Chapter 9 of 25

10 | Asylum

A/n: Hey guys!

So, I made some changes in the last chapter so it can match up the storyline I'm thinking of. I will put the changed part here, though. Enjoy reading!

•••••••••••••••••••••••••

"That boy... He has such powerful abilities. Why he couldn't sense his own father, I have no idea."

"Mary's spirit... Do you really think she saved the boys?"

"I do-"

"And Y/n Y/l/n was with them... Why does that name sound so familiar?"

"John Winchester, I could just slap you. Why don't you go and talk to your children?"

"I want to. You have no idea how much I wanna see 'em. But I can't. Not yet. Not until I know the truth."

•••••••••••••••••••••••••

"No, Dad was in California when we last heard from him," Sam sighs. "We thought if he came to you for munitions, maybe you've seen him in the last few weeks... Just call us if you hear anything. Thanks."

"Caleb hasn't heard from him?"

"Who's Caleb?" You interrupt their conversation. Hey, if they allowed you to tag along (not that they had a choice), they had to explain some stuff to you. You did remember seeing the name in their dad's journal.

"He's another hunter. Our dad's friend."

"Nope," Sam answers Dean's question. "Neither has Jefferson or Pastor Jim. What about the journal? Any leads there?"

Dean shakes his head and you scoff. "Why is your dad keeping things so..." you search for a word. "Hush-hush?"

Dean raises his eyebrows and Sam gives you a small smile.

"We don't know," Dean says and you sigh.

"Maybe we should call the Feds. File a missing person's."

"Dad'll be pissed if we put the Feds on his tail," Dean says.

"Yeah, and Feds don't do missing persons," you say, curtly.

Sam just sighs and puts his head in his hands. Whatever he did, whenever he did it, you always had the urge to take a picture. Such perfection.

You blush at your thought. But what was the use in denying it? He was sheer perfection and you weren't. Another reason that led you to believe that he could never have feelings for you.

"Don't say that!" Dean speaks loudly and snaps you out of your reverie. The ringing of a phone echoes in the room. "He's not dead. He's- he's-"

"He's what? He's hiding? He's busy?"

Dean takes out his phone and snaps it open. He lightly chuckles. "I don't believe it."

"What?" You sit up straighter in the motel couch and chew on your lip. It was a habit you had developed in the past week because of all the excessive thinking and whatnot.

Last week, a few days after leaving the boys' old home, you had called your mom. You knew that you couldn't leave the boys now and you couldn't tell your mom you were a monster hunter. So you continued with your excuse of Sam having the flu. She sounded wary of it but she believed it; surprisingly. She was a lawyer and she bought a secret. You must be really good at lying to fool your mom.

"It's a-a text message. Co-ordinates."

~~

Rockford, Illinois

You sit in the booth behind the cop in the bar and look at Dean as he approaches him. You sip on your beer and turn to Sam who was sitting across you. "So, I just sit here while you get the information?"

"Pretty much, yeah," Sam shrugs.

You raise an eyebrow and purse your lips before taking another sip. "Think you better go now," you gesture to the men. He gives you a pursed smile before getting up and walking to them.

You almost burst into laughter when you see the way Sam pulls Dean from the seat and shoves him. You smirk as you place some money on the table and stalk out of there. You feel Sam's eyes follow you but you shrug it off.

"See someone special?" Officer Daniel smirks at Sam.

"Uh- no, I don't even know her," he furrows his brows before diverting the topic.

You see Dean leaning against the Impala when you walk outside. You pull your jacket a bit tighter.

"That was funny," you stand next to him and gaze at the bar's door; awaiting Sam's arrival.

"For you," you chuckle. You pause before asking Dean the question that had been bothering you for weeks.

"Do you think Missouri is legit?"

"What do you mean?"

"What she said about my parents... What if something actually happens to them?" You hear Dean sigh and he looks at you.

"I don't know honestly. But she did say that they would already be in danger and you just talked to them like a week ago, right?"

You nod your head and nibble on your lips. "Hopefully."

You give him a wary smile. His lips were parted and his eyebrows were slightly raised.

