âWhere do you live?â Alaric asked.
The place he had always assumed Hertha to live in was actually Thalassaâs home, and he had always thought the four kids of Lysander and Thalassa to be hers.
So, he had no idea at all where Hertha actually lived.
âWhat are you doing now? Dropping me home? I donât need it!â Hertha huffed, puffing her cheeks out in irritation. âTake me to the bar. I havenât had my fill yet!â
Alaricâs face darkened; he said in a stern voice, âHertha, are you trying to ruin yourself? That guyâs as old as the hills and you know heâs only drinking with you to get you drunk. You know what happens after that and I donât need to spell it out!â
âDo you think I want to drink with him? Itâs for work!â Hertha sat up straight; her eyes were flashing with anger.
Her large, round eyes were filled with a mixture of hurt and rage.
âYou can find another job, but if you lose yourself, you canât find that again,â Alaric said; his usual laid-
back demeanor was replaced by a serious expression.
At his words, something tightened in Herthaâs chest, and her hands clenched on the cushion behind her. Tears welled in her eyes as she snapped, âWhy do you care if I lose myself? Youâre not my family and I donât need you to look after me! I wonât go home, so take me to the bar!â
She was puffing and being stubborn.
âHertha, donât be so headstrong,â Alaric warned, his face stern.
âI will be so headstrong! If you wonât take me, Iâll get a cab myself! Iâm upset now and why canât I even have a drink? What are you, my dad or mom? Why are you trying to control everything?â Herthaâs voice was quick with emotion, which was a clear sign of her distress.
âEnough of this. Just give me your address,â Alaric said, not wanting to be led by her.
âYouâre not going? Fine, Iâll jump out!â Herthaâs eyes filled with tears as she made an impulse move to open the car door.
Seeing her actions in the rear-view mirror, Alaric barked, âHertha, sit down and behave!â
But Hertha continued, her knuckles white and her face desperate as she pounded on the locked door.
âQuiet down, Iâll take you to a bar!â Alaric finally gave in to her demands.
Hearing his words, Hertha finally stopped; her chest was still heaving.
He couldnât tell whether she was being sulk with him or herself.
Soon, Alaric pulled up to the front of a local bar.
Hertha got out of the car without a word and started walking towards the barâs entrance.
Alaric stayed in the driverâs seat; his hands were gripping the steering wheel tightly. He was furious and ready to drive off.
She was right, he wasnât her family, so why should he care?
As he drove away, he glanced in the rear-view mirror and saw Herthaâs swaying figure entering the bar.
He slammed on the brakes and the car came to a sudden stop. He swore under his breath and reversed the car, parking it and getting out.
âHertha, I must owe you from a past life!â he muttered to himself as he entered the bar.
His eyes scanned the crowd and found Herthaâs slirn figure at the bar, nursing a glass of yellowish whiskey.
A predatory man approached her and, with a sinister grin, struck up a conversation.
When Hertha wasnât looking, he dropped a pill into her drink.
âHey, beautiful, letâs have a drink together,â the man said as he raised his glass to her.
Hertha gave a naive smile and lifted her own glass, clinking it against his, âSure, letâs have a drink.â
And with that, she lifted the glass to her lips.
