You push past people at the party. Unlike the boys, you took the time to change your clothes in a supermarket's toilet on the way.
Instead of your usual T-shirt and jacket with jeans, you wore a tight-fitting blood red top that dipped a bit too low in the back and front with black skin-tight jeans. You chose to wear your sneakers since you knew that you and the guys wouldn't stay that long.
The reason you wore the top, and you tried denying it, was because you were self-conscious. You didn't know why but when you started this case and met the frat boys and Ryan, you felt the need to prove yourself.
The party was filled with people dancing but there had been someplace for the three of you to stand and talk. Sam and Dean had looked at you weird with you wearing the top; they still did, but you shrugged it off.
As soon as you had entered the house, you saw Ryan and he had called you over to his gang of friends. You hesitated but you hesitated, even more, when you saw Sam's expression. His expression was midway; between mad and confused. But you followed through and to be honest were having a fun time with him and his friends. The guy who painted himself purple was there too. He recognized you but chose not to tell anything when he didn't see Dean- your boyfriend around.
They talked about school and drama but were kind enough to include you in their conversations.
You suddenly look up, feeling guilty for forgetting about Sam and Dean. And you had been here only around 20 minutes. You smile when you see both of them looking at you and talking. Sam nods his head and leaves and Dean walks slowly towards you, taking in the people dancing and bumping into him. He has a look of longing on his face.
If only someone looked at you like that.
He tilts his head continuously to the side and you raise your eyebrow.
"Isn't that your boyfriend?" You look over to the purple guy pointing at Dean. Ryan looks at him too and back at you questioningly.
"Uh- I'll talk to you later," You say and walk over to Dean, ignoring Ryan's protests.
"So, where's Sam?" You ask, suddenly wanting to leave.
"He's gone with Lori. And we have some digging to do." He grins at you and you groan when you realize what you have to do.
~~
"Have you never dug up soil?" Dean asks as you huff.
You roll your eyes. "Let me think. No! I haven't dug up soil before. And obviously not to dig up someone's bones!" You yell, your voice pitching throughout the cemetery. You wince and pinch the bridge of your nose.
"I'm-"
"Let me do it for a while," Dean says as he stretches his hand out. You give him your hand as he pulls you out with surprising strength. He takes the shovel from you and starts digging.
You feel your head roam to other topics as you sit there, on the edge of the hole dug.
"Are you okay with me here? Joining you guys on hunts?" You ask abruptly, your mind wandering to how he ignored you and how cold he had been to you these past few days.
He pushes the shovel into the soil and sighs, looking up at you.
"If I'm to be honest, Y/n. No. No, I'm not fine with you being here."
You feel yourself shudder, suddenly feeling cold and you pull your jacket closer. But before your mind can stray again he speaks.
"It's not that I don't like you. Trusting someone is really big, especially if you're a hunter. You're trusting that person with your life."
You nod as you look at him.
"Sammy trusts you. You've known him for more than three years. But me? I've only known you for like a month."
You open your mouth but he cuts you off again.
"But I'm starting to trust you. Hell, if Dad was here, he'd kill me for trusting you after a month. But, I'm starting to."
For the second time, someone had rendered you speechless. Maybe it's something to do with the Winchesters.
"Maybe- with a lot of training, you can be like us. Like Sam and I," He says looking up at you with a smile ghosting his features. "Y'know. As long as you stick with us, you're good. You'd be crazy to want to be us but, you do you," he sighs.
"It feels like instinct." You say after some time while he digs. "Doing this sleuthing- I can't believe I said sleuthing," you shake your head. "Detective work and reading lore and helping you guys."
Dean looked up and gave you the are-you-crazy look. You feel yourself blush and he chuckles.
How did he see you blush in the dark?
He hits something with his shovel and looks up at you. "Yahtzee!" You breathe out.
"Hello, preacher."
You look at Dean and snort but stop. He was covered in mud and it gave him a very aesthetic look to you. You ached to take a picture of him.
