Chapter 16 of 25

15 | The Benders

A/n: To be honest, this is one of the most disturbing episodes in this season.

"I know you're doing your job but the police have been here all week already. I don't see why we have to go through this again. The more he tells the story, the more he believes it's true."

"Mrs. McKay," Sam breathes out as he removes the hat off his head. You look at him and remove yours too; awkwardly. You guys were disguised as state police. You failed to mention to the guys that you didn't have any fake ID but when Mrs. McKay saw your clothes, she didn't ask; rather she got irritated.

"We know you spoke with the local authorities," Sam continues.

"But this seems like a matter for the state police," Dean completes for him and you nod.

"Just tell us what you saw, Evan," you give the boy standing behind his mom a small smile. "Doesn't matter how crazy."

"I was up late... watching TV...when I heard this weird noise," he says uncertainly.

"What'd it sound like?" Sam asks and you look up at him. He again had his hair swept back which made him look mature.

"Like a monster," he says and you look at Sam and Dean.

A monster, indeed.

"Tell the officers what you were watching," Mrs. McKay says with raised eyebrows.

"Godzilla vs. Mothra."

You and Dean chuckle.

"That's my favorite Godzilla movie. It's so much better than the original, huh?" Dean asks excitedly and a smile shadows Evan's face. Sam stares daggers at Dean.

"Totally!"

"Yeah," Dean nods his head at Sam, "He likes the remake."

Sam gives Dean his bitch face and you stop yourself from chuckling.

"Yuck!"

~~

"Maybe it's just a kidnapping?" You ask the guys as you sip on your beer.

"Yeah. Maybe this isn't our kinda gig." Dean says as he throws another dart.

"Yeah, maybe not. Except for this. Dad marked the area, guys. Possible hunting grounds for a phantom attacker," Sam tries to reason with you and Dean. You lift your beer of the small round table when he pushes the books on the table.

"Why would he even do that?" Dean walks over to you guys and looks down at the book.

"Well, he found a lot of local folklore about a dark figure that comes out at night, grabs people, then vanishes. He found this too. This county has more missing persons per capita than anywhere else in the state."

"That is weird," Dean agrees.

"Yeah."

"Don't phantom attackers usually snatch people from their beds? Jenkins was taken from a parking lot," Dean asks and you make note of what they were talking about.

Phantom attackers?

"Well there are all kinds, you know: Spring-heeled Jacks, Phantom Gassers, they-they take people anywhere, anytime," Sam pauses and looks at your face. "What's up with you?"

"What...what did you just say?"

Sam chuckles a bit and lifts his beer bottle up to take a sip.

"Nevermind... Look, I don't know if this is our kinda gig either ..."

"Yeah, you're right, we should ask around more tomorrow," Dean says finally.

When Sam sees you yawning he smiles a bit before standing up and keeping a bill on the table.

"I saw a motel about five miles back..."

"Whoa, whoa. Easy. Let's have another round," Dean says and you were about to open your mouth when Sam speaks again.

"We should get an early start and don't tell anything Y/n because I saw you yawning."

You open your mouth as you stare at him accusingly but you can't help yawning again. Sam chuckles before picking up his dad's journal.

"Man, you really know how to have fun, don't you Grandma?" Dean says as he grabs his jacket off the chair. "I'm gonna take a leak."

You chuckle and grab the loose papers that Sam had brought.

"Hey, Y/n?" Sam says and you slow your pace of walking a bit.

"What's up?" You smile at a few bikers who were entering the bar.

"Do you really think that Godzilla vs. Mothra is better than the remake?"

"What?" You look at him with a raised eyebrow.

You guys were supposed to be focusing on the missing guy, not Godzilla!

But you couldn't help thinking how adorable it was that he was thinking of Godzilla.

He immediately closes his mouth and starts blushing. "I, uh-"

He stops talking when you guys hear the clanking sound. The sound of chains being dragged on the ground. You widen your eyes and you slow down.

You look at Sam with alarm. He takes out his flashlight and bends down to look at the car you guys were passing through.

You almost shout for him to check faster because you were dying from anticipation. Instead, you take a step forward when you hear a hiss and Sam yelping.

