"A freaking LIZARD"

If someone was to ask Melody how she ended up sitting at the lacrosse game in the cold above the slightly creepy principal and the Argents, she'd have one word, Addie. What could Melody say, Addie Martin was a force of nature.

Melody however had found solace in Melissa McCall who luckily had ended up sitting beside her on the packed bleachers.

"I knew I should have brought a warmer jacket." Allison suddenly shivered beside her grandfather who quickly moved to take his coat off. "You're cold, here take my coat."

Allison balked "Are you sure?"

"Oh, yeah." he smiled at his granddaughter

"Thanks." she muttered under the sudden cries as a player got hit.

" Good God, is it always this violent?" her grandfather exclaimed with wide eyes as Mel shuttered.

" I can't feel my legs. Ahhhh!" The player shouted.

"He belong to you?" a voice said from beside Melissa catching her attention, the boy was dark brown haired and around Scotts height holding a fancy camera.

"No, mine is still on the field. While I'm here really wishing that he would've stuck with tennis! You the year book photographer?" Scotts mom questioned with a slight laugh.

"No, I, uh, I just take pictures." the boy replied making Melody frown.

"Just lacrosse, or other things?" Melissa asked again.

"Anything that catches my eye." the boy replied looking behind to Melody for a little too long making her uncomfortable.

Melody forced her attention back on the game as coach checked on Danny, Melody was close enough she didn't really need to worry about her advanced hearing as coach held up two fingers to Danny.

"How many fingers am I holding up?"

"Four." Danny answered rubbing his head.

"Say two." Coach forced with a wide smile

"Uh, Two." Danny replied frowning at the man.

"Perfect, get out there, come on. Get out there and have a stick." he said enthusiastically hitting Danny's poor back.

" We're still short one player, Coach." another player shouted over the crowd.

" Where's Stilinski? Where's Stilinski?" Coach shouted turning his head around in search of the scrawny boy and Melody rolled her eyes, the boy had been a pain in her back all day after he got his head stuck on her being some sort of supernatural. It was slowly becoming blazingly obvious to her that something was happening in this town, heck maybe werewolves were a thing.

" You! You! You play lacrosse?" Coach asked catching eyes with a tall muscular boy standing with Erica.

"Uh - uh. Derek won't like this." Erica warned the boy who handed her his coat.

"Yeah. But I will." the boy grinned running to get a stick and a Jersey as Erica rolled her eyes.

" Oh, ha, ha, ha! We got ourselves a player!" Coach boasted.

"So how have you been with the move?" Melissa asked Melody her voice laced with motherly concern.

"Ah, Its been hard.." Mel shrugged, apparently Melissa McCall frequently worked and was friends with her uncle who had been telling her how worried he was about her. Melody had been pretty silent when it came to visiting at dinners mostly letting Rain talk to get the attention of her.

"You know you can always come over to my house if you ever need, I know your uncle can suck at talking so if you need someone your more than welcome to come talk to me, my door is always open." Melissa offered and Melody heart clenched at her kindness, even if she wasn't close with her stepmom she still missed having an older mother figure to talk too.

"Thank you, Melissa, I just might take you up on that." She smiled making Melissa smile and rubbing her shoulder.

"Good, I could use another girl in the houses sometimes, Scott doesn't love when force him to watch Dirty Dancing with me."

That made Melody laugh, hard, before the pair quieted and resumed watching just as coach yelled as that boy took down another player. Hard.

"The bigger they are - The bigger they are!" Coach punched the air with a wide smile and Melody had no idea what he meant.

It was almost an hour later Melody found herself searching for the twins who randomly disappeared, leaving her alone, with Melissa which she didn't mind but the principal was staring to creep her out.

Melody groaned to herself, annoyed, she'd much rather be at home by now swimming or reading her current book but instead she was walking towards the school in hopes to find the twins or at least one of them. Maybe she would finally get to go home.

"Did you notice I'm paralyzed from the neck down in eight feet of water?!" A voice yelled as she walked past the pool house making her stop in her steps.

"Okay. I don't see it." Another voice shouted as she heard splashing and suddenly recognized the voice as none other as Stiles freaking Stilinksi.

