"By 'old friend' you mean...?" Sam waits for Dean to complete his sentence.
"Friend that's not new," Dean says blatantly and you chuckle.
"Ugh, that sass," you sigh.
Sam turns back to look at you and smiles. You see his eyes flick to your left side but you ignore it.
"So, her name's Cassie, huh?" Sam asks Dean while folding his arms. You could see how much Sam was enjoying this. "You never mentioned her."
You guys were on your way to Pennsylvania when Cassie, Dean's friend, called him with news that her dad had died the previous night and she thought something...not natural happened to him.
"Didn't I?"
"No."
"Yeah, we went out."
"You mean, you dated someone?" Sam asks, highly amused. Before he can speak again you frown and ask: "What does that mean?"
Sam looks back with a sly smile while Dean stares ahead at the road, quite irritated that you guys were discussing his sex life.
"One night stands, Y/n," Sam says and you make a fish face and nod awkwardly when you understand.
"Dad and I were working a case in Athens, Ohio and she was finishing up college. We went out for a couple of weeks."
"And?" Sam pushes Dean for answers but he just shrugs.
"Look, it's terrible about her dad but it kind of sounds like a standard car accident." As much as you wanted to help the girl, you nodded. "I'm not seeing how it fits what we do."
Sam hesitates before asking again. "Which, by the way, how does she know what we do?" You purse your lips when you realize how that didn't cross your mind.
Another uncomfortable silence.
"You told her. You told her the secret. Our family's rule number one we do what we do and we shut up about it," Sam slightly shouts and you wince. "For a year and a half, I do nothing but lie to Jessica and you go out with this chick to Ohio a couple of times and you tell her everything!"
"Well, you told everything to Y/n, too!" Dean counters back and you feel the pit in your stomach grow when your name is mentioned.
"Woah, I-"
"She's different! She-" Sam says without any reason for why you were different. He just huffs out a breath and turns to look out the window after turning to give a look.
You raise your eyebrows slightly and mumble an 'okay' before looking out the window too.
~~
You guys walk into the newspaper agency's building. If you could use one word to describe it, you would use boring. The gray walls were plain except for the small articles pinned up in various places. The desks were gray and the people working seemed to be very dull. In the middle of the room was a tall man standing with a woman and a shorter man whose backs were facing you.
The men walk away after having a conversation and the woman with the curly hair finally turns around and looks at the three of you. Dean gives her a small smile and nods as she makes her way over to him.
You and Sam look on as it looks like a scene right out of a chick-flick. Sam lets out an adorable snort and you look up at him and smile.
"This my brother Sam and our friend Y/n," Dean gestures to the two of you after them staring at each other for like ten seconds. She smiles slightly at the two of you but turns her attention back to Dean.
"The ST is real," you whisper to Sam as quietly as you could.
"What?" He smiles softly.
"Sexual tension," you whisper again and he covers up his chuckle by coughing. Dean and Cassie look over at the two of you and you just smile again.
~~
"Let's go. Another accident," Dean shakes you awake and you groan. You look at your wristwatch and look at the time.
"Whose?"
"The newspaper editor we saw yesterday," Dean replies and your mind goes back to the newspaper building. The short man. You frown. You had just seen him the day before and now...
After talking to Cassie the previous night about her dad's death and his friend's death, you guys crashed a near-by motel for the night.
On your way to the crash site, you managed to get ten more minutes of shut-eye.
You make your way to the accident, weaving through officials and bystanders.
It was like a bullet hit you. One look at the gray car with its windows shattered and front bent up, a sharp pain went through your head and you swayed on your feet. You clenched your eyes and gritted your teeth.
"Y/n!" Sam shouts when you almost fall. He holds your arm and looks at you with furrowed eyebrows.
The pain was gone as soon as it came and you breathed out. "I'm fine. I'm fine." You push him away and stand on your own, wobbling a bit on your feet.
Sam let go of you reluctantly but kept his eyes on you the whole time.
~~
While you were changing in the bathroom for interrogating locals, Sam started talking to Dean about Cassie.
"I'll say this for her, she's fearless," Sam says as he walks over to Dean tying his tie in front of the mirror. Dean chuckles and hums in agreement.
"Bet she kicked your ass a couple of times."
Dean gives Sam a look before resuming making his tie.
"What's interesting is you guys never really look at each other at the same time. You look at her when she's not lookin'. She checks you out when you look away," Sam straightens his suit.
Dean, who was already irritated, responded quickly. "So like you and
Y/n?" He smirks.