You swear before realizing that it was a cat and falling into a fit of laughter. Sam sighs in relief and you walk away from him to the Impala while still laughing.

"Man, we are so drunk," you say and turn around so you can enter the car. You frown when you don't see Sam.

"Sam?" You look in the car to see if he was inside.

"Sam?" You call for him once again when something hits you on the head. You didn't have time to shout for help because you were immediately knocked unconscious.

~~

You groan when you hear a man shouting. Whatever you were lying down on was cold and hard. You pull your jacket tighter but freeze when you realize what had happened.

The bar. Cat. Sam. Your head.

You immediately sit up and try taking in your surroundings even though it took some time for your eyes to see clearly. Your hands move to your pockets to search for your phone or wallet. Your hands came back empty.

You were in a...cage? It was made of thick iron bars and one side was covered with an iron sheet. When you looked closer, you realized that it was a door.

It was hard to see outside your cage because of how dark it was in there. There was some light coming from cracks in the wooden walls of the room. There was hay scattered on the ground.

A barn? Or a basement?

Whatever it was, you weren't alone.

You slide back in your cage when you see two hooded figures walking to the cage diagonal to yours. There was a man in there who was pressing himself to the opposite corner of his cage, shouting while a hooded figure placed a tray of food in front of him; quite calmly at that. Once the cage was closed, the man hungrily stuffs the food down his throat and moves closer to the side of the cell.

The hooded figures fiddle with some panel but you were too busy trying to break the cage open.

Sometimes, you were so naive.

The figures leave and you sigh a bit in relief. Just when you were about to ask the man where you guys were, he starts speaking to someone. Whoever he was talking to was hidden by the metal sheet in front of you.

"Well, I'll be damned. They're just people," the voice says.

You freeze. Sam? You stay quiet, waiting for him to speak again. If it wasn't him that meant you were stuck here with two men you didn't know and whoever kidnapped you.

"Well, what did you expect?" The man asks as he looks in the same place. He hadn't noticed you yet because you were in the other corner; hiding in the shadows.

"How often do they feed you?" The voice asks again and you feel your heart drop but also relief spread through you. You unknowingly take a step forward into the light.

"Once a day. They use that thing over there to open the cage," the man who's done eating says again.

"And that's-"

"Oh look, Sleeping Beauty is awake," the man says as he looks at you warily but he has a smirk on his face.

You stand up straighter despite the throb in your head and move forward.

"Who?" The other man asks and you speak.

"Sam? Is that you?" You ask meekly as the man who was eating looks at you and then behind the iron wall.

"Y/n," you hear the voice breathe out and you exhale in relief.

Sam was here. That meant that you were safe.

"Y/n, what- are you fine?" He asks frantically and you nod. He must've just realised you were stuck here too. He swears and you here him struggle with cage bars a bit, as if now that he knew that you were in danger now, he would be able to break his cage.

"Y/n?" Sam asks again and you slap yourself mentally.

He couldn't see you, stupid!

"Uh, yeah. I'm fine," you lie. Your head was aching dully.

"Fuck, I was hoping they wouldn't have gotten you to," he says and you can hear fear creeping into his voice.

"Where are we?" You ask again and look at the man in the cage. "Who are you?"

Your mind immediately acknowledges the smells. The smell of rain and soil. Of freshwater.

"Y/n, that's Alvin Jenkins," Sam says and you raise your eyebrows.

"You two know each other?" Alvin asks and you ignore him, only focusing on Sam's voice as it wafted into your cage.

"Where are we?" You ask again.

"Smells like the country," Alvin says and you nod. "And this is a piss-poor excuse of a rescue."

You ignore him once again. "Sam?"

"He's right," he pauses before continuing. "Y/n, they're human."

"What?" You ask and try rattling your cage.

"Yeah. Hey, Alvin, what were you saying?" Sam asks and you feel a twinge of terror running through you.

People are doing this. Locking other people in cages. They must be crazy.

"I'm waiting, man."

"For what?" You ask as you feel the pit in your stomach grow.

"Ned Beatty time, man."

You feel your mouth hang when he says it. If that happened...