"Wait, wait, wait, stop, stop." The other voice shouted, and Melody winced knowing she was about to do something stupid but she was curious and it sounded like they were in trouble.

"What's it waiting for?" Stiles shouted

Melody opened the door with a loud creak echoing off the walls making the two guys in the pool look over in shock.

"Melody?" Stiles furrowed his brows

"Stiles? What the hell are you doing? Who's that? I heard shouting?" Mel asked with wide eyes looking at the two as Stiles struggled to swim.

"Melody get out of here! Run!" Stiles yelled alerting the lizard the creature making it leap down in from of her.

"Holy Hells, what is that?" She yelled locking eyes with the lizard like creatures green silted eyes as it hissed and tilted its head at her like she was a bug it was about to squash.

"Get in the pool! It's scared of water!" The other man yelled as Melody backed away.

"I can't swim!" Lying Melody hoped the creature would just let her go.  Derek's brows furrowed as her heart skipped at the lie.

Melody's hopes were crushed as the lizard threw her to the ground, hard.

"Melody!" Stiles yelled trying to swim closer only for Derek to yell at him.

"Don't go closer! Melody just jump in!" Derek yelled but got slightly muffled by water entering his mouth.

Melody started to back away from the creature in fear while screaming at herself for being stupid enough to come into the pool area even if she thought someone was in trouble. She had to make a decision, now, if there was this supernatural lizard in town then there must be something more happening, but how would her new friends react to her. Would they think she was a freak? No one had ever seen her in the water outside of her family.

Still backing up, Mels decision was made for her when her hand landed in a puddle and her heart dropped.

"Shit.." Melody pushed off the ground with shakey hands before running and gracefully diving into the pool just missing the lizards grasp.

She barely made it fully into the pool when her tail sprouted out, a part of her thankful for her mom's necklace that made her able to keep her clothes and her forms separate.

Melody broke through the water taking a deep breath as she locked eyes with Stiles and the man's shocked faces.

She knew that she looked like she just walked out of a story book especially with her hair braided out of her face with shells and pearls thanks to her little sister having too much fun the night before but that's what Mel gets for falling asleep in the tub.

"You.. you.. your a" Stiles stuttered in shock as the other just stared.

"I'm a Mermaid" Melody said with a wince breaking eye contact with her friend.

"Mermaids aren't real." The other man said as his  blue eyes grew wider.

"I don't know, I feel pretty real." Mel laughed nervously looking back to them as she felt her cheeks get red at their stares. No one outside of her family had ever seen her like this so she was becoming an anxious mess.

"Here..I can help Stiles." Melody said swimming over to the pair grabbing the drowning man's arm and wrapping it around her shoulder making it so the man could breathe easier.

"What is that thing? And who are you?" Melody asked looking over seeing that Stiles was still staring at her in shock as she flicked her tail to keep them up.

"We don't know, it's just been killing people and this is Derek Hale." Stiles explained still looking enchanted at her.

"Derek Hale as in the guy you talked about in Chemistry with Scott?" She questioned repositioning Derek's arm so she could take more weight off stiles.

"Yeah.. wait you did hear us the other day! How?" Stiles asked

"I'm a Mermaid Stiles, I have better hearing than humans." Mel replied before continuing with her questions.

"Wait so that means you guys were being serious? Werewolves are real?" She asked now being the one shocked.

"I don't know, I feel pretty real." Derek sassed back returning what she said earlier.

"So you turned Isaac and Erica?" Mel questioned looking at the werewolf now.

"And Boyd." Stiles added making her look to him and back to the wolf.

"Yes, I need to build a pack." Derek explained

"Oh so you thought turning three teenagers was a brilliant idea? Seriously?" Melody sassed like Derek was an absolute idiot for doing that.

"I don't need to explain myself to a fish." Derek growled.

"Is he always this rude?" She asked annoyed turning to Stiles who was finding the conversation to be entertaining

"That and violence are basically his only modes." Stiles answered honestly.

"Don't be such a Sour Wolf." Melody smiled widely proud at the nickname until Derek spoke up.

"Did you teach her that?" Dereks head whipped to Stiles.

"No." Stiles retorted.

The group settled into silence only for Stiles to break it.