After opening the coffin, Dean handed the salt to you as he poured a liquid over the skeleton of the man. You felt yourself starting to feel sick. The smell of decayed tissue hit your nose and you scrunched your face.
You sprinkle the salt all over the skeleton and Dean throws a match in the hole, lighting it on fire.
"Goodbye, preacher."
~~
Since you had helped, the work went a lot faster and Dean suggested that you guys go pick up Sam from Lori's place.
Well, not Dean but you convinced him so it might as well have been his idea.
You sat in the front with Dean since Sam wasn't there. Dean had told you about everything and you were worried about leaving Sam with a reverend who may be controlling a ghost. Or not, apparently. You still didn't understand it very well.
When you guys reached the church house, you felt your breath quicken.
"Oh, huh," you whisper looking in front of you. You lean in front and almost press your face against the windshield.
Sam and that girl- Lori kissing.
Your chest tightens and you gasp again. "What the-"
"Perv, chill!" Dean says, pulling you back. He gives you a questioning look. He glances back ahead and chuckles softly. "Yeah, get it, Sammy!"
You smack his arm. "Okay, who's being the perv now," you ask when he gives a fake wounded look.
You roll your eyes and feel your worry fade away. Sam had pulled back from Lori and was shaking his head.
You look back at him. "How can Sam do that?" You ask, feeling anger and something else fill you.
"What do you mean?" Dean looks at you.
"I- Jess just died. Isn't it too soon for this?" You knew you sounded like a bitch when you said that and you wince. You tried taking it back but Dean speaks; quite angrily at that.
"Y/n, I don't know what's up with you but if Jessica really loved him, she would want him to move on. And it's not as if he's forgetting her completely."
"Yeah, I don't know why I said that. It just came out. I'm sorry."
"You should say that to him. Honestly, you sound like a possessive girlfriend or something," Dean jokes.
But you feel yourself stiffen and look at him slowly. Your cheeks burn in the dark and you hoped that he couldn't see you. You remain quiet which was probably a bad idea because Dean looked at you weirdly.
"What- you don't actually-" But he was cut off by a shout.
Your head snaps to the shout and you see Lori's dad, the reverend just before he disappears behind the door of the house. Sam jumps from where he was sitting and runs into the house with his shotgun.
You and Dean run out of the car and follow Sam into the house. You looked at Lori who looked shocked but you didn't pay any heed to her.
You run inside the house followed by Dean. You hear a gunshot coming from upstairs and you run, as fast as your legs would take you.
A second gunshot.
You enter the room at the end of the hallway and see Sam standing over the reverend, holding his shotgun.
"Sam." You breathe out and he turns around, seeming to notice you guys for the first time. He looks at you as he breathes heavily with a look of familiarity ghosting his face.
You walk across the room, towards him but stop when you hear Lori's footfalls on the steps. She ran, calling out for her father and entered the room the four of you were in.
You all looked at her as she knelt before her dad and muttered reassurances to him. That's when you noticed the hole with blood oozing out in his shoulder.
What is going on?
~~
"You guys ought to stay out of trouble." You nod at the officer and glance at the boys beside you.
"Can we go now?" You ask, giving him your puppy dog stare.
He nods and moves. The three of you walk down the hallway if the hospital. "What the hell was that?" You ask when you're away from the sheriff.
"The Hookman."
"But we burnt the skeleton," Dean says as he looks at you for confirmation, and you nod.
"Are we sure that it was the spirit of Jacob Karns?" You ask.
"It sure looked like him. And that's not all. I don't think the spirit is latching on to the reverend."
"Yeah, the guy wouldn't send the hookman after himself." Dean agrees.
"I think it's latching on to Lori."
Before any of them can speak, you say what you were thinking. "I knew something was wrong with that bitch from the start."
Dean chuckles while Sam gives you the bitch face. You raise your hands in mock surrender and Sam continues speaking.
"Last night, she found out that her father is having an affair."
"So what?" You ask, feeling bad for calling her a bitch already.
