Melody's heart dropped, Lydia Martin was the Kanima.
Derek was going to kill Lydia Martin.
Addie and Lydia had become her friends, and Melody didn't want Addie to go through the grief that was loosing a family member, so Mel made a probably- definitely a stupid desision but noneless she made it. Melody found Scott as the bell rung following the group into an empty room.
"I want to help." Melody said as Stiles closed the door and she anxiously played with her mother's necklace.
"I thought you didn't want anything to do with the supernatural." Scott furrowed his thick brows her.
"I do, i don't, I didn't, ugh. Look, the twins are my friends and I don't want to watch Addie go though the pain and grief of loosing someone. That kind of pain," Mel swallowed thickly "that pain changes you, leaves a mark." She bit her lip forcing back the thoughts of her family.
"Wait how are you going to help? No offence." Allison shook her head and Melody looked to the boys, her face scrunched up in confusion.
"You didn't tell her?" She asked looking to Scott who shrugged lightly like what he said next didn't make him her favourite wolf.
"It wasn't my secret to share."
"Uh wow, Thank you, that uh- means a lot." she genuinely smiled at the wolf.
Scott gave her a smile in return before she turned to Allison.
"Promise you won't tell your family? or you know, Kill me?" She winced feeling slightly bad for the question but in honesty it was a valid one since she came from a hunting family, werewolf boyfriend or not.
"I promise." Allison replied warily shifting her eyes to Scott who nodded.
"I'm a Mermaid." she said watching her eyes go wide. "whoa, really? That's- Cool."
"So what's happening?" Melody asked shifting the conversion back to the issue at hand.
"Derek's outside waiting for Lydia." Scott revealed
"Waiting to kill her?" Allison stammered in shock.
"If he thinks she's the kanima, then yes, especially after what happened at the pool."Â Scott stated clenching his jaw.
"It's not her." Stiles said forcefully shaking his head at them.
"Stiles, she didn't pass the test, man. Nothing happened." Scott sighed looking to his best friend.
"No, it can't be her." Stiles insisted again.
"Maybe there's a reason she didn't pass, if Stiles is right and she isn't a giant murdering lizard that is." Melody offered her face scrunched up in thought.
"It doesn't matter, because Derek thinks it's her. So either we can convince him that he's wrong, or we've got to figure out a way to protect her." Allison forced looking to Melody and the boys.
"Well, I really don't think he's gonna do anything here, not at school." Scott reasoned back.
"What about after school? What if we can prove that Derek's wrong?" Stiles stammered scratching his head.
"By three o'clock?" Melody questioned with wide eyes.
"There could be something in the bestiary." Allison tired to reason.
"Oh, you mean the 900 - page book written in Archaic Latin that none of us can read? Good luck with that." Stiles scoffed.
"Actually, I think I know someone who might be able to translate it." Allison smirked making Melody raise her brows wondering who it was.
"Uh, I can talk to Derek, maybe convince him to give us a chance to prove that it's not her. But if anything happens, you guys let me handle it, okay?" Scott rubbed his neck before looking to the group.
"What does that mean?" Allison said slightly angry at the slight insinuation she couldn't handle herself.
"That you can't heal like I do. I just don't want you to get hurt." he sighed looking to his girlfriend.
"I can protect myself. What? Did something else happen?" Allison forced grabbing her purse and flicking out a mini crossbow making Melody's eyes widen at what she hid in her school bag.
"Not all of us can heal like you Scott but that doesn't make use powerless or weak, we can handle ourselves." Mel said looking to Scott.
Scott sighed. "I just don't want you guys getting hurt. Seriously, if anything goes wrong, you call me, okay? I - I don't care if your dad finds out. Call, text, scream, yell, whatever. I'll hear you and I'll find you as fast as I can. We have until 3:00." Scott held her hands in a loving moment Melody felt like she shouldn't be looking at when suddenly an arrow wizzed by almost taking out Scotts head as he swerved away.
Everyone's heads whipped to Stiles who was holding Allison mini crossbow that she had disregarded on the nearby desk with a sheepish smile before putting it down gently. "Ah. Sorry. Sorry. Sensitive trigger on that."