"So how are you a fish?" Stiles asked looking over to narrow his eyes at Melody making her a little uncomfortable.

"Mermaid. I'm a mermaid, Stiles, not a fish and can we not do this right now? There is a giant lizard that wants to eat us." Melody snapped making Stiles scoff and the wolf sharing a look of annoyance with her.

"Okay. Okay, I don't think I can do this much longer." Stiles spoke up again.

"No, no, no. Don't even think about it." Derek said whipping his head to look at him with wide eyes.

"Would you just trust me this once?" Stiles snapped making his voice echo through the room.

"No." Derek deadpanned making Melody stifle her giggle.

"I'm the one keeping you alive, okay, have you noticed that?" Stiles snapped at the man making melody snap back.

"Hey! What am I?" Mel exclaimed throwing a hand on the water making Stiles get hit by a wave of water.

"We are." Stiles corrected with a sharp nod to Melody.

"Yeah. And when the paralysis wears off, who is gonna be able to fight that thing, you or me? You don't trust me I don't trust you. You need me to survive, which is why you guys are not letting me go." Derek yelled back making Melody actually want to drop this guy.

"What am I?" Melody frowned at Derek.

"You have no legs. How exactly are you going to help?" Derek deadpanned at her.

"I don't need legs to fight.. but you made your point." Melody sassed back quietly.

"I'm doing it." Stiles muttered letting them go and Melody lost her grip on Derek as he yelled.

"Stiles!" Derek yelled as he sank underneath the surface.

"Seriously Stiles!" Melody yelled diving down to where Derek was slowly sinking down to the bottom unable to save himself.

Melody grabbed under Derek's shoulders as she held onto him and forced her tail to propel them upwards pushing Derek ahead so he broke through first.

Melody broke through the surface as Stiles yelled through the phone and then proceeded to drop it in the pool.

"Stiles I can't hold him all by myself!" Melody snapped as she struggled until finally Stiles swam over and gripped Derek's arm to help her.

"Thank you for saving me" Derek said to Melody whose eyes went wide not expecting him to thank her.

"I can't stay up any longer, I need something to hold onto." Stiles said as he slowly sank beneath the surface as he started to panic.

"The diving board." Melody said and Stiles started swimming away before she could even finish getting the same idea.

Stiles however was panicking and starting flailing around more than actually swimming and kicked Melody's tail.

"Ouch! Stiles! Calm down! You're making things worse and you just kicked me!" Melody exclaimed trying to keep Derek up as Stiles unknowingly dragged them down.

Just as Melody thought they were safe again Stiles lost his grip on the diving board making them sink as she tried and failed to keep them all above the surface.

But a hand reached down grabbing both the boys the ripped them out of the pool making it so Melody finally could swim properly and she broke the surface as Scott growled so loud it shook the windows.

Melody's heart dropped at the sight before her, Scott was on all fours with blazing yellow eyes and sharp fangs as he growled loudly at the lizard.

Scott faced off with the figure as it used its tail to fling the boy into a mirror on the wall beside an unconscious Erica she didn't notice earlier.

Scott flipped up taking a piece of the mirror with him going to use it as a weapon but the lizard stopped catching its reflection before hissing and jumping through the roof.

"What the hell." Melody sighed in shock as everyone stared at each other gasping for breath.

Derek finally having feeling back turned to her with wide eyes. "Do you need help out?"

Melody just slowly nodded not taking her eyes off Scott in response, she slightly in shock at seeing Scott as a werewolf.

"Here, give me your arms." Derek said and Melody nodded again as Derek pulled her out of the pool slowly.

Melody landed on the wet ground with a thud and leaned up on her elbows as Scott looked at awe at her.

"How do you? Uh?" Derek asked nodding to her long tail as Scott locked eyes with Stiles.

"I got it." Mel replied slowly closing her hand into a fist as steam suddenly filled the space and after a couple moments it cleared showing Melody back to normal as she stood.

"Told you I wasn't useless in a fight." Mel smiled shyly at the group before they walked out.

"You can keep this between us right?" Melody winced as her anxiety grew, no one outside her family ever knew about her and she made sure of that but now well..

"Of course, as long as you keep ours safe too." Derek replied for them as Erica sided eyed her.