Sam sputters and looks at his brother in confusion. "Wh-what? I don't-"
Sam's cheeks fluster and he sets his lips in a thin, hard line to keep him from blabbering anymore. "Don't divert the conversation."
"I'm just saying, man. It's just an interesting observation," Dean remarks, smirking at how the tables had turned.
"We have more pressing issues at hand," Sam says sternly and Dean chuckles.
"Yeah, all right, big man."
~~
"You heard of the Flying Dutchman?"
"Ghost ship," you say as you walk down the boardwalk with the boys. You had chosen to wear your sneakers with a black skirt, shirt, and blazer since you didn't bring along your heels. You were lucky that your sneakers were black and actually looked good with your outfit. Also for the fact that no one noticed the attire. It had been raining so the path was wet and puddles were everywhere.
A local had mentioned a string of murders that had occurred in the '60s. Black men had been kidnapped and taken in a huge black scary looking truck. The man said that he wasn't even sure if investigations were held for the kidnappings because of the racial differences back then.
"Infused with the captain's evil spirit," Sam completes for you and you huff.
"What if we're dealing with the same thing? Phantom truck who's the extension of some bastard ghost reenacting past crimes," Dean says.
"Victims have been dark-skinned men," you remark.
"It's more than that. They all seem to be connected to Cassie and her family."
"Alright, well you work that angle. Go talk to her," Sam says with a sly smile.
"Yeah, I will."
"Oh, and you might also want to mention that other thing."
"What other thing?" Dean stops walking and faces Sam.
"The serious unfinished business. Dean, what is going on between you two?"
"Maybe we were a bit more involved than I said."
"Oh, okay," Sam says while exaggeratedly nodding.
"Okay, a lot more, maybe," Dean says and you find yourself smiling. Sam chuckles as he continues speaking. "And I told her about what we do and I shouldn't have."
"Now, look man, everybody's gotta open up to someone sometime," Sam says in a soft voice and he looks at you for a moment before looking back at Dean. You didn't notice, of course.
"Yeah, I don't. I was stupid to get that close. I mean, look how it ended."
You give him a smug smile because seeing Dean like this was very rare.
"Would you guys stop?!"
You look up at Sam and see that he was smiling too.
"Blink or something?!" Dean says again and the smile goes of Sam's face.
"You loved her," he says.
Dean turns around and walks towards the Impala. You raised your eyebrows as you and Sam followed. "You were in love with her, but you dumped her?" He asks.
"Shit," you say after Dean's look. "She dumped you."
"Both of you get in the car," Dean says before shutting the door with a loud bang.
You shrug at Sam before getting into the car yourself.
~~
"So, what do you want to do?" You ask Sam as you flop down on the bed.
"What do you mean?" He looks up from his laptop at you.
"Since Dean is getting his freak on with Cassie, we should do something," you say.
Sam raises his eyebrows and chuckles. "What do you want to do?"
Your mind searches for activities when you sit up straight and swear.
"What'd you forget now?"
Of course, he knew the face I made when I forget something, you think.
You rummage through your bag and take out your phone. "I have to call my parents. It's been a while.
Sam shuts his laptop and looks at you. "Why don't you visit them? Dean and I will take care of it."
"Take care of what?" You ask and look at him.
"The demon that killed Jessica," he says while biting the inside of his cheek. Talking about Jess was still tough for him as it was for you.
You nod a bit and look down. "Can you teach me?"
He raises his eyebrows and asks you slowly and cautiously. "Teach you what?"
"How to defend myself," you look at him, blushing a bit at your peculiar request.
He sighs and hesitates. "Are you sure?"
"I think so," you chuckle.
He stands up and sets his face. "Come on, then."
"Wait, seriously?!" Your eyes widen and he nods with an eyebrow raised.
You take a deep breath and smile.
"Uh, okay. Um- let me change." You look down at your skirt and look up at him. He gestures for you to continue and you exhale.
Why were you so nervous?
~
"When someone is gonna you like this," he swings his fist to your face slowly, "you want to bring your hand up and block it."
You follow as he says and bring your arm up. You look down making sure your stance is right and look back up at him.
"The bones in your forearm are strong, so use that to your advantage."
You nod and bite your lip.
You were wearing your shorts and your dad's old T-shirt that was really huge so it came up to the middle of your thighs. Sam had looked at you with raised eyebrows before shaking his head. You saw a smile pass through his face for a moment and you smiled yourself.
"Okay, those are the basics," Sam says and you step back.
"What about the complex stuff?" You ask.
"Uh, I don't think you're ready for that," he says with furrowed eyebrows and you raise an eyebrow.
"Try me."
Sam chuckles at your taunt. He looks down while smiling and shakes his head.