"Seriously?" Mel sighed before moving to follow Scott when he stopped looking at her.
"What are you doing?" Scott asked
"I'm coming, I can try to talk to Derek, if you don't get through to him maybe I can."
"How?" he asked walking beside her as she pasted him not waiting for all his questions.
"Derek and I have both lost family, he knows that pain, maybe reminding him of it will change his mind so another family doesn't have to go through that." she said speed walking to the nearby doors.
Scott shouted after a familiar looking boy as the pair walked into the field. " I want to talk to Derek!"
"Talk to me." the boy said and Melody quickly realized this was the third pack member, Boyd.
"I don't want to fight." Scott shook his head.
"Good, 'cause I'm twice the size of you."
"The bigger they are, the harder they fall." Melody bit out making Boyd glare at her.
Scott ignored her comment completely as he replied. "True. Really, really true. But wanna know what I think? I'm twice as fast."
"She failed the test." Derek said appearing behind the boy slightly shocked at the mermaid standing there.
Scott shook his head at Derek. "Yeah, which doesn't prove anything. Lydia's different."
"I know, at night she turns into a homicidal walking snake."
"I'm not going to let you k*ll her." Scott growled out.
"Who said I was gonna do it?" Derek shrugged as if he wasn't talking about killing a girl making her frown at the man. He was so different than the other night. It made her wonder what version was actually him. She had a feeling it wasn't this.
"Whether or not it's by your hand you're still the one deciding to kill her. Her blood will be on your hands." Mel exclaimed locking eyes with the alpha.
"I don't know why you think you have to protect everyone now, Scott, but even so, Lydia has killed people and she's gonna do it again, and next time, it's gonna be one of us." Derek said ignoring her making her grind her teeth.
"What if you're wrong?" Scott forced.
"She was bitten by an Alpha. It's her." he replied
"You saw that thing up close. You know it's not like us." He reasoned shaking his head as he pinned the alpha down with his eyes.
"But it is! We're all shapeshifters. You don't know what you're dealing with. It happens rarely and it happens for a reason." Derek exclaimed.
"What reason?" Melody questioned crossing her arms
"Sometimes the shape you take reflects the person that you are. Even Stiles calls her cold - blooded." Derek recited looking to her and back to Scott.
"Well, what if she's immune? What if she's got something inside of her that makes her immune to the bite, which is why she didn't get paralyzed?" Scott asked remembering Melody's comment from earlier.
"No one's immune! I've never seen it or heard of it. It's n - it's never happened." the alpha explained
"What about Jackson?" Scott asked.
"That's why you tested him, isn't it? Because you gave him what he wanted, didn't you?" Scott realized his eyes widening.
"Scott - " Derek said almost warning as he clenched his jaw.
"Peter said the bite either kills you or turns you. You were probably hoping that he would die. But nothing happened, right? And you have no idea why, do you?" he remembered looking to him.
"No." Derek bit out.
"Well, we have a theory. Lydia's immune, and somehow she passed it on to Jackson. You know I'm right." Scott said getting in the Alphas face as Melody winced hoping Derek would remain calm.
"No!" the hale yelled
So much for calm. Melody frowned
"You cannot do this!" her friend yelled back.
"Look, I can't let her live! You should have known that!" he said making Mels heart drop.
"I was hoping I would convince you, but then - I wasn't counting on it. Your turn" Scott said knowingly before nodding to her.
"Go" Melody whispered before she stepped up blocking Derek.
"What happened to stay out of this all?" Derek nodded to her.
"Hard to do when my friends are threatened. Plus, I'm getting the feeling that is going to be very hard to do." Melody sighed before hardening and stepping toward him.
"You can't kill her." She pinned him in place with her eyes.
"She's murdering people!" Derek said pointing to the school where her friend was for emphasis.
"So you decide to kill her instead of helping her?" She retorted making Derek scoff at the young girl.