"So you were born like this?" She asked referring to all the wolves in the group.

"No, only Derek was, the rest of us are bitten, and Stiles is human." Scott explained making her nod.

"So you're a mermaid?" Scott asked confused watching as Melody anxiously played with her mom's necklace.

"Yes" Melody replied refraining from sassing him out of stating the obvious.

"How?" Scott frowned as they stopped in front of what must be Stiles jeep.

"I was born one. My birth mother is a mermaid from the northern pod." Melody explained

"Northern pod? Like pack?" Stiles questioned her.

"Yeah.. I mean I guess they're similar so yes? I was really young when she left, being on land when you're a mermaid isn't natural, the longer your away from water the more painful it gets and it was taking to much of a toll on her body." She explained still playing with her necklace as her nerves got the best of her.

"You told Lydia and Addie she died?" Scott states warily narrowing his eyes at her.

"I kinda lied.... I mean, She almost did had she not gone back to the ocean." Melody replied shrugging at the wolf.

"So why are you still here? How is that even possible if it's painful." Derek asked crossing his arms.

"It's not easy, but I promised my dad I'd stay until graduation and now I can't exactly leave until I'm legal. Plus that wouldn't be fair to Rain. I would've had to go with her, but with being born on land and having my father's genes my tail didn't show up until I hit puberty." She explained rocking on her heels

"Wow that-" Stiles said with wide eyes searching for something

"-Sucked. Imagine going through everything you deal with but adding magic, a tail and managing staying alive. You would get that though wouldn't you, Derek?" Melody asked looking to the older wolf.

"Yeah, I do." Derek smiled lightly at her, something about her antics reminding him of his little sister making his heart clench.

"So does your mom like sing and sink ships." Stiles yelped when Scott slapped him.

"Seriously Stiles." Scott exclaimed

"My dad said they outlawed it centuries ago, so no. We are actually a pretty peaceful species but everything I know is only what my dad taught me. But before you ask stiles, no I've never tried and I don't sing anymore." Melody offered hoping to shut down his next question.

"How have I never heard of your kind before?" Derek furrowed.

"Other than how terrible being on land is?" Mel withdrew frowning at him. "Hunters. Catching a mermaid is like winning the holy grail. So they'd rather stay away from land than get killed, skinned or trapped in a tank for the rest of their very long lives."  Melody explained shivering at the thought of being trapped like that.

"Wow.." Scott mumbled

"I can trust you guys to keep this secret right? No one outside of tonight can know or else I'll be seriously in trouble." Mel asked the group and got a mumbled reply of yes's.

"Does anyone know where the twins went? We came together." Melody asked

"She uh left, but I can drive you." Stiles offered.

"Ugh um okay. Thanks Stiles."

"It's called a kanima." Derek suddenly announced catching everyone's attention.

"You knew the whole time." Stiles stepped forward slightly accusing the alpha

"No. Only when it was confused by its own reflection." Derek shook his head

"It doesn't know what it is." Scott said in realization looking to Derek.

"Or who." He added

"What else do you know?" Stiles pushed

"Just stories, rumors." Derek shrugged lightly as Melody felt Ericas eyes on her again making her glance at her.

"But it's like us?" Scott asked

"A shape - shifter, yes, but it's - it's not right. It's like a - " Derek stopped searching for the right word.

" An abomination." Stiles finished making the alpha nod at him.

"Derek? We need to work together on this. Maybe even tell the Argents." Scott pushed Derek

" You trust them?" Derek asked shocked

"Nobody trusts anyone! That's the problem. While we're here, arguing about who's on what side, there's something scarier, stronger and faster than any of us, and it's k*lling people and we still don't even know anything about it." Scott basically yelled making Melody tense.

"I know one thing, when I find it? I'm gonna k*ll it!" Derek stated firmly before looking to her. "If I was you I'd join me, I can keep you safe from the hunters and this Kanima."

Mel shook her head at him lightly "I don't want anything to do with any of this. I have a plan, it involves graduating high school and leaving to find my mom, i'm not ruining that by getting wrapped up in all this."

"If you change your mind, find me." Derek said turning around to head towards his tinted out Camaro with a soaking wet Erica following.
