Chapter Twelve: Daelyn - The Proof Within
Daelyn
Daelyn's pulse raced as the room began to spin. She gripped the examination table's edge, her knuckles bone-white, fighting the darkness that threatens to swallow her vision. Dr. Archibald watches, patient and steady, the only fixed point in her unraveling world.
Memories slice through her: Andrik's fingertips tracing her skin, his whispered promises, his betrayal that cut deeper than any blade. Each recollection steals another breath from her lungs.
"I don't understand how this is possible," she manages, her voice barely audible. "I've only just come of age for marriage arrangements." A bitter smile twists her lips. "I've spent my entire life following every rule they set. That one night..." She pauses, throat tight. "That one night was the only time I ever chose for myself. There's never been anyone else."
She tugs her cashmere cardigan closer, as if the soft fabric might somehow shield her from judgment. Her golden hair falls forward, veiling her face from his gaze.
When she finally looks up, she finds no contempt in Dr. Archibald's expression, only compassion, unexpected and disarming. He rests a steady hand on her shoulder. In that moment, she forgets he's her physician. He can't be much older than she is, yet his presence carries a gravity beyond his years.
"Listen," he says, voice low and measured. "I understand this feels impossible. And you're right. Under normal circumstances, conception without intervention would be." He leans forward, dark eyes intent. "But I know exactly how this happened. This child you're carrying could be the key to solving the fertility crisis our mission was attempting to address." He hesitates, weighing his next words. "I need to explain everything properly, but I think we should include your family. Pilar is waiting just outside. Would you like her with us?"
Daelyn's gaze drifts to the door, fear coiling in her stomach. Fear for herself, for the child whose existence she discovered mere minutes ago. Her fingers trace the ultrasound image, this tangible evidence of a miracle she never sought.
"Dr. Archibald," she whispers, "I don't know what to tell them." Her eyes meet his. "You weren't here earlier. My brother was livid when Andrik visited. His rage was terrifying."
"First, call me Nick. Pilar does, and circumstances will have us working closely together." The corner of his mouth lifts briefly. "And yes, she mentioned Andrik's appearance."
Daelyn nods, memory flashing to breakfast that morning. Lucas discussing her coming-out ceremony, her formal introduction to society as an eligible royal. Her stomach twists at the recollection.
"Just this morning," she says, pressing trembling fingers to her lips, "my brother was planning my debut celebration." Tears spill unchecked down her cheeks, her body shuddering with each breath. "How do I tell him about this? And when it becomes public..."
Questions crash through her mind like a violent tide: What will happen to the baby? Will she keep her child? What punishment lies ahead?
"Lucas might disown me if the shame doesn't destroy me first." Her voice fractures. "And Andrik is marrying another woman, so there's no hope for resolution. This is treason. Intimacy before marriage. And I'm carrying irrefutable proof."
Fear shadows her face as tremors cascade through her slender frame.
Nick shifts closer, meeting her gaze directly. He clasps his hands between his knees, near enough that she catches his scent. Clean cologne beneath antiseptic. When he speaks, quiet authority cuts through her spiraling thoughts.
"I stand outside your position, which gives me a clearer perspective," he says. "I've learned that when confronting something overwhelming, the right allies make an impossible burden manageable." His eyes hold hers, unflinching. "Difficult choices lie ahead, Daelyn. But you don't face them alone."
He rises, running fingers through his dark hair, giving her space to breathe.
His words settle into her bones, carrying truth she can't deny. This labyrinth of consequences and politics is too complex to navigate alone. She'll need to relive every painful moment, make impossible choices to protect herself and this child. Despite the anguish of disappointing her brother, she needs his protection. She needs allies.
Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
"Will you help me tell them?" she asks, surprising herself with the steadiness of her voice. "My brother and Pilar. I can't do this alone."
Nick turns from his notes, his white coat outlining broad shoulders. He studies her, leaning against the counter.
"Without question," he answers decisively. "You'll need me to explain the scientific aspects anyway. How natural conception became possible after all these years."
Something in his unwavering commitment calms the storm in her chest. Despite everything, his presence makes her feel less vulnerable.
With unsteady legs, Daelyn stands. She draws a deep breath, gathering courage to face what waits beyond the door. Nick moves beside her, his calm resolve strengthening her own.
At least Lucas won't execute me with a physician as witness, she thinks with grim humor.
As they walk toward the waiting area, a question tugs at her mind: What did Nick mean that her child could be the solution?
----------------------------------------
Pilar sits alone in the anteroom, rising the moment they appear. Concern etches fine lines around her eyes as she braces for their news.
Daelyn scans the empty chairs. "Where's Lucas?"
"Your brother was on his way, but received an urgent call from my father," Pilar explains. "Perhaps we should meet in his study? The privacy would be better."
Nick nods once. "That would be wise."
Pilar glances at Daelyn, seeking confirmation before leading them from the medical wing.
Each step of the five-minute walk feels heavier than the last. Daelyn's courage threatens to dissolve with every heartbeat.
Nick must sense her faltering resolve. He slows his stride to match hers and gives her arm a gentle squeeze. His professional composure steadied her when nothing else could.
They arrive at Lucas's study to find him finishing a call, tension evident in the rigid set of his shoulders.
"Yes, sir. I believe we can agree on that. Thank you. Good night." He places his headset on the desk and presses his fingers against the back of his neck, muscles tight with stress.
Guilt floods Daelyn. She's about to heap more burden onto him.
Pilar crosses to Lucas, wrapping her arms around him, whispering something that softens his expression.
"Come in," he says, gesturing toward the seating arrangement near the marble fireplace. One of the few places where her brother truly relaxes.
Daelyn shuts the door firmly, checking it's secure before joining them. No one can overhear what comes next.
Nick shakes Lucas's hand, the formal greeting of equals despite their different stations.
"So," Lucas says directly, "you've discovered what's been affecting my sister?"
"Yes, I believe we have." Nick's half-smile betrays the complexity of his answer.
All eyes turn to Daelyn. Her knees weaken. Pilar guides her to the sofa, sitting beside her, their hands clasped. Daelyn's gratitude for this simple support swells even as her courage falters.
Lucas's concern deepens. He motions for Nick to continue.
"Please, Dr. Archibald, enlighten us."
Nick touches his chin thoughtfully. "For this to make sense, I should start from the beginning."
Lucas settles on the opposite sofa, crossing his legs. "The floor is yours."
Nick nods, gathering his thoughts. His hands moving to illustrate his points, he begins, "Normally, embryos are conceived in our IVF program..."
Daelyn watches her brother's face as Nick speaks, knowing these scientific facts are merely the prelude to a revelation that will change everything
