âWelcome!â
During this early summer season, convenience stores are a temporary oasis.
âHere you go, your changeâ
I was working hard as a cashier at a convenience store.
âThank you very much!â
My voice echoed through the store.
âUm, Matsuo-san.â
I turned around and saw a petite, slender, bobbed-haired girl coming towards me.
âAndo-san, whatâs wrong?â
âWhat else would you like me to fry?â
âLet me think⦠Maybe add some sausage? And maybe an American hotdog too?â
âGot it.â
She smiled and nodded.
âAndo-san, like I said before, weâre the same age so letâs drop the honorifics, okay?â
âNot happening, Matsuo-san, you are my senior.â
âHaha, Ando-san, you are so serious. Compared to you, â¦â
âTsugutsugu~! How do you do this~?â
A typical JK gal said to me.
âKoshiba, you still donât know how to operate the cash register?â
âAh, thatâs cruel! Thatâs power harassment!â
âNo, itâs a love whip. Here, Iâll teach you one more time, so write it down.â
âFaa~â
Koshiba replied with a yawn.
âU-Um, Koshiba-san.â
âHm? Hiyorin, whatâs wrong?â
âHey, Koshiba. Donât call her by a nickname. Call her Ando-san or Hiyori-san.â
âIsnât it fine, right, Hiyorin?â
âY-yes, Why do you call Matsuo-san, Tsugutsugu?â
âBecause my name is Hidetsugu, so Iâm Tsugu.â
âAh, I see.â
âI mean, the name sounds like an unsuccessful warlord, right?â
âThere are too many points to pick on. What do you mean by an unsuccessful warlord? Is he an idol or something?â
âBuhahah! Tsugutsugu, you are so funny!â
âManager! Please cut Koshibaâs hourly wage!â
âNoo~~, Tsugutsugu no baka~!â
âHah, what a noisy womanâ
I let out a sigh.
âWell then, Matsuo-san. Iâll be frying.â
âYeah, thanks, Ando-san.â
âYes.â
She smiled and walked into the fryer room.
âYou really should learn from Ando-san.â
âWhatâs with you, Tsugu? You like Hiyorin?â
âHuh? I mean, I do think Ando-san is cute. Sheâs a classmate of mine from college, and we work together part-time.â
âHmmm~?â
âWhatâs with those eyes?â
âBut Hiyorin⦠No, itâs nothing.â
âLook, donât waste your time talking, at least learn the cash register quickly.â
âWah~n, you power-harassing demon, Tsugutsugu!â
âIâm begging you, please be quiet.â
I pressed my forehead.
*****
âWell then, Tsugtsugu, Hiyorin, Later~!â
Unexpectedly, Koshiba mounted her bicycle and dashed off.
âHmmm, you have quite a good trunk strengthâ
âMatsuo-san?
Ando-san, who was standing next to me, tilted her head.
âNo, itâs nothing. Shall we go home then?â
âYes.â
We started walking side by side.
She and I were in the same year of college and in the same department. However, we never had a conversation during our first year of college. I had at least known who she was for a while. She came to the convenience store where I worked about a month ago.
âHmm, itâs been bothering me for a while.â
âY-yeah.â
âAndo-sanâ¦â
âW-What is it?â
âYouâre so thin. Are you eating properly?
At first I thought she was slender and cute. But as the days went by, I felt like she was getting thinner and thinner. â¦.
âY-yes, Iâm eating well.â
âReally? What are you eating?â
âUh, letâs see⦠⦠bean sprouts.â
âIs that a side dish?
âNo, itâs the .. main course.â
âSprouts as main course?â
âYes. â¦.â
âI mean, yeah, bean sprouts are wonderful. But to have it as a main course, isnât that quite light?â
I said, and Ando-san turned her face downcast.
âI-Iâm sorry. I didnât mean to sound like I was judging you.â
âNo, Itâs fine.â
âIâm just worried about you, Ando-san. ⦠Sorry, Iâm being nosey.â
I scratched my cheeks.
âI donât think you are being nosey, I think you are very caring.â
âEh?â
âI think thatâs why Koshiba-san is so attached to you.â
âAttached to me? I feel sheâs just trying to get on my nerves.â
âI donât think so. I can tell.â
âY-yeah?â
I got embarrassed.
âHey, Ando-san. If you would likeâ¦.â
*****
I unlocked the front door.
âCome in, come in.â
âS-sorry to bother you.â
Ando-san, shrinking her small body even more, stepped inside the door.
âSorry for inviting you to a room where a man lives alone. Doesnât it stink?â
âNo, itâs alright. Itâs rather refreshing.â
âHaha, thank you.â
I smiled.