"You know the pain of loosing family Derek, you know how it feels to wake up in the morning feeling empty because you're missing your other half. You lost more than just your sister in that fire, your family was taken away from you, your home and now you're about to do the same thing to Addie Martin and her family. Can you seriously look at me in the eye and say you're okay with doing that to another person?" Melody asked watching Derek falter as her words hit home not noticing as the duo of werewolves walked up behind her listening in to her speech.
"The Kanima is doing the same things to other families." Derek reasoned making Melody stepped closer.
"So instead of helping her stop hurting people, you decide to shift that pain to her family." She said softly shaking her head before continuing.
"Look Derek, I'm not going to stand here and pretend like I know you after talking to you twice, but, I can't say I look at you and see anything other than a scared man who is lost without his family because that's who I see who I look in the mirror. You're better than this Alpha act bullshit. If you think you're making your family proud like this, I think I'd bet you're not. The choice is yours, but either way I've made mine. I won't be a part of tearing apart families even if i'm protecting a murderous lizard girl." Melody said watching as the man furrowed his brows with slightly glossed eyes.
"They aren't here." Issac spoke up behind Melody making the pair break eye contact as she looked to Issac finding his softened eyes already looking at her.
"Good." Melody retorted looking to Derek once again before turning around to leave and meet up with the rest leaving behind a slightly shocked alpha and pack from the girls speech.
Melody made sure to be extra carful as she drove to Scotts house from the directions he sent making sure no-one was following and soon enough she was parking her jeep besides Stiles's in the drive way.
"Hey!" Melody yelled as she saw Stiles moving to shut the door, and saw his relief at her appearance.
"Oh thank god you're here." Stiles told her letting her inside as Lydia frowned.
"If we're studying at Scott's house, then where's Scott?"
"Meeting us here, I think. I hope." He sighed and Melody toned out the couple beside her as she watched Stiles frantically lock the door.
"Uh, there's been a few break - ins around the neighbourhood." Stiles said in response to the groups confused glances before he spotted and chair and quickly moved it under the door knob.
"And a murder. Yeah, it was bad." He rubbed his face anxiously when he saw them staring at him like he'd grown two heads.
"Yeah.." Melody muttered nodding slowly at Stiles.
Jackson suddenly spoke up asking Lydia to follow him to talk as he made his way up stairs.
"Seriously? What is going on with everyone?" Lydia shook her head looking back at the door and her friends before following.
Stiles looked to Melody full of relief "Well now at least we got one mermaid, a hunter and two semi competent humans guarding one mass murdering red headed lizard girl."
"Way to put things into prospective there Stiles." The mermaid chuckled before continuing "I tried to get through to Derek, but I don't know if it worked."
"Uh, I'd say that it didnt." Stiles said moving to look through the window at Derek's pack now standing outside.
"Great." Mel shook her head. "Move back, I can do better than block the door with a chair, although I don't think it'll hold them off long."
Stiles moved away quickly looking to the girl confused as she lifted her hand freezing and doorknob and locks.
"I'm calling Scott." Allison stated quickly dialing her boyfriend and Melody listened in.
"It's me." She said as soon as he picked up making Scott panic.
"What's wrong."
" You need to get here now. Right now." Allison paced.
"Okay, I'm leaving now. On my way." Scott said hanging up but instead of putting it away Allison paused tapping her finger against her mobile making Stiles pause.
"Oh, jeez. What are you doing?"
Allison looked up to the boy and the to Melody. "I think - I think I have to call my dad."
"The crazy hunter that will kill anything supernatural?!" Mel exclaimed at the same time Stiles yelled frantically shaking his head.
"No, but if he finds you here - you and Scott -Â and Melody!" He exclaimed pointing to the mermaid beside him.
"I know. But what are we supposed to do? They're not here to scare us, okay? They're here to kill Lydia!" She reasoned
"If you call him, we are screwed in a much worse way! Derek won't do anything until Scott shows I bet you." Melody took the girls phone putting it on a nearby table as Stiles went to look out the window again.
"I got an idea. Just shoot one of 'em." Stiles stated pointing out the window.
"Are you serious?" Allison questioned looking to the boy shocked he'd tell her to do something like that.
"We told Scott we could protect ourselves, so let's do it. Or at least give it a shot, right?" Mel sighed not entirely enjoying the violent idea.