"Um, okay. This isn't that tough but it's important," he walks to go behind you. "When someone, uh, grabs you from behind..."
He trails off as his arms wrap around you. He was careful to make the circle of his arms big enough to not touch you. Your breath still hitches when you feel the heat radiate from his body.
You hum in response and feel blood pumping into your cheeks.
"Like a bear attack hug from the back," he says and chuckles, his body vibrating behind yours.
"Wasn't that funny, Winchester," you say and smile when you can basically hear his bitch face before he speaks again. He didn't even have to speak out; all he had to was whisper because of how close you guys were.
"So, swing your head back and once the person's caught off guard, wrench out of their hold," Sam says. You suddenly hold your breath when you realize that his hands were touching you and were loosely hanging around your waist.
"Okay," you try not to hyperventilate at how close you were and take a deep breath. "Okay."
Your motion was fluid. You went so quickly that you didn't have time to register what you were doing. It was as if instinct had taken over you. One second, Sam was behind you and now he was bent over because you were twisting his arm behind his back. As soon as you pushed your head back, you turned around and grabbed his hand and twisted it. When you realized what you were doing, you quickly let go of him and step back.
"Oh shit! Sam, I'm so sorry!" You put one hand over your mouth and the other on his arm as he stands up with blood trickling down his lip. His face was scrunched up as he took a deep breath.
Without thinking, you brush your fingers over his lips to wipe the blood off. And it was as if time stopped, you and Sam seemed to stare at each other with your fingers still on his lip.
He looked heavenly. He was a bit flustered and his chin was still red from the blood.
You take a deep breath and wipe your hand on your clothes before taking a small step back.
"How did- how did you do that?" He asks as he recovers from whatever that just happened.
"I don't know. It was like... instinct," you frown and sit down on your bed.
"Well, you have good instinct," Sam sits on his bed and looks at you again while licking the blood off his lip. He looked at you perplexed.
"What?" You sigh.
"Nothing," Sam half-smiles and looks down before looking at you again.
"You sure you fine?" You ask again before pushing yourself back on your bed. Sam looked at your every movement. He slightly nodded and closed his mouth when he realized it was hanging.
"I'm sleeping," you say and turn to face the other direction and nuzzle into your pillow. You roll your eyes mentally at yourself. You weren't tired. You just made things very awkward. He's probably as confused as you were. You had no clue how you did that. You probably made a fool of yourself.
Sam looked at you, his cheeks a bit flustered and his mouth hanging. With the way you had bent your knees a bit, your T-shirt rode up and he could see your shorts that were hidden under them. He chuckles softly when he sees the 'Harry Potter' design.
He suddenly turns away after taking a sharp breath. He had been staring at you. Just like Dean had said. A feeling of warmth went through him and he exhaled sharply as his eyes darted around the room.
He had felt that feeling before. He had felt it when he had first met you. He had felt it with Jess. He took a deep breath. It couldn't be what he thought it was. It couldn't. He wasn't ready.
~~
"Where were you last night?" You wiggle your eyebrows at Dean as he approaches you guys.
Sam had shown the officer his fake ID and told the cop that you were with him.
Another murder had taken place in the morning. The mayor's.
Cassie had accused the mayor of being racist related to the deaths of the men in his town. He told her to ask her mom how racist he really was. It was a weird way to deflect the conversation, Cassie mentioned to you later, with much irritation. He had shocked her a bit by bringing up her mother.
"You didn't get back to the motel," Sam says with a smirk.
You mouth out, "They got their freak on."
Sam tries not to chuckle by pressing his lips together but ends up smiling. His dimples show and you bite on the inside of your cheek. You had really embarrassed yourself last night but he looks pretty unfazed by it. What bothered you the most was how you tackled him.
It was probably because he was off-guard. Maybe... Just maybe, he was distracted by-
"So, what happened?" You hear Dean saying distantly and you notice that Sam and Dean had walked off. You huff and hurry behind them. You catch Sam saying the words 'every bone crushed' and 'internal organs were pudding'. You finally catch up to their long strides.
"Cops don't know what happened but they think something ran him over," you say as you rub your hands together. It was snowing and everything was covered in the fluffy white mass.
"Something like a truck?" Dean asks and stops walking.
"Yep," you and Sam say at the same time.
"Tracks?"
"Nope," Sam says this time.
"What was the mayor doing here?" Dean asks and surveys the area before him. The yellow tape and police officers and officials crowding the area.
"He owned the property. Bought it a few weeks ago," Sam says again.
"Yeah, but he's white. Doesn't fit the pattern," Dean says and you and Sam shrug.