The sound of the door opening made the two of you whip your faces away from each other. Dean recovers faster than you do. "You shoved me kinda hard in there, buddy boy."

"I had to sell it, didn't I?" Sam turns to you and has a cheeky smile on his face. You chuckle as he explains what the officer told him.

~~

"How in hell-"

"I'll help you," Sam sighs.

He helps you over the fence of the asylum, the place where that cop went last before killing his wife and himself. You jump onto the other side and jump a bit when you hear Sam land beside you.

It was so hard. Pretending to not have feelings for him. Pretending to be nothing but his friend. But you knew you couldn't just tell him, out of the blue, that you loved him.

You guys entered the asylum building and the smell of dust hit your nose. The walls were vandalized by teenagers; you could make out by the swear words and ships. There was paper thrown in places and the floors were dirty.

"So, apparently, the cops chased the kids here, into the South Wing."

You turn and see the words 'SOUTH WING' written in peeling red paint.

"South Wing, huh?" Dean asks and removes his dad's journal from his jacket. You frown at how he carried a book in his jacket.

"'1972, three kids broke into the South Wing. Only one survived.'"

Classic horror movie story.

"He says, that one of his friends went crazy, starting lighting up the place."

"So, whatever is going on, it's all related to the South Wing," you say.

"But if kids are spelunking the asylum, why aren't there a ton more deaths?"

"Looks like the doors are usually chained," you glance at the door after Sam speaks and sees a chain hanging from the handles.

"They could've been chained up for years to keep people out," Dean nods as you say it.

"Or to keep something in," Dean says and you sigh.