"I think that's the least of your worries right now," Sam says as he scoffs at Alvin's reference.

"Oh, yeah?"

"Yeah."

You straighten yourself up and listen carefully to what Sam and Alvin were saying. You couldn't see Sam. A small part of you wished that the stupid wall wasn't there between the two of you.

"What do you think they want?" You ask Sam.

"Depends on who they are," Sam grunts slightly and you raise your eyebrow.

"Bunch of psycho hillbilly rednecks, if you ask me, looking for love in all the wrong places," Alvin says and you look at him incredulously.

~

"Why don't you give it up Sammy. There's no way out."

Sam's voice comes strained as he answers back. "Don't... call... me... Sammy!"

You hear something being yanked out and move to the side of your cage. "What was that? Sam, are you fine?"

"Uh, yeah," he says in a confused voice.

"What is it?" Jenkins asks.

"A bracket," Sam answers back.

You look at Jenkins as he answers sarcastically. "Oh thank god. A bracket, now we got 'em, huh?"

The door of Jenkins' cage suddenly unlocks with a clink and swings open.

You look on with surprise as Jenkins looks at you and Sam.

"Must've been a short. Maybe you knocked somethin 'loose."

He steps cautiously out of the cage.

"I-I think you should get back in there, Jenkins," Sam says and you frown.

He could get help.

"What?" Jenkins wore the same expression as you.

"This isn't right," Sam says once again and you note the suspicion and wariness in his voice.

"Don't you wanna get outta here?

"Yeah. But that was too easy."

"Look, I'm gonna get outta here, I'm gonna send help, okay, don't worry!"

"No! I'm serious! Jenkins! This might be a trap!"

"Bye, Sammy," the man says smugly and turns to you. "Bye, Princess."

"Jenkins!" Sam shouts but in vain.

Jenkins slips out of the room and the cage door closes and re-locks on its own.

"He's going to be fine," you say after a pause, "right?"

"Let's hope," Sam mumbles and you frown.

"Are you okay?" You ask and before he can answer you say what was on your mind. "I wish we were in the same cage. I wish we weren't in a fucking cage, oh my god," you groan. "You're not hurt, right?" You ask before he can respond.

"Yeah," he confirms and you narrow your eyes.

"We don't have the same definition of being hurt, Sam," you roll your eyes slightly, knowing that he could have the most painful wound and say it was okay. It made sense because he was often in situations that didn't allow him to worry about his wounds. But that didn't sit right with you.

He chuckles softly. "I'm fine, Y/n. I swear. Just my head hurts from where they hit me. You?"

"Yeah, same," you answer, your hand softly touching the bump on your head. You immediately wince at the pain that courses through your head.

"Y/n?" Sam asks, hearing you wince.

"No, I'm good. Have a bump the size of a baseball but."

He chuckles. "Can't wait to see that." He pauses. "It's all my fault," Sam says in a low voice and you frown.

"What?" You ask; a bit confused.

"You. You're not supposed to be here, Y/n. You're supposed to be on your Nat Geo internship and not stuck in a cage with me."

You bite the inside of your cheek. You had completely forgotten about everything that was going on in your life before Sam and Dean.

The internship. God. It had been so long since you picked up your camera.

"If they do anything to you..."

You roll your eyes at his negativity, though you felt your heart soar when he trailed off.

Maybe he did feel the same...

"Okay, Sammy, first of all, I'm not a china doll. I'm capable of taking care of myself," you say in a stern and somewhat haughty tone.

"Second, nothing is going to happen to me. As long as you're there with me, nothing bad's gonna happen, okay?" You say softly. "And it's not your fault that I'm coming here. It's because-" I love you. "Of Jess. And you."

Sam sighs softly.

"What?" You hated speaking about this topic.

"It's kind of selfish of me but," he speaks softly in the silent room. Only the two of you here, it was like your own fucked up bubble. "I'm glad you're with me. Here. On hunts. I hated this part of my life. Hated it. And now I mean, I'm in a cage in someone's basement but. These last few months. You and Dean. I don't hate it anymore."