"So, she's upset about it. She's upset about the immortality of it. She told me that she was raised to believe that if you do something wrong, you get punished."
"So, she's conflicted and the spirit of preacher Karns is latching on to her repressed emotions and doing the punishing for her," Dean says.
You nod your head as you understand.
"Rich comes off too strong because all frat boys are like that," you recieve eye rolls from the both of them and smile." Taylor tries to turn her into a party girl. Dad has an affair."
"Remind me not to piss this girl off." You roll your eyes at Dean.
"But we burned those bones!"
"Yeah, we buried it in salt too," Dean adds in. "Why didn't that stop him?"
"Maybe we missed something. But-"
You scrunch your face as you try to think.
"The Hook," Dean says and both of you look at him. "It was his murder weapon and in a way, a part of him. It's like his source of power."
"So if we find the hook-" Sam says.
"We stop the Hookman." They say together and you snort.
"That was adorable." You say as you chuckle.
Now all the three of you look at each other and you sigh, knowing where you had to go now.
~
"This whole thing is exhausting yet exciting at the same time." You say as you flip through your fifth file.
Dean snorts in response and Sam purses his lips.
You let your mind wander; a very dangerous thing.
Why would Sam pull away? Dean was right. Jess would have wanted him to move on. Then why were you so angry at seeing him with Lori? Why did you react like that?
There were a whole lot of questions and a scarce amount of answers.
You had been Sam's friend for three years. People may say that's not a long time but Sam and you just...clicked. Like platonically. You think. You knew him like he had been in your life all along. Well except for the hunting and his family, you practically knew everything about his new life.
You shrug the thought and continue with your elaborate reasoning of why you were jealous.
Not jealous, Y/n! Protective. Like a good friend should be.
You were positive that you were going crazy, worrying about all this.
"Y/n."
Your head falls off your hand and you look at Sam and Dean who looked at you quizzically.
Sam chuckles and gives you a smile. "Did you listen to anything we just said?"
Ugh! His smile. His eyes. You were sure that he was going to be the death of you.
You knew what you were feeling but you pushed it down.
He was your friend. That's all. And he just lost Jess. Nothing was ever going to happen between you.
"Y/n," Dean says, slightly growling.
"Uh- yeah?"
Sam chuckles again and shakes his head. "The Hook was reforged. We need to burn all the silver in the house."
"What house?" You ask, trying not to look at Dean's glare. You thought that he was starting to trust you. You knew you had to pay attention if you wanted him to trust you completely.
"Lori's house. The church."
You nod your head while biting your lip.
"Find the hook- well, reforged hook we find the Hookman." You say, quoting them from before.
Dean rolls his eyes slightly and Sam half-smiles.
~~
Dean decided that you would help him melt all the silver in the church while Sam would check in their house. You dreaded going with Dean, partly because of what had happened the day before and also because he looked slightly irritated with you.
Whenever you pointed out any silver object in the house, he grunted in response and picked them up.
You threw in the silver objects you collected into the fire. You and Dean stand before the fireplace and watch as the fire melts the silver. You turn over to him and curse yourself for never bringing your camera with you. The shot was perfect.
At least, I have my phone. My crappy one with a crappy camera.
"Hey, let's take a picture."
When he looks down at you weirdly, you grin.
"Come on! It's my first ghost case! I want to remember this moment."
He chuckles and bends down as you turn your phone around to take a picture. You make your signature camera look.
You bring the phone back and look at the picture. Though it was hazy, you could make out the details. It looked amazing with the orange light from the fire highlighting your faces. Dean had a huge smile on his face and looked handsome.
You frown at the thought and keep your phone back in your pocket.
~
After Sam came and left to talk to Lori (you say her name in a weird tune in your head) you and Dean continued burning the silver stuff.
"About yesterday-"
You groan and look at him. "What?"
"You don't actually like Sam, do you?"
You hesitate. Dean had seen right through you the day before but it must have also been because of your bad acting skills. You speak up, not wanting to make things awkward.
