I was driving around on my day off.
âWow, Matsuo-san. I canât believe you have a car.â
âHahaha, Itâs a used one, I bought with a loan.â
âBut Iâm really sorry. For my sakeâ¦â
âItâs okay. Iâm the one who wants to do it for you, Ando-san.â
âMatsuo-san â¦â
Then we arrived at Ando-sanâs apartment. â¦
ââ¦â¦T-this. Itâs quite terrific.â
It couldnât even be called a good place to live by any stretch of the imagination.
The building was probably quite old, and it seemed to be titled a bit. It was really unfortunate that a young blossoming college girl was living in such a place.
âI-Itâs kind of embarrassing. â¦â
âNo, itâs nothing to be ashamed of. Youâve done a great job so far.â
ââ¦Yes.â
Ando-san was about to burst into tears again, so I gently patted her back. Then the two of us loaded Ando-sanâs belongings from her room into the car. Since there was so little stuff, the move was completed in just one trip back and forth.
âUm, Matsuo-san.â
âHmm?â
âI know itâs a little late for this, but are you sure you want to do this? Iâll be imposing on you, Matsuo-sanâ¦â
I gently put my hand on her head.
âItâs really no problem for me. Besides, I canât leave you alone.â
ââ¦Thank you.â
Then we set up her stuff in my room.
âIâm sorry, I have limited storage space in my one-bedroom apartment. If it was possible, I would have made a proper division.â
âDonât worry about that.â
Ando-san waved her hand hurriedly and said,
âWell then⦠are you hungry?â
âAh, shall I make it?â
âAs much as Iâd love to eat Ando-sanâs delicious home-cooked meals, Iâm pretty sure you are tired after moving and all.â
I went to the kitchen and opened a cabinet there.
âSometimes, this is good, isnât it?â
âAh, cup noodles. â¦â
Ando-san widened her eyes slightly.
âYou donât like it?â
âNo, itâs not like that. Itâs just I havenât eaten cup noodles for a long time.â
âReally?â
âYes. Ever since I entered universityâ¦because cup noodles are actually expensive.â
âHuh? Isnât it rather a cheap meal?â
âWell, thatâs true. But if you divide it by the day, the rice ends up being cheaper as a result. I think one meal is roughly 20 to 30 yen.â
âThatâs certainly cheaper. Ando-san, how do you know such things?â
âI am really poor, so I learned a lot.â
âI seeâ¦.Then, shall we splurge a little today?â
I shook the cup noodles and said a little jokingly.
âYes.â
Ando-san nodded with a smile.
âIâll be back in a minute.â
I quickly boiled water. I poured the boiling water into a cup of noodles and brought it to Ando-san.
âWhich one do you prefer, soy sauce or seafood?â
âMatsuo-san, which one do you prefer?â
âWhich one do you prefer, Ando-san?â
I returned it with a question,â¦
ââ¦, then soy sauce.â
âHere you go.â
I offered it to her, and Ando-san bowed her head.
âAh, itâs been three minutes,â
I said.
I flipped the lid, and the aroma of savory seafood tickled my nostrils.
ââ¦. Ah, it smells so good.â
Ando-san also mumbled,
âWell then, Shall we eat?â
âYes.â
âHereâs your chopstick.â
âThank you.â
And then we both clasped our hands together,
âItadakimasu.â
I was really hungry, so I slurped the noodles quickly.
âYeah, itâs really delicious.â
Ando-san, on the other hand, was slurping her noodles a little more carefully, as it had been a while since she had had a cup of noodles.
ââ¦â¦ Delicious.â
âGood to hear.â
Churuchuru, slurping the noodles.
Ando-sanâs eyes filled with tears again.
âAre you okay?â
â⦠Iâm sorry. The taste of these cup noodles is very gentle.â
âAfter all, isnât it good once in a while?
ââ¦â¦ yes.â
âOh, Right.â
I got up and headed for the fridge.
âHereâs a little something to add on top.â
I handed Ando-san an egg.
âItâs really bad for your body, but itâs delicious if you put it in.â
âIâll try it.â
Ando-san cracked the egg and put it into the noodle cup. After stirring a little, she slurped the noodles again.
ââ¦Ahâ¦itâs even delicious and tender.â
âEggs are great, arenât they?â
âDo you like eggs?â She asked me,
âI like eggs.â
âThen, shall we have omelet rice tonight?â
âEh? You can make omelette rice? Isnât it quite hard?â
âI can make it.â
Ando-san smiled at me.
âThen, Iâve got something to look forward to tonight.â
âUmm, what will you do for the night?â
âFor the time being, letâs tidy up the room a little more. We need to divide the space so that you can live comfortably.â
âYou donât have to worry about me. I prefer not to interfere with Matsuo-sanâs life.â
âAndo-san.â
I placed my hand on her slender shoulder..
âYou need to rely on me more.â
When she opened her eyes, more tears spilled out.
ââ¦I Thank you for everything.â
She will probably shed tears for a while,
Still, someday.
Iâll be happy if she shows me a smile from the bottom of her heart.
âHey, Ando-san. Hey, can I have your cup noodles?â
âAh, yes. Here you go.â
âYou can have mine instead.â
ây-yes. â¦â
âHmm? Whatâs wrong?â
âN-no ⦠itâs nothing.â
For some reason, Ando-sanâs cheeks were flushed and she turned her face down.
I ate the cup of noodles she was eating, tilting my head.
âYes, itâs delicious. Soy sauce is delicious, too.â
âI-Is that so?â
âHere, donât be shy, Ando-san.â
I said, and Ando-san sipped my cup of noodles, hesitantly.
ââ¦W-wow.â
âSeafood is good too, right?â
âYes, it is,â¦.â
For some reason, Ando-san kept blushing the whole time.