Allison nodded "Okay." Making her tense a bit more.
"Look, they don't think we're gonna fight, so if one of them gets hit, I guarantee they'll take off. So just shoot one of 'em." Stiles offered
"Which one?" Melody asked looking to the spastic boy who was basically vibrating as he stood at the door looking at them.
"Uh - Derek. Yeah, shoot him, preferably in the head." He nodded to Allison.
"If Scott was able to catch an arrow, Derek definitely can." Melody shook her head at the two.
"She's got a point, ah, Okay, uh, just shoot one of the other three then." He shrugged at Allison who was looking out still.
"You mean two." Allison replied making them still.
"No, I mean three!" Stiles rushed to the window along with Melody.
"Where the hell is Isaac?" Melody whispered yelled at the pair when suddenly Allison was attacked from behind as she moved to shoot.
Issac grabbed Allison's shooting hand taking her weapon away before shoving her to the ground harshly.
The wolf then moved to push Stiles down completely ignoring the mermaid before he turned to her stopping in his tracks.
"Why don't you just let me by? It would be a shame to make me hurt such a pretty girl." Issac sighed and Melody replied by magically flinging the boy across the room like it was nothing making him groan in pain as he hit the wall.
Allison shot up and Melody quickly nodding to her to go upstairs.
"Find Lydia, I got this."
Allison ran upstairs but not before grabbing her bow and giving the girl a look.
"Don't mess with the mermaid, noted." Issac said rubbing his head watching as the girl sauntered over to stand in front of him.
"You know, here I thought mermaids were the peaceful ones." Issac snickered as he moved to stand and Melody made him kneel by pulling her fisted hand down making him groan hard enough she thought he got the point and released him.
"We usually are, but peaceful doesn't mean helpless." Mel quipped back walking to stand in front of him, "Gonna stand down?"
"Nah." He shrugged with a smirk and Melody completely regretted letting her magic down when he lunged making her duck before gathering a strong wind forcing him to collide with the countertop making a loud snap echo from him.
"Sounded like that hurt." She sassed seeing Issac groan and Scott raced into the house stopping to look at them in shock, "Where is Allison?"
"Upstairs!" Melody shouted racing behind him.
"Stiles, it's here!" Allison shouted from upstairs making the two run up the stairs.
"You didn't really think that would work, did you?" Erica laughed as the pair entered upstairs and a loud bang came soon after.
"Actually I did. I thought you were psychic, bitch!" Allison smirked leaning down to Erica's face when Melody cheered "Damn, point Allie!"
"Come-on." Scott nodded after shaking his head at her antics throwing the paralyzed wolf over his shoulder and walking down stairs.
Melody, catching onto what the boy was going to do, turned to the two behind her nodding to Issac's still slightly broken body with a wince. "Guys, can you help me lift him?"
Not surprisingly the three struggled with Issac considering none of them had supernatural strength and no offence to Stiles but he didn't have a lot of strength, so the group ended up pulling him out of the house almost dropping him a couple times.
"Gosh, watch his head Stiles! He's can't injure that more." Mel snickered as Issac glared at her joke when Stiles almost rammed his head into the side of the wall.
The group made it outside to where Derek and Boyd were standing and tossed the wolves at their feet, well for them it wasn't a toss as much as it was a drop.
Derek looked from the unmoving teenagers to the group in front of him as he realized something.
"I think I'm finally getting why you keep refusing me, Scott. You're not an omega, you're already an Alpha of your own pack. But you know you can't beat me." He smirked
"Maybe not, but I can hold you off until the cops get here." Scott grinned as sirens slowly made their way towards the group and Derek's face dropped.
"Get them out of here."Â Derek told Boyd who rolled his eyes when suddenly the kanima jumped out of the top floor of Scott's house alerting the group outside. The kanima pinned them with its yellow eyes before letting out a screaming hizz and ran off.
"Would someone please tell me what the hell is going on?" Lydia yelled as her heels clicked on the porch making everyone take in a deep breath.
"It's Jackson." Scott stated
"Holy shit." Melody sighed.