âWell, I guess Iâd better get ready for dinner.â
âA-are you sure you donât mind? If you want, I can give you some moneyâ¦â
âItâs fine. Iâm the one who invited you.â
âT-thank you.â
She bowed.
âYouâre welcomeâ¦is what I would like to say, but I think I might be in a bit of trouble.â
âWhatâs wrong?â
âI was worried about you, so I invited you over on the spur of the moment⦠but Iâve only ever cooked dishes for guys that are pretty simple, so I was wondering if I could make dishes that I could serve to a girlâ¦â
âUmm, Matsuo-san. May I look in your refrigerator?â
âHm? Sureâ
âNow, if youâll excuse meâ¦â
Ando-san hesitantly opened the fridge and looked inside.
âHmmmm, I see. â¦:â
Then, a few moments later.
âMatsuo-san, if you donât mind, Iâll cook dinner.â
âHuh?â
âUm, would that be a nuisance?â
âAbsolutely not, but Ando-san, can you cook?â
âOnly a little.â
âThen, Iâll take you up on it.â
âYes, Matsuo-san, please take it easy.â
âNo, Iâll help you.â
âIâll be fine.â
Ando-san smiled.
âAll right, then, please.â
âYes.â
I sat down at the living room table and turned on the TV. In the meantime, I heard a tapping sound coming from the kitchen. I knew just from that that this girl could cook properly.
Thanks to that, I was able to watch TV programs with a carefree mind.
So â¦
âHere you go.â
It really felt like it was done in no time.
Then, Ando-san brought the food. I looked at one of the dishes on the table and gawked.
âThis isnât ⦠fried rice, is it?â
âYes, itâs pilaf.â
She replied with a smile.
âIf you use soy sauce, itâs fried rice, but if you use consommé, itâs pilaf.â
âI see.â
âI also added curry powder so that Matsuo-san, a male, would feel satisfied with the food.â
âAh, yes, thatâs right. It has a little curry-like color in it.â
âYes, this is a curry pilaf. And a simple salad and soup to go with it.â
âA-amazingâ¦.If it were me, this pilaf would be more like a messy fried rice, and that one bowl would be the end of it.â
âItâs not that big of a deal.â
âNo, this looks delicious. Can I start eating some right away?â
âYes, please.â
âWell, Thanks for the food.â
I picked up the spoon, took a bite of the curry pilaf.
ââ¦Deliciousâ
The words spilled out of my mouth naturally.
âR-really?â
âYes, this is very delicious. I have no complaints about the seasoning, the way the ingredients are sauteed, or how the rice is ⦠crispy.â
âI-Iâm so happy.â
âAh, you know, rather than me, Ando-san, you should eat as well.â
âYes, Thanks for the food.â
Andou-san ate the curry pilaf she made.
âHow is it?â
While I was staring, Ando-san was chewing slowly.
However,
â⦠Eh?â
Suddenly, tears spilled from her eyes.
âAh, ⦠sorry.â
This triggered her to wipe her eyes, but she couldnât stop crying.
âItâs okay, you donât have to hold back.â
âWhat?â
âYou can cry as much as you want. Iâm going to go to the bathroom.â
âN-No, donâtâ¦I want you by my side.â
The moment she looked at me with teary eyes, I was startled.
For a while after that, I watched her eating curry pilaf with tears spilling down her face.
*****
âThank you for dinner today.â
Ando-san said, bowing politely.
âOh, no. Iâd rather thank you for the food. It was really very, very good.â
âT-Thank you.â
She smiled, though her eyes were still wet with tears.
âThen, See you later.â
âAndo-san, itâs late. Iâll take you home.â
âN-No, You donât have to.â
âNo, but Iâm worried about you.â
âNo, Iâm fine.â
Ando-san hurriedly refused, so I had no choice but to give in.
âThen, take care. If anything happens, donât hesitate to call me.â
âYes, thank you so much.â
âBe careful on your way home.â
âIâll be fine. I ate a delicious meal with you, Matsuo-san, so Iâm in high spirits.â
âHaha, I see.â
And then Andou-san smiled again and left.
ââ¦.But, well.â
It looked somewhat cleaner than before she came.
Itâs just the kitchen area where she did the cooking, though.
Sheâs very meticulous, like the way she arranges the dishes for washing and draining.
âShe has a lot of girl powerâ¦.housewife power,⦠or maybe she has a lot of wife power?â
I was thinking that a man who can take her as his wife in the future is a lucky man.
âGuess Iâll take a bath.â
I headed for the bathroom while humming a tune.
