When she asked the first time, it was with resentment. She hoped, with all her heart, that Bruce was not her father.
This time, she asked with determination. She was seeking the truth.
Facing Thalassaâs serious gaze, Evelyn flickered her eyes and looked away.
âWhy are you asking this again?â Evelyn was clearly trying to evade the question.
âAt the hospital, Bruce lost a lot of blood and needed a transfusion. I offered mine, but the nurse said it couldnât be done after hearing my blood type was B.â Thalassa explained.
âWhatâs Bruceâs blood type?â Evelynâs eyes, still filled with shock, were now layered with anxiety.
âHeâs type-0. Mom, youâre type-0 too, so why am I type B?â Thalassa stared at Evelyn, scrutinizing her every facial twitch.
Back when they lived in the countryside, the whole family had a medical check-up, so Thalassa learned everyoneâs blood type. She clearly remembered Evelyn was type-0.
Evelyn looked pale, and her gaze became even more evasive. âYou must have got it wrong. I should be type-B.â
Thalassa grabbed her shoulders, turning her around to face her. âMom, what are you hiding? Am I not Bruceâs daughter? Then whose daughter am I?â
âNo, you are his daughter.â Evelyn was insistent.
âReally? I had the doctor keep his blood sample. I can go to the hospital right now for a paternity test.â
Evelyn immediately panicked and gripped Thalassaâs hand tightly. âDonât go! Donât do the paternity test!â
âThen tell me whatâs going on!â Thalassa sternly demanded.
Evelynâs eyes welled up with tears. Her mind traveled back to over two decades ago.
âWhen I found out Bruce had betrayed me, I was heartbroken and went to a bar to drink my sorrows away. In a fit of revenge, I ended up sleeping with a stranger, and then you came along.â
This was a secret Evelyn had intended to take to her grave. She didnât want Thalassa to know that she was the result of a moment of recklessness. She didnât want Thalassa to think that she was a child born out of nothing but revenge.
Moreover, she didnât want Bruce to know. Deep down, she had never really gotten over Bruce, and she feared that he would hate her if he found out that.
At least this way, it was Bruce who had wronged her, so he would feel guilty about leaving her.
But she had underestimated the extent of Bruceâs ruthlessness.
Thalassa was left speechless by Evelynâs confession.
Her heart surged with a mix of emotions. She felt both astonishment and relief.
She was not Bruceâs daughter after all.
Her breaths became shallow and rapid as her eyes filled with tears.
Thalassa, whatâs wrong?â After seeing her daughterâs stunned expression and tear-filled eyes, Evelyn, thinking the news had deeply upset Thalassa, asked with concern.
Thalassa snapped back to reality, feeling a surge of excitement she had never felt before. âMom, you should get some rest. I need to go out for a bit.â
Before Evelyn could respond, Thalassa rose to her feet. She moved quickly, even though she was trembling slightly as she moved.
She was not Bruceâs daughter.
Lysander no longer had a reason to hate her and lash out at her.
There was no longer a reason for her to be trapped by him.
She needed to tell him the truth right now.
She owed him nothing.
