âGosh, that jerk is terrifying!â Behind Evelyn, little Elowen suddenly burst into tears.
Her tiny hand, tightly clutching Evelynâs finger, trembled with fear.
Evelyn felt a pang in her heart. She shot Bruce a furious glare. âIâm telling the truth, Bruce. You need to stop bothering us. daughter and I have nothing to do with you anymore!â
Bruce, already infuriated, took a menacing step towards Evelyn at her words, his posture threatening.
My Thalassa, visibly shaken, quickly stepped forward, blocking Bruceâs path. With a stern expression, she said, âI saw your daughter, Susan, at the dinner party last night. She was thrown out by Lysander. My children are Lysanderâs children!â
Her words were few but firm.
Bruce paused, his sinister gaze shifting to Thalassa. âAnd what about you? Are you my daughter?â
Bruce could tell that Thalassa was using Lysander as a threat. Lysander had allowed Thalassa to attend the dinner party but had thrown out Susan, Bruceâs daughter. This was a clear indication that Lysander respected Thalassa but would not extend the same courtesy to anyone associated with her.
If he scared her children, Lysander would not let him off easily.
Bruceâs question to Thalassa held a double meaning.
Firstly, he wanted to confirm whether Evelyn had betrayed him.
Secondly, he wanted to use Thalassa to gain favor with Lysander.
Thalassa met Bruceâs cold, threatening gaze, as though he would strangle her on the spot if she answered negatively.
Thalassa gritted her teeth and said, âI wish I werenât your daughter! I dream of it!â
Evelynâs eyes widened in disbelief as she gazed at Thalassa. She hadnât expected Thalassa to say that.
Why didnât she deny being Bruceâs daughter?
Bruceâs grim expression suddenly relaxed into a smile. His demeanor changing as though he was wearing a mask.
âThalassa, I was only trying to scare you. I wasnât really going to hurt you. Donât take it to heart. I mean, Evelyn loves me so much, how could she possibly betray me, right, Evelyn?â
Bruce laughed, his eyes twinkling with an unmistakable malice.
Evelyn shivered at his gaze, instinctively shielding Elowen closer to her, avoiding his gaze.
Her avoidance, in Bruceâs eyes, was an affirmation.
He touched his nose, lowered his head, and glanced at the children hiding behind the adults. âDonât be afraid, Iâm your grandfather.
I initially came to discuss something with your grandmother, but it seems she isnât welcoming me.
Perhaps Iâll come another time. You all continue playing and donât be scared.â
As he spoke, he reached out to pat the childrenâs heads.
Evelyn quickly pulled the children away from his reach, glaring at him, âBruce, I donât want to see you.
Leave! Havenât you ruined my life enough?â
Evelyn growled, her body trembling.
Bruce had ruined her life, and now he was trampling on her dignity to satisfy his ego, all the while claiming that she loved him so much and would never betray him.
Every mention of the word âloveâ left Evelyn feeling disgusted, tarnishing her heart.
How could she have been so foolish to fall for such a man, spending most of her life pining for him?
Even in her old age, she was almost fooled by his sweet words into thinking he truly wanted to give her and Thalassa a home.
The more Evelyn thought about her past stupidity, the more she hated herself, and Bruce, the scum that he was.
âDonât get agitated, Evelyn. If you donât want to see me, Iâll leave. But remember, donât speak ill of me. I donât like hearing about you betraying me.â
With that, Bruce shot Evelyn a cold, threatening glance, retracted his extended hand, and walked away.