"See, saying things like that makes me regret coming with you crack jobs."

~~~
"Now, I'll make you a deal. I'll tell you all about the Roosevelt riot if you tell me something honest about yourself like, uh, your brother and friend that you've been road-tripping with. How do feel about him... and her," Dr. James Ellicott, the son of Sanford Ellicott says to Sam. Sam raises his eyebrows and purses his lips. The doubt was evident in Sam's eyes. But if he came to see a psychiatrist, he better make the most of it.
~~
"So, Marlin is in love with Dory?" Dean asks with furrowed brows.
While waiting for Sam, when Dean had revealed that he didn't have a taste for Disney movies, you almost flipped. You decided to narrate the whole plot of Finding Nemo to him. Though he kept rolling his eyes and giving you exasperated looks and sighed during the starting, after you were finished, he started asking you questions like a 5-year-old would.
"No!" You whine. "They are friends! A girl and a guy can be friends, you know," you look at him.
"Yeah, but does that rule apply to fish," he says as he wiggles his eyebrows at you.
"Ew," you moan. "Images, man. Images."
He chuckles and you hit his shoulder. You turn when you see Sam walk past you guys. You walk fast and look up at him. "Dude. You were in there forever. What the hell were you talking about?" Dean asks as he catches up too. You give him a look when Sam wasn't looking at you guys.
"Just the hospital, you know," he replies bleakly.
"And?" You press, knowing that it wouldn't take him that long. What did the man tell him? Or, more, importantly, what did the man make Sam tell him? He was a psychiatrist after all.
"And the South Wing. It's where they housed the real hard cases. The psychotics, the criminally insane."
You raise your eyebrows. "Sounds cozy," Dean mutters.
"Yeah, and one night in '64, they rioted. Attacked the staff. Attacked each other."
"So what? The patients took over the asylum?"
"Apparently."
"Any deaths?" You ask. You were pretty sure it was a spirit. But your knowledge wasn't as broad as the boys'.
"Some patients, some staff. I guess it was pretty gory. Some of the bodies were never even recovered including our chief of staff, Ellicott."
"Never recovered?" You ask, more to yourself but Sam answers.
"Cops scoured every inch of that place but I guess the patients must have stuffed the bodies somewhere hidden."
"Images. Again," you mutter with a disgusted look on your face. Sam looks at you with furrowed eyebrows while Dean chuckles.
~~
"Did we have to do this during the night? This place gave me chills in daylight, too," you shudder as an icy gust of wind passes through the hallway of the South Wing. You guys walk down the stinking corridor. Black marks decorated the walls everywhere.
"Hey listen!" You say with a mischievous smile.
"I would tell you guys a pun about insanity but I lost it." You smile at them as they both roll their eyes but you notice the smile Dean was trying to fight off his face.
Dean and Sam continued talking and you were pretty sure Dean made a joke but you completely ignored it. Every time the hallway branched into a room or another hallway, you held your breath. If anything jumped out, you knew you would shout your head off. You were that scared.
Sam takes a right and walks into a room as you stick close to Dean.
"Dean! Y/n!" You and Dean look at each other before running into the room Sam was in. You gasp when you see it. An old women's spirit. You exhale sharply as Dean shoots it with the rock salt. The spirit disappears and you take in a breath.
~~
You and Sam walk the halls as you try to search for Gavin, the girl who you just found's, boyfriend. Sam shouts out his name and you dart your flashlight in every direction.
"Will you cut that out!?" You whisper-shout and flash your torch at him."You're just going to get unwanted attention." You bring your flashlight in front of yourself again. He chuckles slightly as you guys keep walking.
"Don't worry, I'm here to protect you," he answers and you would have scoffed if those words didn't hit your heart with feels. He could have said the same to Jessica. You clench your jaw at the thought and continue walking.
You guys take a right at the end of the corridor. "Hey, look," you point to the feet you saw peeping out from the doorway. You give Sam a look before the both of you make your way to the boy lying down on the floor.
"Hey, Gavin," you whisper as you place your hand on his arm.
He gets up with a start and looks at you in fear. "Hey, chill. It's ok. We're here to help you."
"Who are you?"
"My name is Sam and this is Y/n. We found your girlfriend." The three of you get up.
"Is she alright?"
"She's worried about you," you say. "What happened?" You ask when you notice the blood trickling from his forehead.
"I was running. I think I fell," he winces as he bends his head.
"Running from what?" Sam asks.
"There was- there was this girl. Her-her face...it was all messed up."
"Listen, listen. Did this girl try to hurt you?" Sam asks and widens his eyes slightly. You were too preoccupied freaking out to notice the strangeness of his question.
"What, no. She-uh," he hesitates and you push him. "She what?"