You stare silently at the iron sheet in front of you, your mouth hanging open slightly. You close it and speak, trying to overcome your shock at Sam's confession. "Huh," you say dumbly. Your heart clenches as you carefully piece together your next words.  "Sam, I'm-"

You stop when you hear a shout piercing through the night sky. The screams of agony were crystal clear even if you were in a barn or basement. It was male.

"Sam," you breathe out in fear.

He swears. "Alvin."

That night, Alvin didn't return and neither did any help. You tried sleeping but failed to.

~~

"Is she alright?" You ask Sam as the woman lays against the cage's wall in a sitting position.

"I don't know," Sam replies and you bet that he had his Thinking Face on.

You guys had been talking about who the woman could be.

The night had passed and when the first rays of the sun shone into the room you were in, the hooded figures brought the unconscious woman and put her in Alvin's cage.

She stirs slightly and you move towards her cage. "Are you fine?"

She groans a bit as she looks at you and Sam.

"Are you Sam Winchester? Are you?" She squints her eyes as she tries sitting up straight. "And you. You're Y/n Y/l/n?"

"Yeah, we are," Sam replies cautiously.

"You're cousin's looking for you," she speaks again and you frown.

Cousin?

Only one person would search for you guys and that would be Dean.

"Where is he?" Sam asks again after sighing in relief.

"I, uh- I cuffed him to my car," she says. You exhale and turn back so she couldn't see the frustration on your face.

That meant she was a cop. Or just a woman who handcuffed men to her car.

You hadn't eaten in two days. It made you get irritated at everything. Alvin said that those guys gave him food once a day.

You couldn't help but curse them for not giving you food. You weren't like some girls who could eat less and then wouldn't want to eat anymore. You could eat anything at any time.

"How did you get in here?" You turn and ask, ignoring the rumbling in your stomach.

"The small girl," she says as she tries to remember. "I was talking to her when something hit me on the head. And when I woke up..." She gestures to the cage.

"Dean can't be far behind," Sam says.

"Hopefully."

~~

The door to the room opened with a clink and someone entered the room.

The sound of their shoes crunching the dried leaves on the floor makes the situation seem so eerie.

You hold your breath and you feel your heart racing. You press your palms on the cold floor to stop then from sweating.

"Sam? Are you hurt? Where's Y/n?"

You sigh in relief when you hear Dean's voice.

"No," Sam answers. "She's there."

You raise your hand a bit when you see Dean.

"Damn, it's good to see you guys," he says as he moves away from your cage to Sam's.

"How did you get out of the cuffs?"

"Oh, I know a trick or two," he pauses before talking again. "Oh, these locks look like they're gonna be a bitch."

You hear Sam speak. "Well, there's some kind of automatic control, right there."

"Have you seen 'em?" Dean asks and you shake your head.

"Yeah. They're just people."

"And they jumped you two? Must be getting a little rusty there, kiddo," Dean says and you assume that he's talking to Sam.

After Dean says that he needs a key to open your doors, he left to search for them.

It had been a while since Dean left and you found yourself getting worried.

"He should be here," Sam says as if reading your mind.

"It's a...big house. He's fine," you say right as you hear the clink of the door being opened.

"See, I told you," you say in a 'I-told-you-so' voice.

You lean against your cage's wall, like an eager kid pressing his face against the glass of an aquarium. Come to think of it, you were that eager kid.

You brush it off when you see the man.

Not Dean. But a sickly looking man. He was smiling at you and your eyes widen.

He was holding a rifle in his hand. You swear a bit before scooting behind.

"Such a dirty mouth," he says as he continues smiling at you.

His teeth were black and disgusting.

A wave of fearlessness went through you as you rolled your eyes and scoffed.

"Look who's talking."

His eyes immediately narrow and his face contorts into a snarl.

When you realize what an idiot move you made, you swear again, but in your mind.

"Hey! Leave her alone!" You hear Sam shout and you wince slightly when you realize he must have directed a bitch face at you when you sassed that dude.

The man smiles a bit before walking back to the pole with the controls.

"I'm going to enjoy killing all of you."

You hear a clink and your eyes dart to Kathleen, the cop's cell. Her door wasn't opened.

