Thalassa dawdled in the secretaryâs office, nerves fluttering in her chest like a trapped bird, unable to muster the courage to set off. Meanwhile, in the executive suite of the Sinclair Group, the atmosphere was as tense as a coiled spring.
Standing before the desk, David was focused; his gaze locked onto Lysander, who sat ensconced in his high-backed leather chair. Davidâs every nerve was taut, ready to spring into action at a momentâs notice.
The deep, intense eyes of Lysander flicked towards David and commanded, âInvestigate. I want every detail of Thalassaâs abduction. Every person involved- I want a thorough rundown.â
The air around Lysander was sharp with a cold that could make oneâs skin crawl.
What was Thalassa hiding last night? Who was she protecting with her silence? Did she think a few lies could pull the wool over his eyes?
Beneath Lysanderâs calm exterior was a molten fury, ready to erupt and scorch everything in its path.
âYes, sir. Iâll get on it right away,â David affirmed with a grave nod, quickly exiting the office.
The moment Lysander arrived at the office today, a storm seemed to follow him. His handsome face mirrored the intensity of the thunderclouds brooding outside.
During the morning meeting, the entire boardroom felt the chill of his displeasure, with every proposal met with a swift veto. Everyone tiptoed around him, scared even to breathe too loudly.
David, who had an uncanny ability to read the room, knew that Lysanderâs foul mood was undoubtedly due to Thalassa.
He stayed on high alert, determined not to make a single misstep and become collateral damage.
And, sure enough, Davidâs instincts were spot on. Lysander had just tasked him with uncovering the full story behind Thalassaâs abduction from the day before.
It always came back to Thalassa.
Ever since Thalassa entered Lysanderâs orbit, his moods swung with her presence. This marked a change from the Lysander of old, who remained untouched by the whims and affairs of others-the perennial man of ice, never quick to anger or smile.
The wheels of fate had started to turn the night Lysander found Thalassa in that old barn, and since then, his emotions had become vulnerable to her influence.
Taking the elevator down to the lobby, David was surprised to find the woman in question waiting by the elevator doors. He flashed a practiced smile and said, âMs. Everhart, what a coincidence. I was just thinking of you, and here you are. Itâs almost magical.â
Thalassa eyed Davidâs professional grin with immediate wariness. David, who had been by Lysanderâs side for years, was as cunning as they come.
His words were never idle; they were always laced with meaning.
Thalassa couldnât quite decipher his intentions, so she raised her guard to avoid tumbling into any verbal traps he might have set.
Thinking of poaching me back to be your assistant, David?â Thalassa retorted playfully.
After all, it was Lysander himself who had fired her from the Sinclair Group.
Surely, David didnât have the authority to rehire someone Lysander had personally dismissed.
With that, Thalassa secured her position-avoiding any conversational pitfalls and leaving David in a tricky spot.
David laughed, the sound smooth as silk. âMs. Everhart, youâre as sharp-tongued as ever. Iâve lost count of how many traps Iâve fallen into because of you. Iâd be grateful if you spared me the digging.
Why would I dare trip you up? Youâre here to see Mr. Sinclair, arenât you? Heâs in his office. You can go straight up.â
With a deft side-step, David avoided the question of whether he intended to lure Thalassa back as a secretary. Instead, he exposed Thalassaâs defenses, demonstrating he had no intention of putting her on the spot while gracefully dismounting from his own precarious position.
After speaking, he stepped out of the elevator, making way for Thalassa to take her place.