"She kissed me," he says as he makes a face. You raise your eyebrows, thinking if you heard it right.
"She what now?" You purse your lips. Sam gives you a look and turns back to Gavin.
"But-uh, she didn't hurt you physically?"
"Dude, she kissed me. I'm scarred for life."
Sam chuckles slightly before speaking. "Trust me, it could've been a whole lot worse. Now was there anything else?"
"She-uh, she actually tried whispering something in my ear."
"What?" You ask, getting a bit too eager to see what it all meant.
"I don't know. I ran like hell."
You turn to Sam, wide-eyed, and frustrated.
~
"137."
"Sorry?"
The running had made you run out of breath. When you heard the calls for help and the sound of something being shut, you three ran towards Dean and Kat. She was locked in a room by a spirit supposedly and Dean was trying to open the door. Sam, for some reason, told Kat to face the spirit; that it wouldn't hurt her. Fortunately, it didn't and she came out of the room unharmed. And she spoke those words.
"It whispered in my ear. 137," she was out of breath too. You knew that you would be lucky to be half as brave as this girl was.
"Room number," Sam and Dean say together and you chuckle.
"Memories. You guys are adorable."
~
You decide to go with Dean to look for room 137 while Sam tried to get those kids out of the asylum.
"So, how do guys know about all this ghost stuff?"
"It's kind of our job," Sam answers Kat as they walk past the dingy walls of the abandoned building.
"Why would anyone want a job like that?"
Sam chuckles. "I had a crappy guidance counselor."
"And Dean? He's your boss?"
"No."
"And Y/n? Is she dating him?"
The ugly feeling that went over Sam took him by surprise.
Y/n and Dean dating. He scoffed in his mind. Sure. Surely you wouldn't have feelings for a guy like Dean. Right?
"Sam?"
"Huh- no. No, she isn't. Why- why do you ask?" Sam tries not to grit his teeth. His best friend and his brother.
"I don't know. They just seem to be close." She shrugs as if those words wouldn't have an impact on anyone.
He was the one who knew her for three years, not Dean. He was the one who was there for her, not Dean. Another wave of an uncomfortable feeling went through him and Sam willed himself not to overcomplicate things.
"This place is giving me the heebie-jeebies," you whisper.
Dean chuckles heartily and you glare at him; you were pretty sure you were close to room 137. His laugh was very loud.
"Heebie-jeebies? Y/n," he gazes at you and stops walking. He shakes his head after a while and looks ahead. "You're such a kid."
"Shut up."
"You are a-"
"No, seriously. Shut up. Look," you aim your flashlight at the number written in the door in front of you guys. 137.
Dean pushes the door open and inside lays a mess. Furniture was toppled over and stacks of paper lay scattered all over.
"Doctor Sanford Ellicott," Dean says and you look away from the broken chair to the name card on the floor.
You walk around and inspect some files in a cabinet while Dean kneels down in front of the wall.
"Hey, check it out."
You turn around and see Dean remove a wooden panel in the wall to reveal a leather file. You hold the flashlight above the file while Dean opens it. "This is why I get paid the big bucks."
"'Patient's journal'," you read out from the stack of papers in Dean's hand that he removed from the file.
"All work and no play makes Dr. Ellicott a very dull boy," you purse your lips at what Dean said but squint your eyes as you look at the diagrams.
"Wait, Dean. Look at these drawings. Did he- did he actually do this to the patients?"
Dean looks up at you gravely and sighs.
~
Dean pushes you when Kat shoots.
"Damn it! Damn it!" Dean shouts when you swear. "Don't shoot! It's us!"
"Sorry! Sorry!" Kat shouts out.
"Son of a-" he turns back to give you a look and you return it. You almost pulled him down to see if he was fine but you decided against it.
"What are you still doing here?" Dean asks.
"And, where's Sam?" You add in and Dean rolls his eyes.
"He went to the basement. You called him," Gavin answers.
"I didn't call him," Dean looks at you and you shake your head. "Neither did I."
"His cellphone rang. He said it was you," Kat says and you feel your heartbeat quicken.
After a moment of all of you looking wide-eyed at each other, Dean asks: "Basement, huh?"
~
You and Dean make your way to the basement, calling out the younger Winchester's name as you did.
"Sam?" You call out before coming face to face with him. You jump and swear. "Sam!"
Dean turns to you guys and you calm yourself down. But you swore that he wasn't standing there before.
"Answer us when we're calling you!" Dean says and Sam looks at the two of you with an amused smile.
"You alright?"
"Yeah, I'm fine." He looks at you as he says it.
You eye him warily. You... just had a bad feeling.
"That wasn't me who called your cell," Dean breathes out.
"Yeah, I know. I think something lured me down here."
"I think I know who. Doctor Ellicott. That's what the spirits have been trying to tell us. You haven't seen him, have you?"
"No. How do you know that it was him?"
"Cause we found his logbook," you answer after inspecting where you guys were. "Apparently, he was experimenting on his patients. Really bad stuff. Makes lobotomies look like-"