"And he didn't kill him up the road," you say. "That doesn't match the pattern either."
~~
"Okay, thanks," you smile at the clerk once more before leaving the courthouse with Sam. Sam calls Dean as you guys leave and start reading out what you guys got to know from his small leather diary.
"Okay, the courthouse records show that Mr. and Mrs. Mayor bought an abandoned property. The previous owner was the Dorian family, for like a hundred and fifty years...What?... Well, I pulled a bunch of paper upon the Dorian place, it must have been in bad shape when the mayor bought it... First thing he did was bulldoze the place... Uh, the third of last month."
Sam looks at you as you continue walking. He raises his eyebrows and makes his Thinking Face. He hangs up and looks at you.
"It's a spirit. Mostly this guy named Cyrus Dorian" he says and you breathe out.
"So burn his remains," you say.
"Yeah, but he went missing," Sam responds and you bite your lip.
"Well," you say, "that is quite a problem, then."
~~
"Just open the magazine by pressing the release," Dean says as he presses a small button on the handle of the gun. "Check if there's any ammunition in the slide and if there's not, you can remove the slide and the barrel and then clean it."
Dean was teaching you how to dismantle and clean a gun for the second time. Since he was too fast the first time you awkwardly asked if he could explain again. He just sighed but complied.
You take the gun from Dean and gingerly handle it. Dean looked on as you did what he said to do. You take the cloth from the table and start cleaning the barrel and slide of the gun.
Dean's phone rings and he puts his finger up; indicating for you to stop. You look at Sam who was doing some research on his laptop on Cyrus on the bed.
"It's Cassie," says Dean before picking up. His face immediately contorts in fear and you feel the pit in your stomach grow.
You could hear the distressed shouts Cassie was making from the other end of the line.
~
"Cyrus Dorian died more than forty years ago," Mrs. Robinson, Cassie's mom says as you settle down next to Sam. The couch you were sitting on was small and your shoulders were touching.
"How do you know he died, Mrs. Robinson? The paper said he went missing," Dean asks with furrowed eyebrows. Your mouth hangs open at the accusatory question.
"We were all very young. I dated Cyrus awhile. I- I was also seeing Martin, in secret of course, because, interracial couples didn't go over too well then. When I broke it off with Cyrus, and when I found out about Martin ... I don't know, he, he changed. His, his hatred. His hatred was frightening.
"The murders," you say and Mrs. Robinson continues.
"There were rumors. People of color disappearing into some kind of a truck. Nothing was ever done. Martin and uh, Martin and I, we were gonna be uh, married in that little church near here, but uh, last minute we decided to elope because we didn't want all the attention.
"And Cyrus?"
"The day we set for the wedding, was the day someone set fire to the church," she starts sobbing as she explains. "There was a children's choir practice in there! They all died."
"Did the attacks stop after that?" Sam asks, shifting uncomfortably on the couch.
"No!" She sobs. "There was one more. One night, that truck came for Martin. Cyrus beat him something terrible. But Martin, you see, Martin got loose, and he started hitting Cyrus and he just kept hitting him and h- hitting him!"
"Why didn't you call the cops?" You asked.
"This was forty years ago!" Her eyes shined as she continues talking. "He called on his friends, Clayton Soames and Jimmy Anderson, and they put Cyrus's body into the truck and rolled it into the swamp at the edge of his land and all three of them kept that secret all these years."
"And now all three are gone," Sam says as he purses his lips.
"So is Mayor Todd. Now he said, that you of all people would know that he is not a racist. Why would he say that?"
"He was a good man. He was a young deputy back then, investigating Cyrus's disappearance. Once I figured out what Martin and the others had done, I ... I did nothing. Because he also knew what Cyrus had done."
"Why didn't you tell me?" Cassie asks and Dean looks at her.
"I thought I was protecting him. And now there's no one left to protect!" The old woman wails.
Dean looks at Cassie. "Yes, there is."
~~
"So burning the body had no effect on that thing?" Sam asks as you gawk at the big, black, definitely scary looking truck in front of you guys. Well, the ghost truck because the actual one was behind you.
You guys had used towtruck to pull the truck out of the swamp. You guys salted and burned Cyrus' body but guess that didn't do anything. The light from the ghost truck's headlight was so strong that you had to shield your eyes.
"Oh, sure it did. Now it's really pissed," Dean says and you swear.
"This is not how I'm gonna die!"
"Chill, Y/n," Dean says as he moves to the Impala.
"Where're you going?" You ask, the pit in your stomach a void now.
"I'll distract this bitch. You and Sam, burn that truck," Dean gets into the car and misses yours and Sam's complaints on how to burn a friggin' car.
