As Ando-san and I were organizing the room, the sun was quickly setting.
âFu~, Ando-san, thank you for your hard work.â
âOh no, you too, Matsuo-san.â
âWell, letâs prepare dinner.â
âThen, Iâll make omelet rice.â
âWoohoo!â
When I raised my hand, Ando-san smiled at me.
âWhat do you want to do? Can I help?â
âThen ⦠Matsuo-san, please help me with the ketchup rice.â
âThatâs good. Weâll work togetherâ
âHmm?â
Ando-san widened her eyes
âAh, sorry. Did I say something weird?â
âNo, itâs nothing. â¦.â
Ando-san looked downwards.
âT-then Iâll chop the vegetables. Matsuo-san, you are in charge of frying them in a pan.â
âUnderstoodâ I said, smiling.
Ando-san was chopping vegetables one after another on the cutting board with great dexterity.
âReally though, Ando-san, you are a really good cook. And you can also do all the housework.â
I said casually, and she stopped.
â⦠all the time, Iâve been left at home to do the housework.â
âAtâ¦.your uncleâs house?â
âYes.â
âI see,⦠Ando-san, you really are a hard worker.â
I said, and tears came to Ando-sanâs eyes again.
âAre you okay?â
âY-yes, The onions are a little â¦â¦â
She made excuses like that, and I watched her closely, amused.
âAnd itâs ready.â
âThen Iâll cook the ketchup rice.â
I wasnât much of a cook, but I could at least do that.
âWow, thatâs amazing. You can easily lift a heavy frying pan. You must be very strong, Matsuo-san.â
âWell, I was an athlete in high school.â
âWhich club were you in?â
âBaseball club. I was a regular on the team, I think.â
âThatâs amazing. Um⦠were you popular?â
âHmm? Well, the ace guy was popular. So not much for me, I guess.â
âI-I see. â¦â
For some reason, she looked a little relieved.
âPerhaps you like baseball?â
âHeh? Ah, um⦠thatâs right.â
âThen, how about playing catch together next time, just to relax?â
âA-ah, but Iâm not that athletic. â¦â
âI see. Well, let me know if you feel up to it.â
Ando-san nodded her head.
While we were talking, the ketchup rice was ready.
âAndo-san. Please.â
âYes.â
I passed it onto her, and Ando-san spread eggs all over the frying pan. Then she poured the ketchup rice I had made into the pan.
And then, as if by magic, thump, twirl, and twirl.
In no time at all, the ketchup rice was wrapped in the egg.
âItâs done.â
âWow, thatâs amazing. Ando-san, youâve done a wonderful job.â
âN-No, Itâs nothing specialâ
She blushed.
âAh, Matsuo-san. Can you please go ahead and get the table ready?â
âYes, okay.â
I wiped the table and prepared spoons, excited to be able to eat the omu-rice that was sure to be delicious.
Then, Ando-san brought the omelet-rice.
âThank you for waiting.â
She placed it on the table.
âYay~⦠Huh?â
I looked at the omelet and saw that it had words written on it in ketchup.
THANK YOU, MATSUO-SAN
Surprised, I looked at Ando-san in front of me.
She immediately turned her blushing face away from me, as if she was deeply embarrassed.
âAndo-sanâ
I called out, and she looked up.
âThank you too.â
When I said this, her eyes watered again.
But she smiled at me.
âCome on, letâs eat.â
âYes.â
And then we both enjoyed the delicious omu-rice together.