"A couple of aspirin," Dean completes. You look at him with an amused look and then back at Sam. You could swear you saw something flash behind his eyes.
"But it was the patients who rioted," Sam states.
"Yeah, they were rioting against Ellicott," you scoff as you say it.
"Doctor Feelgood," you frown at Dean's reference," was working on some sort of extreme rage therapy. He thought if he could get his patients to vent their anger, then they would be cured of it. But instead, it only made them worse and worse and angrier and angrier. So, what if his spirit was doing the same thing? To the cop, the kids in the '70s, making them so angry they become homicidal."
You bite your lip when Dean finishes and Sam scoffs.
"Come on," you say as you continue walking. "We have to find his bones and burn them."
"How? The police never found his body," you and Dean turn back to look at Sam.
"Well, the logbook said that he had some hidden procedure room down here, somewhere he'd work on his patients. So, if I was a patient, I'd drag his down here and do a little work myself." You frown at the words but they were probably true.
"I don't know. That sounds kinda-"
"Crazy?" You chuckle as you complete his sentence.
"Yeah," he replies. You follow Dean down the hallway, with nothing but a flashlight and a lighter. You still hadn't learned to use a gun and you didn't wish to.
"Yeah, exactly," you answer and follow Dean into a room.
"I told you I looked everywhere. I didn't find a hidden room."
"Well, that's why they call it hidden," Dean says and you chuckle.
"You hear that?" Dean asks and you and Sam ask him at the same time: "What?"
"There's a door here," you walk over to Dean and crouch next to him.
"You're righ-" you're cut off by the sound of a shotgun being cocked.
"Dean. Y/n."
You both turn around and see Sam pointing the shotgun at you. You look at him with furrowed eyebrows.
"Sam. What are you-" A trickle of blood flowed from his nose and he wiped it on his jacket.
"Step back from the door," he says calmly.
You look over at Dean and he looks back at you too. He shrugs before getting up and pulling you up too. Sam's eyes flick to his hand on your arm and he sneers.
"Sam. Put the gun down," Dean says as you just stare in horror at Sam. Sam, your friend. Pointing a gun at you.
"Is that an order?" Sam asks and Dean exhales from his nose.
"It's more of a friendly request," Dean jokes and you had half the mind to smack him. Your head was flooded with thoughts. Sam lifts the gun to his shoulder's level and you gasp. He doesn't pay any attention to you, though.
"Cause I'm getting pretty tired of taking your orders," he ignored what Dean had said too.
"I knew it," Dean snorts slightly. "Ellicott did something to you."
Your eyes widen as you hear what Dean says.
"For once in your life, shut up," he says.
"Sam, please," you breathe out. "It's Y/n. Your- your friend." Sam points the gun at you and before he can speak, Dean does.
"What are you going to do, Sam? The gun's filled with rock salt. It's not going to kill me."
Sam shoots and Dean falls into the wall and into a room.
"No, but it will hurt like hell."
"Dean!" You turn to make your way to Dean when you hear Sam behind you.
"Not so fast, Y/n."
A sharp pain erupts in your head and before you know it, you feel your world go black.
~
You wake up on the ground with a jolt. You almost swear out loud but then you see Sam towering over Dean with the shotgun. You find yourself calling out for Sam and you curse yourself.
"Oh, Y/n has joined the party." Sam makes his way over to you and you bring yourself up on your elbows. You regretted it immediately because of the throbbing pain in your head.
"Sam. What are you-"
"No, Y/n. What are you doing? Because it seems to me that you have no clue. So desperate to find your place in life; so desperate to leave your depressing life behind that'll you will join two hunters. That is just so sad." He chuckles and you grit your teeth. The blood was again trickling down from his nose. "You always tried to fit in, didn't you?" He asks in a way adults talked to babies. "In college too. Yeah, that's right. Jess and I noticed. But we chose to be your friends, despite how fake and pathetic you were. Despite how unique you tried to be when you were just a normal nobody. We only were your friends out of pity, of course," he chuckles once again.
"And what's with blaming me for Jessica's death? God knows that if you had been there earlier, she would be alive. Y/n, you-"
"Hey! That's enough!" Dean says and you and Sam turn to him. Your vision was blurry and it was then only that you realized that you had been crying.
Dean hands Sam his gun when he comes close to him."Real bullets are going to work a hell of a lot better than rock salt. Take it!"
You sniff and plead Sam to stop but your voice was heavy with crying. You hadn't been crying that bad, right?
Sam drops the shotgun and holds Dean's gun up. He bends down and holds it above Dean's face.
"You hate me that much? You really think you can kill your own brother?"
You see Sam hesitate and you hold your breath. Sam wouldn't do it.