"No. No way. Why would you think that?" You say breathlessly. You took drama classes! Why weren't your acting skills helping you now!
"Maybe because you're sorta outta breath. And Sammy's a cute boy!" He says cheekily.
You laugh with him and you try to shake off the nerves.
"Yeah, totally. Sam is a cute boy. His eyes and his smile and his dimples-"
You stop when you hear Lori shouting. Dean whips his head to you and shouts. "Y/n, stay here!"
"Yeah, as if." You say as you run with him up the stairs with nothing but a brass candlestand you picked up in the basement.
You ran past the hallways as you hear Sam yell. Your heart drops but you pump your legs and catch up to Dean.
You see Sam and Lori and the spirit. He looked haggard with a hat and a hook. How the hell is he still here! You guys burned all the silver. This shouldn't be happening.
"Sam, drop!" Dean shouts and shoots.
The spirit disappears. Rock salt bullets.
You run into the room and stand beside Dean, breathing heavily because of the running and the nerves. You drop the candlestand. The brass wouldn't help you against the SOB.
"We got all of the silver. Why is he still here?" Sam breathes out.
It pained you to look at him. He was clutching his arm as he lay half sprawled on the floor with Lori who looked pale.
"Maybe we missed something!" Dean breathes out, breathless from exhilaration and running.
Sam looks around as you try to catch your breath.
"Lori, where'd you get that chain?"
"My father gave it to me!"
"Where'd your dad get it?" Dean shouts out.
"It was a church heirloom. He gave it to me!" She says breathlessly. She looked frightened to hell.
"Is it silver?" You find yourself shouting at the girl.
"Yes!" She shouts back.
Sam doesn't hesitate. He yanks the chain from her neck at chucks it in your direction.
"Dean, catch- Y/n, no! Come back!"
But it was too late. You went racing down the hallway and ran towards the door leading to the basement. You pumped your legs. You heard gunshots and the thought of Sam or Dean getting hurt made you run even faster.
You finally reached the door and practically flying down the stairs, you throw the chain in the fire willing it to melt quickly.
"Y/n!" You turn to see Dean behind you.
"It's done!" You shout as you get ready to make your way back to Sam.
Dean groans and follows you.
You reach the room just in time to see small flames in the air vanish. You look at Sam and Lori who were sitting closely in one corner, Lori looking scared and Sam looking relieved.
You give him a smile before bending down on your knees. But you feel something behind you and whip around. Turns out that your ass had hit Dean.
I couldn't get any more awkward, you groan inwardly. You blush and Dean chuckles. He leans into you as if to say something but Lori interferes by colorfully swearing.
~~
After talking to the sheriff, you leaned against the trunk of the Impala, facing Sam who was getting his wound treated. Dean was talking to the sheriff.
You have an idea and move to the car and take your camera out.
You took pictures of the church and random stuff that you found photo-worthy.
Dean walks over to the impala and you smile at him. You push back your hair that flew on your face because of the wind.
"So." You say.
"So." He replies. "Not to flatter myself but your photo album would become way better if you put in a photo of me."
You chuckle and push him away playfully as he smirks.
"I already have a picture of you, remember? I should probably upload it to my laptop as soon as we-"
But you turn to see that he wasn't paying attention to you. He was looking at Sam and Lori talking.
Sam grasped his right hand on his left shoulder for support from that nasty wound he got from that son of a bitch.
It took every pint of your willpower to not go over there and let him use your shoulder for support.
"Let's go," Dean says and you both make your way inside the car and wait for Sam to join.
Sam gets into the car, the door creaking when he pulls it shut. He looked tired.
"We can stay here if you want." Dean looks at you, surprised when you say it. But Sam didn't seem to care.
He just shakes his head slightly and Dean drives away from the place. You sink back into your seat and after some time not being able to bear the silence, speak.
"Hell of a first case."
Dean chuckles before cranking up the music in the car.
But you didn't notice that. You only noticed the fact that Sam broke into a small smile.