Your eyes widen when you realize that it was Sam's cage that was opened.

"Sam," you breathe out as you try to look at him by pressing your face against the cage and tilting your head in his direction.

Your heart thuds in your ears and you couldn't hear anything.

If something happened to Sam...

You turn around and bite your lip to keep yourself from shouting out his name.

Your legs feel numb from how long you've sat. But that doesn't matter.

You look to your left when light enters your cage.

Wasn't that the side where the door was?

You feel yourself take in shallow breaths of relief when you look at the person standing there.

His figure was dark and the light shone behind and around him; making him look like an angel of sorts. Your savior. Just by his silhouette could you recognize him.

You get up and wobble into his arms and hug him. His scent, a bit different because of the sweat, invaded your nose and you savored it.

It'd been a long time since you'd seen him. A day and a half is long enough.

You pull yourself away from his embrace and look behind him.

The man who had come in with the rifle before was now on the floor, unconscious. The rifle was lying next to him.

You look up at Sam with wide eyes. His face was slightly flustered from the exhilaration and his mouth was slightly open.

You mumble an apology for your spontaneous hug and try to move away but he holds your shoulders to stop you.

"I didn't know they hit you so hard. You're bleeding," he remarks as he looks at your forehead. He brushes his fingers of his free hand against your forehead and you wince in pain.

"Let's go," you say before he can speak. You knew you were blushing. Hopefully, not much.

You pass the man sprawled on the floor and pick the gun.

"Uh, I tried. It's not gonna work," Sam says as he looks back to you.

"Oh," you say, a bit embarrassed. You throw it and it hits his head.

Hopefully, that knocked him out for more.

"Wait. Let's put this bitch in the cage," you say and Sam turns back.

He nods as he makes his Thinking Face.

You hold one leg and wait for Sam to hold the other so you can drag him into Sam's cage.

You shut the cage and stare at the man with a snarl before walking back and following Sam and Kathleen out of the room cautiously.

Sam pushes you behind him. You roll your eyes and try slapping his hand away but he keeps it there nonetheless.

You guys walk into a barn and you stand straight instead of crouching slightly. You guys were in a barn this whole freakin' time. Wow.

You stop your train of thoughts when you hear a man.

Sam puts his pointer finger on his lips and looks at you.

The pit in your stomach grew even more when you realized that you guys didn't have any weapons.

~~

After a session of hide and go seek in the barn with those creepy men, you and Sam went to search for Dean while Kathleen kept watch on the oldest man of the group.

It was stressful. Hiding from those creeps. You had started hyperventilating halfway through because Sam was hiding somewhere else and you had the crappiest hiding spot.

The fatter man ended finding you. He pushed you to the ground and punched your jaw with his gun hard enough for your skin to split on your cheek to open and bleed.

Sam jumped the man and wrestled with him for the gun while you struggled to get up and blink away the tears from your eyes.

You envied characters in books because of how they could withstand stab wounds and huge cuts. Meanwhile, you teared up after a paper cut.

Sam finally hits the guy hard enough that he faints or dies; you honestly couldn't care less. You just wanted to drag Sam away from there, find Dean and go to a motel and flop yourself down on the bed.

You and Sam walk into the house next to each other in comfortable silence. You close your eyes a bit when you're out in the sun's rays.

You pull your jacket off and tie it around your waist with a tight knot.

When you guys enter the house and cross the foyer, you see Dean shutting the door of a closet.

"Stealing their clothes now, are we?" You ask before noticing his burnt skin and the cut on his forehead.

"Woah, did they frickin' burn you?" You ask, a bit more creeped out than before.

Dean looks down at his burn wound before looking back at you and shrugging. "Well, yeah."

You raise your eyebrows at how unfazed he seemed by a burn while your cheek throbbed painfully. You purse your lips in embarrassment as Dean starts explaining what the men said to him.

~~

"So, State Police and the FBI are gonna be here within the hour. They're gonna want to talk to you. I suggest that you're long gone by then," Officer Kathleen says as she holds her arm.