"Then go ahead. Pull the trigger."
You knew Sam wouldn't. Sam was nothing but good.
Your thoughts stop when you hear the clicking of the gun. He pulled the trigger again but no bullets flew. Dean tackles him to the ground and groans in pain. You get up and make your way to them, your head throbbing even more. You touch your head where he hit you and it comes away red. You just hoped you didn't need stitches.
Dean gets up as Sam lays sprawled on the ground. "Man, I'm not going to give you a loaded pistol." Dean hits him one more time and he gets knocked out. Dean falls to the ground and grunts again.
You turn around. Sam would wake up any second now. You walk around, trying very hard to ignore the physical and emotional pain you were going through. Dean finally gets up and joins you. With your backs faced to each other, you guys go through cabinets and cupboards; anything a body could fit into. You shudder at the thought but continue.
You turn and look down at Sam. He was out cold and blood was dripping from his nose. What he said... It was true. It all was. And you knew it. Always going to parties when you preferred staying in your dorm and reading a book with a cup of hot chocolate. But you were always yourself when you were with him. You felt your heartbeat quicken when you think that they were your friends because they pitied you. You were-
"Y/n, here!" Dean shouts. You shout in response but linger back. Dr. Elliott was a psychotic psychiatrist. That's a nice thought.
You turn around and gasp. Behind Dean, who was crouching in front of a small cupboard was a sickly pale silhouette of a man with white hair. He was wearing a white coat. A lab coat...
"Dean!" You shout but a bed from the side hit his shoulder and he fell and the spirit of Ellicott pounced on him.
"Don't be afraid," he says in an eery voice.
You frantically look around the room. It was an advantage because the doctor didn't notice you. You see the decaying body in the cupboard and smack yourself internally for being stupid. You rush and there and fall onto your knees as you approach it. You saw small white particles and the corpse was a bit wet. You lit your lighter and chucked it onto the stinking heap of bones and decayed muscles.
The creepy old man goes up in flames and you waddle your way to Dean on your knees.
"Dean," you breathe out and look at his face. "Are you fine?"
He grunts in response and gets up. At that same moment, Sam gets up too.
You sigh and look at both the boys.
"How can't the freakin' police find a hidden room with a freaking dead body?" You breathe out and let your frustration go to the police officers.
~~
You look up from the back seat of the Impala and see Sam talking to Dean. Probably apologizing. He hadn't apologized to you yet. But you knew what you would do if he did.
Finally, they both get into the car and you speak. "I don't know about you guys but I'm starving."
They both chuckle and Dean starts the car. "A woman after my own heart."
~~
"Mmm," you moan as you bite into the burger at the cafe you guys found. "This. Is. Amazing."
"Slow down there, tiger," Dean chuckles as he finishes his burger. "I'mma hit the head."
Dean gets up and leaves you and Sam alone. You glance up at him, the words he said still fresh in your mind.
"I am sorry for the other things I said," he says, looking at you with sincere eyes. You put your burger on the plate and purse your lips.
"Yeah, okay," you murmur.
"I didn't mean it," he says again and leans across the table.
You sigh. "Yeah, I know, Sam. And even if you did or did not mean it, I just want to say that I never pretended around you."
"Y/n, no-"
"And the whole hunting thing," you pause, feeling a bit sick. "I don't know what's wrong with me but this... It feels right."
"Killing monsters?" Sam asks, confusion on his face. "Eating diner food," he questions, gesturing to your sandwich.
You draw your eyebrows together. "Hey, I thought you were apologising." Sam nods once after a second and you swear you almost saw him roll his eyes. "But. Yeah. I don't know. But I never lied to you. Well, except for that one time I took the ten dollars on your apartment table. But I told Jess-" You stop rambling when you see his expression. "Sam, you are...something special. What I have with you... I don't have that with anyone else." You look into his beautiful eyes and he looks into yours.
"Thank you," he mutters before Dean plops down in his seat.
You guys continue talking and you ignore the small glances Sam gave you and the butterflies in your stomach that followed.
~~~

You wake up to the sound of one of the boys' ringtones. Yours was your favourite song but this one was a generic, pissing-off one.

You turn around on the couch with half-lidded eyes and look at the side table from where the noise came.

You grunted when you covered your face with your hands. "Pick up the phone," you groan, hoping one of the boys will hear you. When you brought them down, you saw Sam reaching for the phone. He brought it to his ear and immediately sat up straight. He didn't look at you, just straight ahead and you felt your heartbeat quicken with worry. What he said made you sit up with widened eyes.

"Dad?"
