Bruce hurriedly sifted through the pages, his fingers driven by a sense of urgency, searching for that one piece of information that could lead him to Evelyn. Finally, he found her file. However, as he skimmed through the details, a sinking feeling enveloped him- Evelyn hadnât listed her hometown. The trail went cold; Evelyn had vanished into thin air.
His expression darkened, a storm brewing behind his eyes.
âWhat are you sneaking around here for?â The study door creaked open, and a distinctly sharp female voice cut through the silence.
It was Lucy. Bruce immediately snapped the folder shut, lifting his gaze to meet hers. His menacing scowl melted away, replaced with a sly, honeyed grin, âHey, Lucy, back from your Zumba class?â
What are you hiding there? You look awfully guilty,â Lucy shot back, unimpressed. She marched over, reaching for the folder he was clutching.
Bruceâs heart skipped a beat, and he quickly lifted his hand out of her reach, a flash of annoyance crossing his face as he retorted, âIâm just reading a contract, thinking about getting back to the old grind. But you, with your suspicious mind, how can anyone live with that?â
âIf you have nothing to hide, why act so defensive?â Lucy snapped back.
With a glare, Bruce thrust the folder into her hands, âHere, take a look then! Go on, check it from top to bottom. And if thereâs nothing amiss, weâre getting a divorce! I canât stand this constant distrust!â
He stood with his hands on his hips, visibly seething as he turned away, leaving Lucy to her scrutiny.
The word âdivorceâ hit Lucy like a ton of bricks, her aggressive stance crumbling. The documents she had been so eager to snatch now felt like a hot potato. She dared not open them. If she did, Bruce would hold her to that threat of a divorce.
Over the years, theyâd had their share of threats to separate, but Lucy had always been the fierce one, standing her ground, refusing to let go. Her obsession with Bruce was deeper than that of any other woman. He had a way with words, a charm that held them captive, and Lucy was no exception.
Even though she knew about his indiscretions, the thought of losing her status as his wife and the thought of being dethroned were unbearable. A divorce would mean losing Bruce for good.
âAlright, alright, Bruce, I was just trying to rattle you. I wasnât really going to check. Donât be mad.â Lucy cajoled, nudging his elbow and handing back the folder without even flipping open its protective cover.
Bruce decided to let it go, snatching the documents and placing them on the shelf with a scowl, âAll these years, Iâve had more than enough of this. If it werenât for our daughter, Iâd divorce you in a heartbeat!â
He stormed out, leaving Lucy flustered and fearful that he was genuinely angry. She hurried after him, âBruce, please donât be mad. Youâll only hurt yourself. Iâll stop, I promise. Look at you, just out of the hospital with bruises still visible. We donât want you back in there. I told you I wanted to pick you up when you got discharged, and you wouldnât have it.â
Bruce shook off her hand from his arm, âWith you acting like a jailer all the time, youâll be the death of me!â
âDonât say that; I really do love you,â Lucy said, her voice a mix of desperation and tears, following him out. The document and its secrets, now overshadowed by the threat of divorce, were forgotten.
Meanwhile, Thalassa arrived at the spot Ethan had mentioned, a meeting arranged with a reporter. It was a quaint diner, a serene spot perfect for business or casual conversations.
She entered the private booth and saw a man and a woman seated at the table. The woman had the perfect oval face, her makeup bold and trendy, dressed in high-end fashion.
It was Charlotte!
âLook whoâs here again, Thalassa, Charlotte said, her voice laced with a mocking tone as she shot a scrutinizing glance at Thalassa, a smirk playing on her lips.