Sam takes his map out when Dean calls him. The pressure on finding a way to not get Dean killed made your blood pump in your ears and your heart race.
"The church!" You say when Sam hangs up on Dean. "Hallowed ground, right? Ghosts can't pass."
"You're right," Sam says and picks his phone up again.
"Dean, where are you?" You hold the flashlight above the map so Sam can see it properly. Sam gives Dean directions to the church as you nibble on your lip.
"Stop exactly seven-tenths of a mile, Dean," Sam says and you exhale sharply. This was it.
Sam looks over to you and shares an anxious look before looking down at the map again.
"Dean. You still there?" You look at him with furrowed eyebrows. "Dean? You're where the church was... The place Cyrus burned down, murdered all those kids... Church ground is hallowed ground, whether the church is still there or not. Evil spirits cross over hallowed ground, sometimes they're destroyed. So we figured, maybe, that would get rid of it... Huh. Honestly, that thought hadn't occurred to me," Sam says and winks at you.
You chuckle and he brings the phone down.
"So, he's fine?"
"Yeah, he is," Sam chuckles and looks down.
"It's snowing," you say absent-mindedly as you turn around and try collecting the white snowflakes in your hand.
Sam smiles and looked at you. You looked like a small kid; amused by the snowfall. After a while, he joins you in acting like a kid, twirling and building mini snowmen from the little amount of snow on the ground, only to frowned upon by Dean.
~~
You and Sam lean against the Impala as Dean talks to Cassie.
"Doesn't feel like we saved anybody," you mutter as you fiddle with your flannel's sleeves.
"Why? We saved Cassie and her mom," Sam looks down at you.
You look at him. His hands were in his pockets and he looked laid back. You smile a bit at him and look back down again before frowning.
"Yeah but four people died,"
Sam sighs and scratches his head. "We save some and we lose some."
Before you can answer, he elbows you slightly. "Get in. Looks like they're almost done."
You look at Dean and Cassie and nod.
"Wait, I want to talk to her."
Before Sam can stop you, you walk over to Cassie after Dean leaves.
"Hey," you say hesitantly.
"Hi," she says back and smiles.
"I'm sorry for your loss," you say and you nod a bit. You're instantly reminded of your brother and speak again. "I lost...someone too in a car accident so..."
"Oh! I'm sorry," she pauses before asking you again. "May I ask who it was?"
"My brother. Y/b/n," you chuckle humourlessly when she grimaces. You swallow heavily. "Yeah, I- uh" you scratch at your head, "I just wanted to give my condolences and...yeah." You look at her awkwardly. She gives you a sad smile and hugs you.
"Thank you, Y/n."
Sam turns to Dean after they look at you talking to Cassie.
"You meet someone like her... Ever make you think it's worth it? Putting everything thing else on hold, doing what we do?"
"Talking about me or you?" Dean asks while raising his eyebrow and Sam clenches his jaw before looking back at the two of you.
"Why don't you wake me up when it's my turn to drive?" Dean says when Sam doesn't answer him and puts on sunglasses.
You enter the car with a huff.
"What'd I miss?" You ask when you see Dean leaning back in the seat with sunglasses on.
"Nothing," Sam mutters and you lean back into your seat, getting comfortable.
You just shrug and put on your earphones and listen to your favorite playlist.
~~
"Hey mom, " you speak into your phone. You guys had stopped at a gas station and you were standing a but further from the Impala yo talk to your parents.
"Hey honey. What's it been, six months?" She asks in a sarcastic tone?
You chuckle. It had been a while since you had heard her talk.
"Yeah. We really thought you were dead," she continues.
"Stop!" You whine with a smile on your face. "It's been like three months," you cringe.
"Yeah, because you can't call us every week," she says and you roll your eyes.
"Yeah, I was being an ass," you say slowly, "but I promise I will call every week!"
"Uh huh. Anyways, how's it been going with- what were their names, Sam and Dean?" She puts emphasis on their names.
"It's fine. I'm certainly meeting... interesting people and doing interesting things," you nod to yourself.
"If that means you're doing drugs, young lady, I swear-"
"No, I'm not doing drugs, Mom!" You were 21 and your mom was lecturing you on drugs. Amazing.
"Well then what does interesting mean?"
"Just...interesting stuff," you say.
"Okay, how about you talk to your dad now," your mom says and you mumble a 'yes'.
Talking to your parents was... rejuvenating. It was like the good thing in the world of darkness. Your mom's sarcasm and your dad's protectiveness, it gave you hope.
You walked back to the Impala with a stupid grin on your face.