She had killed the dad of the Bender family because apparently, he had tried to escape. But from the conversations Dean and she had when he tries to free you guys, you could make out that they had done something to her brother.

"Thanks. Hey listen, I don't mean to press our luck, but we're kinda in the middle of nowhere. Think we could catch a ride?" Dean asks and you turn around to take in your surroundings. Of course, you were in the middle of nowhere. Where else would people hunt and kill people?

"Start walking," the officer says as she smiles slightly. "Duck if you see a squad car."

"Sounds great to me, thanks," Sam says and gives a dimply smile to you. You smile a bit.

"Listen, um. I'm sorry about your brother."

"Thank you. It was really hard not knowing what happened to him; I thought it would be easier, once I knew the truth. But ... it isn't, really. Anyway, you should go."

You bite your lip when you listen to her. Your mind gets filled with your brother.

You nod at her slightly before turning around and starting to walk away from her. You guys walk with Dean in the middle. Your eyes kept darting to the burnt raw skin on his arm.

"Never do that again," Dean says abruptly.

You and Sam look at each other quizzically before he asks Dean what he meant.

"Go missing like that."

"You were worried about me," Sam says and Dean looks at him.

"No, I was more worried about Y/n than I was, you."

Sam gives Dean his bitch face and you chuckle weakly.

Dean continues speaking. "All I'm saying is either of you vanish like that again, I'm not looking for ya."

"Okay," you say with a shrug and a smile playing on your lips.

"I'm not," Dean says with a serious face.

"So, you got sidelined by a thirteen-year-old girl, huh?" Sam asks Dean with a smile on his face.

"Oh, shut up."

"Just saying getting rusty there, kiddo."

You chuckle at how Sam used that against Dean.

"Shut up!"

~~

After a good night's sleep in your own motel room; you couldn't bear sleeping on the uninviting couch, you had come to a decision.

How little had you really known about your brother's accident.

Just seeing Officer Kathleen know what happened to her brother sparked something in you. Determination.

You and your parents didn't really talk of Y/b/n after the accident. Come to think of it, you hadn't even known how the accident was caused. Was there another car that hit you? Did you guys crash into something?

You suddenly felt ashamed at your former self. How had you not questioned these things?

You quickly dress after taking a bath and walk over to the boy's room nervously.

You knock on it and Sam opens the door with a smile that seemed to lighten your dulled spirits.

"Good morning, Y/n," he says as he lets you in. "How was sleep?"

"Good," you say with a forced smile. You turn around and nod at Dean who was at the table, eating something. You fiddle with your flannel's sleeves and Sam's seems to notice.

"What's wrong?" Sam asks with furrowed eyebrows.

"Uh, I wouldn't say anything is wrong. Far from wrong, actually-" you stop your rambling when you see Sam and Dean raise their eyebrows at you.

You sigh and walk over to the bed and sit down. You play with your fingers as you open your mouth to speak.

Why were you so nervous!? A voice in your head asks.

"I'm going to visit my parents. It's been really long since I've seen them," you look up and see Sam's questioning look change into a smile and Dean's expression becoming... uncomfortable?

"That's great!" Sam exclaims and walks over to the kitchen to get his food, maybe.

"But I'll come back. After I...sort things out," you say as you continue looking at Dean's expression. Maybe he thought that you were leaving them.

You scoff at your thought. All you were was a burden on them. He'd more likely be relieved than sad.

"How about you stay with your parents where it's safe?" Sam says as he shrugs innocently; as if he just thought of the idea.

You and Dean roll your eyes at the same time. "Yeah, you're not getting rid of me that easy," you smile at Sam cheekily and he shakes his head with a smile.

"God, I'm starving. Where are we going for breakfast?" You ask as your stomach rumbles.

Dean chuckles light-heartedly when he hears the loud rumbling of your stomach and his chair scrapes the ground as he gets up. He grabs his jacket from his bed and before walking to the door says: "Ah! A girl after my own heart."

"Didn't you just eat?" Sam asks Dean with a raised eyebrow.

"Yeah, so?" He asks and you roll your eyes while Sam chuckles. You guys follow him to the Impala outside; eating and the three of you together the only sense of normalcy in your lives for now.
